Anthony Rapp said being on this show is like being on the "bonus round of life" for him....it's like the bonus round of life for me, too, as an older fan who has loved Star Trek for 50 years🤩
What a difference a year makes. STD is mega crap and Picard is garbage. Too bad I just wanted Star Trek. But at least we have the Orville.
What a difference a year makes. The core fans really hate STD ratings are in the toilet. Season 3 will out soon it probably will receive a lot negative press. I feel bad for these actor's because they will be cause of Star Trek demise.
I really love the new Star Trek. It’s different but still Star Trek. The Actors are AWSOME. I love Anson Mount! He’s so hot.
mickor
How stupid. Maybe you need to walk this back, considering that he'll be return as Pike in his own series.
Stupid-ass fuck. 😂😂😂😂
WTF you watching, because "THIS AINT TREK!".
I so agree with you
I was a bit unsure about ST Discovery, at first. I gave it a chance & now? I LOVE IT! Partly because I love the character of Michael Burnham. Her characters personality is almost a clone of my daughter! Even the characters I like less, still have an important part to play in the story.
@@buggerlugz6753 We're watching Star Trek, and yes it is. I've been watching Star Trek since the late 80s starting with TOS reruns. It's absolutely Star Trek. The series is an updated style of Trek, but still Trek
For me ... Discovery is the best Star Trek so far. Love the Film like quality of every episode. The characters are wonderful and have grown in maturity over the 3 seasons. Thank you to everyone involved.
Great work and Great interviewing! Thank you Anthony, Mary, Anson and Lady Martin-Green.
this is a GREAT interview with a fantastic panel 👏. good interviewing guys 👍👍💯 you can see how much better it is when the interviewer is also a fan of the show
While the actors do comment on the casts diversity and inclusion in this series one thing detractors (who may not actually have been watching the series..) don't seem to get is it's not a focal point of the series. They don't focus in on the fact there are more women, they don't talk about the same sex relationship.. it's just a relationship.. or people of color (any color..) it's just part of it all like it's pretty common and not meant to make a big deal of which is in keeping with what Star Trek was (I think..) supposed to be like in the 23rd century. It's a very good series with a excellent cast. CBS still needs a good lashing for making it part of their all paid access thingie but whatever.. they can do more with the series than they could have on say Network TV which is kind of cool.
Spoken like a person who is privileged
Season 2 has been freaking amazing!
I liked the first season too but the second is just amazing. Feels like suddenly the newcommer Pike became the center of the show
Agreed.... I can't wait until they see the borg.... I think its brave of them to even attempt to fix the shattered timeline.... For me Tilly is the standout character.... I want to adopt her as my sister or something.
Blueboystew Bluetillidie Agree about Tilly, she’s the more bubbly female version of Reg Barclay.. In fact, I’d dare say she’s the only truly likeable character in the show.. I hope they make a separate Pike show, that ending scene in the last episode with a clean cut Spock looked promising..
I have to say, I have never really been a Star Trek fan. It has just not been my thing personally. But I saw that Anson Mount was in it and thought I guess I will give it a try. And I have to say I like this version or series of Star Trek. It really took me by surprise!
Hurrah for Anson Mount's use (and perhaps coining) of the word Vulcanity! 😊
I loved the first show of season two - it's just getting better and better!
IMO it’s the best Star Trek show ever! I love it like I love the ST movies. It’s amazing and seems to get better and better.
Sonequa played the hell out of the Michael role, really refreshing lead!
Yes she did!!!
The writers on disco are useless
I like the show. It's different, but also good.
I love it! My favorite show of the moment and definitely one of my favorite shows of all time. Movie quality in terms of story, acting and visuals.
@mickor Yeah. I watched season one last year and it was so meh, I cant even remember what it was about. Which is funny as I remember all other real Star Trek quite well, and thats going back a few decades.
Telling how Anthony almost refers to season 1 as “act 1” 😄
I don't get the hate. If you don't like it, don't watch it. I for one am happy for every single science fiction show we get, because there aren't many...
Absolutely agree! I hate how people are trotting out 'The Orville' in order to trash 'Discovery'. I happen to enjoy both...give me more adventures in space :-)
Imagine if you love a series and a new writing team came in and changed it into something completely different. You'd be mad too.
I have been a fan since the 70s. I honestly do not see any of the "SJW" crap they talk about. Hard to respect an opinion when it just comes across as trolling. I quite enjoyed the 1st season, and the 2nd is looking better. Do I like the new Klingon design? No, but it is not a show killer (they have had numerous looks over the years). Do I like Anthony/Stamets? No. Not as an actor, not as a character. I do hope the spores eat him... but overall it is a very good show. The 1st season was way better than TNGs 1st season. That was horrid, but the series turned out very good after that.
@@Paulafan5 "Imagine if you were sooooo entitled that the fact that a new series in the franchise was not the way you wanted you proceed to work yourself into a froth in the hope that you can make it all go away"
@MonkeyZorr What a laughable "fan" you are of ST.
You don't want to hear any detractors of STD being criticised but you also feel that your own name calling is a valid contribution.
Save your toxic "fandom".
Goodness me. Anson's easy on the eyes, isn't he? ~^_^~
I looove how he looks on the show, but here he looks like he got mugged or something. Do they not have a comb on set?
:/ Is this why you people watch Star Trek?
@@flasher6597 - The bar is low for discovery.
He's a silver fox!
I binge watched the first season and I liked it. I was old enough to watch the original series and I appreciate it [the original] for being episodic. Discovery seems to play out like a book that has a start and a finish, not a collection of short stories. The look and feel make me suspend enough belief that I'm not rigidly grasping for canon and I appreciate the show as an enjoyable standalone. Looking forward to binge watching season 2.
@MonkeyZorr It's not that critical. Seriously. It's not. Past series are still available for nostalgia.
What a fantastic interview, great questions and exceptional answers. Love the relationship dynamic between the cast, excited for season 2. The premier in my opinion was the best episode of the Discovery franchise...
Anson Mount stole the show
Christopher pike is the man!!!!
I am just seeing this now. I really appreciate this interview.
Tilly is so sweet. I actually have a little crush on her.
Mount-Pike one of the best captain of the series.
lol, excellent!
Pike, "Is that a smile I see on your face"
Spock, "Yes"
I bet that relates to The Cage, where Spock showed emotion.
EDIT: I may have misinterpreted that. It was just a small clip. Need to see more of Spock in order to make a proper judgement.
The daddy hotness overwhelms me
You mean...Anson.Mpunt? Ohhh yessss
I think they all did a great job, keeping the star trek dream alive! And that is the most important thing in itself.
Great talk. I already watched the second season's opening episode three times. This show is wonderful!
Thanks Build for a great interview - great panel and everyone was gracious and generous and interesting.
People seem to forget the first season of all Star treks are usually crap TNG and voyager are examples. Discovery so far has been better and it's only just starting season 2.
@John Smith so why the fuck did you bother watching this video.
They were rocky, but it was still Star Trek at its core. Discovery is still not "star trek" enough for me, and a lot of other fans. It is slightly improved this season, except for the mess that is fake-Spock. It would be nice for Pike to know something and Burnham not to. She knows everything. Not even Data knew everything. He had to look things up on the Federation computer.
The first season of Discovery was so much better than the first season of TNG - and that turned out to be a great series. Been a fan since the 70s and I am really enjoying the series.
I just wish they didn't have the fantastic escapes in the last 10 minutes. I mean, their tech seems better than TNG tech.
@@TitoTimTravels ru serious?
I just love the character of Sylvia Tilley! I could easily be her. Her character reminds me of when I was new to the military. Fresh out of BMTS & T Schools. A little scared, a little unsure, trying to find the way. Mary Wiseman does a GREAT JOB!!!!
For some reason I am shipping Pike and Burnham. Only mildly. I’m still all for Ash and Burnham.
Pretty good interview/panel/video. Thank you
25:18 It is possible to have skilled characters, but they also have to have weaknesses otherwise there is no story. True character strength isn't being more skilled and powerful than everyone else, it's facing weakness and growing because of it.
So, whenever Marvel gets to the X-Men........... Sonequa for Storm, no?
As soon as I read that I instantly realized how perfect that would be. Yes!
I'm re-watching TOS and DS9 and of course enjoying real Star Trek with 'Continues'
Season One set such a low benchmark that anything not a complete disaster will be an improvement. If the trailers are any reflection then look for The Orville to be an influence.
I guess if they want the show to keep sucking then yeah the Orville angle might be one to go with
@@BD12 Well imitation *is* the sincerest form of flattery. Not sure the Orville is going to go for the lens flares, dutch angles, plagiarism and non acting.
@@carlmanvers5009 I don't think, at least not yet, that either show compares favourably.
John Lenin Sounds like you're triggered because most Trek fans don't want your libtard feminism. Go watch a Gillette version of a Tampon commercial.

Seriously... Did you copy/paste your insults? I miss the days when randos on the internet had some intellect and craft. Such a poor effort. Try again.
I really like this show! Cant wait for season 2!
@MonkeyZorr your life is garbage
The host was great! :)
Lord in Heaven, WHY do they criticise this show so much , have they SEEN the mega shit that is out there that is being given second and third and fourth seasons !!!! Any Trek series is wonderful ,,
It's a very good show. why so many haters of it.
Why do all the haters watch videos like this one. Because secretly they like Star Trek Discovery.
out of morbid fascination and with hope that STD crap will be cancelled.
Great new discovery! It a great beginning! Enjoy fans!
The only thing they'll remember about this show in 50 years is how bad the writing is. It's really kind of sad because they have a great cast of actors in it.
Captain Pike's handle for mine has to either be "Captain Daddy" or "Damiral"
Explosions, that's what everybody wants. Not boring science and exploration stuff like those successful Star Trek shows of the past.
Dieter Mill You mean TNG (AKA DoucheTrek)?
A disgusting libtard version of Star Trek.
@@john-lenin grow up ....ur a child....
John Lenin your just mad bc the ratings suck and it will be considered worse then enterprise.
This and expanse are my scifi top two right now.
FIRE. KURTZMAN. There. Saved you a lot of effort analyzing why this doesn't work.
Except that "it doesn't work" is your opinion, not some sort of empirical fact.
Plenty of folk enjoy the series.
@MonkeyZorr again not true.. I've been watching Star Trek since the 70s.. and while I may not be a dedicated fanboy I've certainly seen every episode related to the universe and I consider it a great addition. It's got good acting from a great cast and better than good visuals with a great storyline so far. Nothing is really out of place... seems more of a dark ops side of a untold story though.. we shall see how that develops as time goes by.
I would never blame the actors in this show, they have to tow the company line to keep their jobs but CBS is to blame taking another beloved show, tossing it into the money making meat grinder and crank out a mystery meat hotdog on the other side.
Beautiful shirt.
I liked deep space 9
me too
You mean As The Space Station Turns? Too soap opera-ee for my taste at times.
Ds9 discovered a worm hole and explored the gamma quadrant...real trekkers would know that and they we're stationary....
Nobody will take you away.:-)
And Disco seems more like DS9 than any other Trek.
I REALLY like Star Trek Discovery, but they REALLY need to lessen the focus on Burnham. Make it a show about all the main crew members, not seemingly just one person.
I think it would lose some of it's well deserved hate if Burnham wasn't the only lead in the show. It's all her all the time and she knows EVERYTHING. Even Data had to look things up on the computer once in a while.
Michael Burnham is just like, Pike, Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway and Archer. Of course Discovery is going to focus on Michael Burnham! Exactly like the other shows focusing on their Captains.
@@savagestarlight7311 Then you haven't paid attention to many of those shows. It's definitely true as far as the original series is concerned (we did get a healthy helping of Spock and McCoy though), but hardly so for the others.
I have watched every single episode of every single Star Trek show ever. Captains always get the most screentime (except on Lower Decks) Captain Archer is the hero of Enterprise. Janeway is the main character of Voyager, Sisko on DS9 and Picard on TNG. Michael Burnham is the Captain of Discovery. Which is why she's the centerpiece of the whole show. Sure other characters get the focus every now and again, but the Captain always gets the most. Michael Burnham has been the Captain of Discovery even when she wasn't. In the beginning the whole show was about getting her in that chair. It began with the redemption arc. Saying you want Discovery with less Michael Burnham, is like saying your going to watch TNG except you'll fast-forward through all of the scenes with Picard. It wouldn't make any sense and there'd be no point.
Give this series a chance to grow!
Yeah, like fungus
Or a malignant cancer.
This show is dead as a door nail. The production runs over budget, the writing is crap, the actors are mediocre and no one watches it. Also, its been a failure on Netflix worldwide. This should be the last season ordered, and thank goodness.
Paul Harvey Said the InCel still jerking off to DoucheTrek reruns,
John Lenin I like the Orville, I'm glad I have a show to enjoy. I'm glad you like Discovery, having a show to enjoy is nice.
Star Trek Discovery Series is to give you a new and different to make it new all over again for the fans of today to have their own star trek to start with to get something that is new and not a repeat and go more into the future then before ever did
I miss after trek :(
Me too. I liked After Trek - even with the annoying host ha ha.
Ffs.... I'm getting tired of all the negativity.... We were all crying out for a new star trek series.... And as usual we aren't happy.... Who cares.... If it bothers you that much watch something else.... Try looking for positives.... I promise you all.... There are many.... And you need not look that hard
I think people are angry because they were told this was Star Trek and clearly it isn't. I have been following Star Trek since November 1966. So I know the difference. Now we could go on and on bottom line it isn't any good. I know a perfect for STD the CW there intelligence is not important. There shows don't need common sense or logic they just need emotions
Is Anthony Rapp the first actor to drop the "F Bomb" on a Star Trek series or movie??
@MonkeyZorr Except, it's true: ew.com/tv/2017/10/16/star-trek-discovery-fuck/
I think it was Tilly
Crew distrusts Pike because Lorca.
No one distrusts Burnham who's responsible for the near destruction of the Federation and millions of lives destroyed.
Sonequa Martin-Green thanks the writers for their great job and isn't being ironic.
*Sigh*
Except Burnham was right. Went about it wrong, but had Georgiou not stopped her in The Vulcan Hello the war might have been avoided. Georgiou played right into the Klingorc's claws.
T’Kuvma was determined to start a war with the Federation to unite the Klingon houses. It was not Burnham that started it.
@@reyleon3877 yep, he knew how they'd respond and what they'd say and he used that to his advantage. If Georgiou and Admiral Dimwit had just listened they could've cut the legs out from under him right in front of his initial followers.
Also they know Michael, they did distrust her to begin with but she’s smart and makes smart decisions. And regained their trust. Discovery was recently scorned by a captain they were devoted to, its natural to be wary of the next person.
Last season she WAS distrusted by the crew. She earned their trust and respect.
I love every second of the show it’s so awesome and hoping for Lorca to come back.
Disco is the best trek ever
Can't wait for Pike and for season 2!

Listen now..I love my Star Trek and almost quit after season 1, It was stupid. I am a tough guy and seriously a Dennis Leary Asshole. But Anson Mount is a really good looking guy. :P Sheeesh! I loved it!!!! GO CAPT PIKE SERIES!!!!!
I want to hear someone break into something from Hamilton.
I looked up a video on cats purring. It had four million views. Discovery videos like this one with four cast members and a trailer and everything, under five thousand views. Nuff said.
Great interview!
Amazing show... awesome
Yay, Led Zeppelin!!!
ANSON MOUNT RULES!
Anson found it weird being asked to play a captain yet he just played a king in Inhumans. 😂
Leah B --- Leah, totally two different franchises. Black bolt has no history in TV series whereas Startrek does. Fifty years they said in this video. So Anson was a little nervous playing this very old Character from when Jeffrey Hunter took the first role many years ago.
Star Trek is about Exploration, understanding the science of being human, challenging the moral compass, getting us to stand up for a better tomorrow, visualizing what a world of logic, and hate, and science, and religion would look like, also realizing how a future evolution of our species would push us in the direction of greatness. Star Trek has created scientists, men, and women of science, people who have whole hardheartedly dedicated their lives in bettering human species, and for the most part, succeeded. STD goes against everything Star Trek stands for. STD is a drama, opera, and an action series. It is an evolution of Star Trek universe, yes for the most part, but going against the tide of the original and subsequent series that made the show what its die-hard fans know and love. STD, and following shows in the Star Trek universe, please don't make this about money. Our world is going bananas, and the last thing we need is a show that encourages it.
Anson, "Weird coming into a show as a regular (an established show)"
well, it looks like the Trek fans are looking to you to save the show
note: I am BSG fan. Cylons rule!
Pike is so yummy 😈
Um, how about they end discovery early. Then give Aston Mount (Currently Captain Pike) his own series as a different character leading a new star trek crew after Voyager times. Just ignore his obvious similar looks to Pike. Maybe play Pikes great great great great great grandson. Any thoughts?
Mary is cute as always. Dressed nice too.
Wow Michael is kewl in real life. Why did they crucify her as a personality in the show? They made her personality look really bad. Not talking about her storyline. Just the character itself.
Measured reasonable and thoughtful response about Discovery? Oh MY! Delighted to see such discourse on the subject. I just posted a video stating very much the same opinion as yours. I'd appreciate it if you gave it a look and let me know what you think. :)
Chaosnaut InCels don’t want thoughtfulness. They want to keep jerking off to the same DouchTrek reruns they’ve been watching for the last 30 years.

Next time don't tease us and just make Spock gay. You can make him woke after Pon Farr becomes Jamie Farr.
No. Very very VERY no. Rewatch the original series, you're missing backstory.
Already gave them 2 chances/seasons... but this is not Star Trek. For me The Orville is a better Star Trek than Discovery. Not in the official name... but in the spirit and philosophy of Star Trek.
The second season has all been broadcast?
i HEAR over and over this aint my trek. good im glad, its good that a new vision, new ideas new everything. same ol same ol is BORING. haters go back 2 ur caves geez.
I like it !
Far from perfect, but still good.
At least its not the same old thing....
Oh, folks.
In 1972 Star Trek was shown on German television for the first time. At that time it was still called "Raumschiff Enterprise". And I've been infected ever since. I liked all these series. Some more, others less.
Discovery is a well done SF series. A series where you had the chance to spend money.
But it's not a Star Trek. Really not.
The actress playing Michael has the worse cry is that all she ever does?
Thankfully, it's not as if the show isn't very good and they are trying really hard to hype it.
wow, you mean like fandom's reaction to every single star trek series ever made?
@TIG5574 Indeed. TNG wasn't consistently good until about season 3 (IMO), these days it would likely be cancelled before it got there.
The difference is that TNG a.k.a. DoucheTrek was a total failure of Roddenberry’s vision and they rework it into a generic SciFi series. Discovery is Star Trek for adults not for pathetic basement dwelling InCels.
@TIG5574 Actually, I was a college sophomore when STNG came out, and my roommates and I loved every episode. People thought Tasha Yar was a bit stiff, and Wesley was a bit of a sissy, but 90 percent of our comments were positive. Q (John DeLancie) was positively brilliant, and it was he who basically opened the series. I'm guessing it was YOU (not I) who wasn't around when STNG premiered. Dr. Crusher was a competent-acting woman (unlike Tilly, who seems to be playing hookey from kindergarten.) Actually, everyone was credible as Star Fleet officers and crew. It was a strong ensemble cast who worked together as a team to solve problems. That is hallmark of Star Trek, by the way - the team works together to solve problems. Until now, that is.
@@john-lenin I'm guessing that's sarcasm? STNG was basically the same concept as TOS, just with different officers and crew and set slightly in the future.
Who knew Sonequa was into Glomping?
@MonkeyZorr Hmmm...I'm going to be realistic here about this actress without making it personal from an objective point of view. I can judge her professional state of being by divorcing myself from her political beliefs, basically. Honestly, I do like her acting abilities, I just don't think Discovery is the starring vehicle that shows us her true talent because it is written so badly.
Here's the problem with STD.
A lot of trekkies want a show that's happy go lucky and light, where apparently believable strong adults, never argue.
STD along with the jj abrams movies are rebranding. making it darker. more human. more serious. No strong character can ever be taken seriously without moments of strife and hardship, without flaws.
So more mainstream audiences like STD and the JJ movies.
Old- and usually right wing trekkies based on the comments all over youtube, want the old trek. Based on their arguments, you'd think these people don't ever watch quality tv. smh.
Trekkies want an ensemble, not the Burnham show. it can be dark, like DS9, but still have hope for the future. Yes, they can disagree, but it's Starfleet and you can't have the XO constantly challenging her captain. And Star Trek fans are an incredibly diverse fanbase with diverse political views, so don't paint all of us with a big brush. True Trek fans don't stereotype people, like you just did. Also, are you implying Star Trek wasn't quality tv? Ouch.
haha, your points are all very very fair. Like, I agree with you all the way, and apologize for the grouchy sentiments. Honestly, I think I was just in my feels about all the hate. Whatever the branding or original ideals or whatever, I think a good show is a good show. Instead of being so hung up on how you're used to trek, just consider it a non trek show and enjoy it for what it is.
I mean jeez, I can watch dexter and then watch brooklyn nine nine and then watch some travel doc and enjoy all the different themes and genres. Why can't that be done for STD? Is it nostalgia that makes y'all hate it so much? Because I don't think it's fair at all to say its an objectively shitty show.
Still a better sci-fi series vs a Star Trek series.
10:50 isn't what she's describing here sexual harassment? She certainly didn't get any ones consent if they're done from behind. Certainly the roles were switched and she was grabbed from behind, I can only imagine the cries that would go up to the Skies of sexism assault and racism on top of everything else. Why does she think this is acceptable in any kind of professional workplace? You can have fun without this kind of surprise physical contact. Has she learned nothing over the last couple years?

Century ships Huh?
yeah, my first thought as well, tho giving it another thought, the spelling may be a tad different with another implication. An Imperial 'Sentry' ship was a craft used to protect a secure area from intruding spacecraft.
starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Imperial_sentry_ship
I know that isn't Trek, however, it is closer to the Discovery cinematography and set visuals, lol. So I guess the Q is, what are the Imperial 'Sentry' ship protecting. hmmm.
Loving the views on this!
Anson might save the show. But the writing will likely sink it.
Maybe you should go watch reruns of the "Golden Girls"....that seems to suit your petty pitiful side.
Knightfall182, I agree with the skepticism, as the reasons why Discovery is so removed from anything that resembles Trek are far more than just writing and disregard for Trek canon. Sets, ship models, costumes and outfits, cinematography, the inability of Orcs to annunciate Klingon. Discovery is so far removed from the Trek universe in every aspect that, If the show wasn't called Trek, it may not have received the criticism that it has. I really feel bad for anyone on the staff that wants Discovery to be Trek, as season 1 clearly showed that Trek was not what management wanted it to be. At least JJ was honest and called the Kelvin timeline movies a Reboot, Discovery just took Reboot to another level of removing aspects that resemble Trek.
