Awesomeness! Giraffes are so funny, they always look like they have a smug sarcastic smile. Beautiful work, I really like the blue light in the highlights.
An amazing painting I was wondering if this technique works with every painting like I mean can I paint black and white first as a base layer let it dry then glaze colors on top of the previous layer in every painting?:)
If you were painting this giraffe with just oils on a white canvas, do you still recommend just drawing it out and painting around it? Since you are using white paint for your bottom later, wouldn't it be quite hard to see until you paint over it?
Thank you Lachri. This is very helpful and I'm going to paint my first oil over acrylic using your same materials. I love learning about glazing over the black and white underpainting. I'd like to try that on portraits. Joyce Hanson Anderson Art.
Hi Lisa, Loving your videos! Very helpful. I want to start out oil painting and I feel quite intimidated, and I see from your technique of painting in black/white first is very interesting and useful. However i realize when I overlay a low opacity color over a black/white image in photoshop... there is that artificial feel to it, as if anyone looking at it will immediately know that the original image was black and white. How did you manage to avoid that artificial look and made it look as if the painting was painted in color from the start? Thank you so much for your reply!
Hi Lisa, love your videos. Do you, or can you varnish an oil over acrylic? I know there are different kinds of varnish for acrylics and oil. What to do? Thanks a lot
+Lachri Fine Art Ok Lisa, Thank you so much for you quick answer to my Q. I'll say it again your work is wonderful and very inspirational... Thank you again Marlyne.
Hello, i draw for almost 3 years now, and i would likek to try painting. There are a lot of sort of paint and i would like you to tell me which one i should start by ? Acrylic ?
+Nicolas. D I can't tell you which would be best for you. I like them both :) I do have a supply list on my website www.lachri.com of the ones I like :) lachri.com/classes/art-supplies/
This one is oil over acrylics, so the oils are glossy. For my acrylic paintings, they look just as glossy because I use a high gloss varnish when I'm done with them :)
Oh ok, thanks. Guess I didn't realize you painted the background in oils as well. Thought it was just glazing the color over the giraffe. Makes sense that it is glossy then.
This giraffe looks as if his head is poking out from inside your easel. So realistic looking!! :) I'm really enjoying these older videos where you explain exactly what you're doing to achieve certain looks...umm, in a voice that doesn't sound like it was put on fast-forward...x3. Lol! Well, I'm old and my ears don't follow along as fast as it once did... (just teasing ya a little) :D
+Lachri Fine Art Thank uou . I have been trying to do a painting in colour of my parents wedding photo that is Black & White & gave up maybe i might give it another try & do it in Black & white first !!! Wish me luck ... lol. I really like your tutorials so clear , you are amazing .
I tried the link, is it just me, probably, but couldn't get to the line drawing of the giraffe. When I click on the link I get the more info dropdown. Thanks! Beautiful work per usual Lisa!
HELP .... Question: I want to right away be able to do fast oil portraits, painting a monotone acrylic in great detail and then glazing with Windsor Newton oil paint mixed with Liquin. You say that you use a lot of liquin to thin your oil paints. Some say that since Liquin is oily, that one must start with less Liquin on the first layers because of the fat over lean principle. Others say that that one cannot use more than 1/3 Liquin with oil paint to keep the binder. I want my layers to be fairly thin but I'll be doing several layers of glazes in oil c Liquin. ..... So #1 ... can I actually use as much liquin as I want in each layer and still have a painting that will adhere to the acrylic underpainting and the paint won't crack in future years? #2 ... Is it important as some say to have great air ventilation when working with Liquin? I paint in an average sized bedroom with heat or air conditioning, so do I need open windows with the heat or air conditioning turned off? HELP. I've just bought all my supplies and I'm anxious to get started. Also, I use Liquitex acrylics. Will that brand work for my underpainting? It's all I have at the moment. .... joyce
+0DevelishAngel0 It's not something that even needs to be considered because the acrylics are 100% dry (and fully dried, not cured as oil does) before you start working in oils :)
I love this tutorial! And great job with your studio it looks great! :) I'm in the middle of moving as well. And I can't wait to get back to painting! :( :P
Oils dry slow? Wow, so that gives time to play around with the colour? Thought I dried slow. How do I clean my brushes from oil and how to I "water it down a little" i know technically you can't add water to oil. Please help
kylee, I also Dont use paint thinner and I use the method burnishing. Just get another color similar to it and try to blend it in ur try a white prismacolor. I mostly use the white. If you need more information, lachri has a blending video in which she explained all the different ways to blend. Hope that helps!
+Patricio R Thanks :) Those are two mediums I don't mix. I use colored pencil with airbrushing but not with acrylic. I use them on completely different surfaces so they aren't an ideal mixed media choice for how I work :)
using a lot of water into your acrylic underpainting doesnt underbind your painting? ive heard horror stories about it. so i have just been avoiding this method. id love to hear how your paintings have been doing.
I don't mean to question you, because you are definitely a lot more experienced than me, but I thought it wasn't okay to mix acrylic with water? Again no disrespect, I'm just trying to learn.
You mean " you let it dry over- day" cuz we all know you stay up all night painting. ( lol cuz you said you let it dry over night) I've been scared to even try to paint animals. I think I'll just jump in and do it and forget the fear . I haven't painted in about a year due to fear of messing up, and having no idea what I want to paint.
as you know I am not a painter. but I never miss one of your videos. I find your videos so relaxing. I wish I could paint.
+Laura Mcclure Thanks! I bet you could paint anything you wanted to if you tried :)
This is absolutely gorgeous! We need a fluffy giraffe! There has to be such a species.

+Marlyne Bilton I got that one at Hobby Lobby :)
+Lachri Fine Art Ok Lisa, Thank you so much for you quick answer to my Q. I'll say it again your work is wonderful and very inspirational... Thank you again Marlyne.
Hi here, how did you maintain fat over lean rule in oil layers? I see you add white on top of glazed layer, which seems lean over fat?

You're awesome. I love your videos.
I'm wondering how your black background is so glossy if you just painted it with Basics acrylic paint?

+MegaChrissie61 Yes, you can do this all in acrylics :)
+Lachri Fine Art Thank uou . I have been trying to do a painting in colour of my parents wedding photo that is Black & White & gave up maybe i might give it another try & do it in Black & white first !!! Wish me luck ... lol. I really like your tutorials so clear , you are amazing .

How does the fat over lean rule work with oil in combination with acrylic?
+0DevelishAngel0 It's not something that even needs to be considered because the acrylics are 100% dry (and fully dried, not cured as oil does) before you start working in oils :)
I love this tutorial! And great job with your studio it looks great! :) I'm in the middle of moving as well. And I can't wait to get back to painting! :( :P
