Yeah it very much looked like she was in terrible pain. She's been terribly neglected & should have been taken to a vet long ago. Her legs look horrific. Bless you for looking after her and trying to tackle this.

to be fair, the condition of her hocks are only from her inability to move due to arthritis. they got in the shape they're in because of issues outside of her previous keepers control (age). she had a lovely life but unfortunately aging eventually takes over and it's hard to take note of everything when there are hundreds of other birds to look after. that's why she ended up with me. so I could give her special attention that would be hard to do otherwise. it's just unfortunate that her hocks ended up getting scraped up beforehand.

Would soaking her feet and hocks in Epson salt be a possibility? I've seen it do wonders for chickens and ducks who get bumble-foot or some other type of sores.

Poor little girl, her leg is hammered. Hope she gets to keep it. We were given a blue Crowned Conure 2 years ago who lived with my friends mom who smoked and then got dementia so I ended up with her.
Sha lived in a tiny cage her whole life and never got out. 2 years in she started having problems and allowed me to hold and scritch her. She however was happy and greeted us whenever we got home and took treats very nicely. She fell off her perch and I found her on the bottom of her cage but I scooped her up and hand fed her and she came back. Two weeks later she did it again so I held her and tried to feed her, the next morning she left us sitting on my stomach sleeping 😢
The vet said she was just wore out and things just shut down on her. She was at least in her mid 20s. Just wish I had worked with her sooner but I know she was happy and safe and knew she was loved at the end.
I miss her a lot more than I thought I would, she was quite a character.
I think your girl is going to be OK with time, she's active and strong, and she has you😍

That looks like a broken pelvis. We had a racing pigeon call Pied, high-condition racing bird, very powerful. It got spooked by a hawk and hit a window. We only kept pied going because Pied wanted to live. It even had to dangle for weeks in a sock - There was just nothing the avian vet themselves could do. But Pied didn't mind their sock providing a human to preen and be preened by happens at least twice a day. Spent the rest of it's very very happy ( but brain damaged, mangled life ) life sat on it's arse pretty much like that. It was the best pigeon we ever had. A cocky hen - Preen your eyebrows one minuet, decide to have a play fight the next ! It was one of the the most cheerful creatures I've ever met. Certainly liked living. But that is pretty much the position it was stuck in. Could fly. Couldn't stand up. Lost them eventually ( probably a hawk ) but we just weren't going to take The Garden away from this bird that loves it so much ( only put inside it's personal home when we've got the bulk racers out as they bully it and yes it comes in house of it's own accord ) and it really was only a matter of time. But they had a good time and that is what matters with a bird. Pied is Pied, a thing we call Hawk Bait. We glued on sequins in the hope of distracting the hawk. But there is only so much we can do. Not locking Pied up though. Pied needs The Garden.

I had to confine my cat for a couple months after a surgery, and since dog crates large enough to contain a litterbox tend to have large gaps between the bars, we got a fabric-and-mesh tent/playpen instead. It worked very well. The cat never managed to do any damage to the tent, but I don't know how a cat's mesh-ripping power compares to a toucan's.
It was Tenrai brand, and we picked it up on Amazon for like $80. (Not trying to sell you, just that's the one my cat couldn't rip through; I can't vouch for any other tent.)

Omg... 1800? That's awful. I'm so lucky here in Australia. We have 2 of the best avian vet clinics in the southern hemisphere hemisphere within 8km (5miles approx) of my home, and a consultation there is $85AUD (about 50USD). With blood tests, poop tests and meds, the average visit costs me around $250USD.
Re the lack of preening, perhaps a little spritz with a water spray with aloe in it might get her preening, which would also help with hydration.
Definitely low perching would help those hocks.
All the best with her, mate ❤

Poor baby. I hope her comfort level goes up, and her pain and suffering goes down. Meloxicam is good. My African Grey is so much more energetic and happy overall with Meloxicam twice a day (she had a stroke which partially disabled one foot). I have a very good avian vet nearby. By the way, my Grey often rests her chest on a ladder rung while standing on a lower ladder rung. It takes weight off her feet.

I recently lost my blue-fronted Amazon (45yo) who had pododermatitis like this on her legs for the last few years.
A DIY we did to keep her higher up the ground was we bought a wooden cutting board and drilled holes at the four corners and hung ropes on them, to then attach them to the top of her cage with shower curtain hooks. Since she couldn’t move around much, it stopped her from falling when unsupervised (at this point, she could only go out of her cage if we held her or put her on a table) and allowed her to still be at a relatively higher perch constantly. I don’t know if that could be a solution for her (she would have to have cage bars or something stopping her from falling)
We kept the board clean and comfy by putting a small blanket and then a few layers of paper that we could take out easily if it became too messy during the day (yes, sometimes she shredded it, but it still worked in terms of cleanliness)
Edit: 17:00 a crib would be great for her if it’s big enough

Make a little splint with a stick that has a a flat piece of wood or plastic under it that is covering her sores so she can still use her legs but the weight goes on the splint kind of thing instead of her injuries that way you can treat it without having to worry about the weight making it worse again

@2CANTV yay! I hope it helps her and you can find a vet asap. There are also 24 hour emergency vets in some cities. However, another possibility might be vet clinics at universities. I live near Ohio State University and it used to be that their vets were the only ones in our area to see exotics and snakes etc years ago.
You could also check with country vets (those serving poultry farms) and your local zoo for reference if your local vet is still unavailable and you can't find another. There are also wildlife rehab clinics that might be able to refer you to another vet. Perhaps some vets, who treat birds, volunteer there outside their clinics. Or the staff vet might know someone else who treats birds.
Good luck and keep us posted! :)
Edit: ah, just saw your post that she's been to the vet. Glad to hear it! I'm hoping you have good news! :)

There must be other content creators that you could reach out to that rehabilitate these kind of birds or birds like them perhaps they would be able to give you some over-the-counter advice of what you could get to help her legs and what they’ve done with birds they’ve gotten that have been really not treated well and came with a lot of issues like this I know the vet will help, but that’s just my advice. Thank you for caring for her and for the update. I am a bit concerned though, throughout the video she’s continually stressed with the physical contact you are giving her. At 26:32 she looks like she’s too weak even to put up more personal boundaries besides biting. I understand if you have to be attentive to her and hand feed her though, and I’m sure you step away from her off camera. Just throughout each update it seems like she’s really weary if you, and I hope she can get rest on her own as she adjusts. As a viewer, I’m okay with only getting minimal video clips of her over the next few weeks if that means she gets to have the space she needs to recuperate. Regardless, thank you for caring for her, I can’t imagine her going to a better home, and I’m sorry to hear about the vet cost.

Hm, I wonder if, with her legs being in pain, she's hopping onto the floor off of the blanket because the relative cool of the floor feels nice.

Oh I'm so sad for her and you. That injury looks so bad.. but she's going to heal. Even if she has to lose her leg, she'll adapt and be alright. You need a gofundme account. If i had $1800 i would give it to you...Bactine was something we used as kids for abrasions and slight injuries. It won't hurt to use it. It didn't sting on our Boo-boos. She may have a serious infection. The blanket might be keeping her too warm. Oh I'm so sad and worried about a person i don't know...water is ESSENTIAL! You might have to force water on her with a syringe... water is important. "Water in ya. Water in ya" we learned in vet tech school.

I know this seems crazy, but you might try laying down on the floor and letting her walk on you, next to you, because just being on the same level is sometimes cathartic to these upset birds. She is beaking you as a warning, but she's obviously not a cranky creature. It's tough to be so short...
