    What you are doing is very hard. They call it compassion fatigue. You work so hard to provide a good life for these birds, and in the end you feel like you are not making a difference, BUT YOU ARE! Beatrix lived the last part of her life in free air with a flock, which is far more than a lot of other birds in her position. I know she was thankful you gave her a chance to experience happiness at the end of her life. Thank you for taking on such a hard task, and for working so hard for the birds.

      @@2CANTV You are. There's no point doubting about yourself. You are a wonderful person regarding those birds. There ain't a lot of people like you out there. You're doing all you can, yet still strive to do more, just to make their life even a tiny bit better.

    Project Beatrix was such a Successful Rehabilitation story, what looked liked a “difficult”, “hopeless” and possibly mentally-ill bird possibly due to her previous bad adoption and neglect, you succeeded in saving her , prolonging, changing and giving the best remaining years of her life once she is with you (I remember the sudden happy look in her face once she experienced her first “Rain” outside in your new Sanctuary, that changed her life for Good); Thank you for taking Great Care for Her ❤

Especially if it's sudden. Beatrix's legacy will live on. She may have been a bitey menace, but she helped you educate thousands of people on UA-cam about her and her wonderful species.

    I remember when I started to keep birds as a teenager, they explicitly warned about galvanized/zinc coated cages in books. I guess netting wire could be galvanized too. So, yes, maybe breeders use galvanized netting or cages and the zinc somehow gets into the birds bodies.

    • @2CANTV
      @2CANTV  3 місяці тому +6

      your line of thinking is correct. but galvanized metal is really only dangerous for parrots specifically because they chew. softbills don't do that. so that's why we were thinking there had to have been some rusty bowls or something similar in the past that led to direct ingestion.

    I think you did the best you could for her. Animals just hit different when they pass, I think because in ways, animals are innocent. They don’t judge, the love they give is unconditional and they don’t understand right or wrong. Beatrix would have likely died never getting to enjoy acting being a bird if you hadn’t taken her. Be happy you did the best you could and let her feel loved. No apology is needed. And it’s ok to step back and grieve or just take a break

    Being an animal rescuer is a difficult job. This is why Ben Christie has said that he tries not to get overly attached to his animals. Simply because a lot of them arrive in bad shape, and a lot don't make it. Big Ounce had a lot of similar issues for example. So you kind of have to learn to make them comfortable while maintaining a certain level of disconnect, just to maintain your sanity. Which is easier said than done. Beatrix got dealt a bad hand, but she was lucky to wind up in a caring place, and even get to spend her final years outdoors with her own kind. Something she never would have gotten if she was still in that kid's bedroom. Just goes to show that wild animals are not pets. People should go buy chickens if they want a large, fancy looking bird. And even chickens still need a large outdoor space with regular care.

    • @2CANTV
      @2CANTV  3 місяці тому +9

      you're right but I honestly don't think i have it in me to disconnect. I've loved toucans so much ever since i was a kid and they all mean so much to me. maybe if i had dozens of them things would be different but I'm not so sure. right now I spend so much time with each of them on such a personal and intimate level that it's just impossible not to care so much. id like to think that i would never grow disconnected. I'm sure it would make things easier...but paying such close attention to them and knowing them so well has been what makes me so good at what i do I think. had i been disconnected, i may not have never even noticed anything was wrong with Beatrix at all in the week leading to her passing. additionally, birds like her and toupac need special attention regardless. it's hard not to grow to love someone when you invest so much time in them.

    Glad everyone is healthy and hopefully happy. :) Very exciting to hear about a potential new flock member!
    And you know what, Brock? At some point you have learned and gathered so much information about tucan nutrition, including in early phases of developement, common health issues and also how to correct some health issues, that you could write the ultimate guide on that topic for people who want to keep those birds, want to take care of rescues or even zoos and other sanctuaries. Oh, and for breeders too because if it's done, at least it should be done properly (same for people who want to keep them as pets: proper nutrition, enough space, proper roosting space, natural sunlight and so much more). You've become a real expert!

    It's so hard to watch these beautiful babies go through the hell that they go through. I have helped at a macaw and Amazon rescue for years. I think the hardest thing for you, is that because you want to run a sanctuary for toucans, that you will have to harden your heart. This kind of work is hard, because you care so much, but it also means you are going to see the saddest things from the animals you rescue and that will always test your resolve.
    You are giving all of your animals their best life. But you need to give yourself a break as well, both physically and emotionally. It might be better to hold off on another rescue until you have been able to rebuild your resolve.
    As far as streaming goes, you can always put up a camera on your birds and stream them all day, people love getting to watch stuff like that. One of my inlaws who couldn't move around much or go outside really loved having access to fish and bird streams on the internet.

    "Once upon a time, there was an old man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach every morning before he began his work. Early one morning, he was walking along the shore after a big storm had passed and found the vast beach littered with starfish as far as the eye could see, stretching in both directions.
    Off in the distance, the old man noticed a small boy approaching. As the boy walked, he paused every so often and as he grew closer, the man could see that he was occasionally bending down to pick up an object and throw it into the sea. The boy came closer still and the man called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”
    The young boy paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean. The tide has washed them up onto the beach and they can’t return to the sea by themselves,” the youth replied. “When the sun gets high, they will die, unless I throw them back into the water.”
    The old man replied, “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t really be able to make much of a difference.”
    The boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish and threw it as far as he could into the ocean. Then he turned, smiled and said, “It made a difference to that one!”

    It always baffles me how breeders could keep their birds in such awful conditions. Even if they don't care for the birds at all emotionally, keeping them healthy and happy is still an investment in a quality product. Though I also don't know why someone who doesn't care emotionally would even enter that field to begin with.

    you shouldnt have to apologize for this. you take care of birds and make video content second. i think we appreciate your effort to document what you do and show us these beautiful birds! i wouldnt blame you if you pulled back on either video creation or bird ownership. this is a lot of energy output. i cant imagine what it felt like to find out that she had the same heart condition you have, or at least something very similar. i love watching your videos, not because toucans are silly, but because your house and your habits are clear reflections of how much you go through to make sure these animals get to thrive. toupac lived for so long and so happily because of the accommodations you made for him. grieve the way that you need to. the toucans you rescue dont get dealt the same hand that normal birds do. im amazed at how much of your life youve dedicated to raising them and helping them any way you can. i hope you get to keep the toucans you have now for as long as you can. thanks for the update!

    One of my cockatiels had chronic health issues and it's the same, we don't know if he was "badly" bred, if there are some heditary things going on. No avian vet can tell me, or the prognosis, or what I can do.

    Brock, no idea if this is even a possibility, but I wonder if there is a chance that Beatrix was exposed to galvanized steel in a cage or other environment at all when she was young? Steel is galvanized with a protective coating of zinc. Just an idea.
    Beatrix was so fortunate to have had you to care for her and provide a full life, though she certainly didn’t seem to have a grasp of how to express gratitude with her little toucan brain. It is never easy to lose the animals we care for; it’s a hard, cruel reality that we must accept when we go down to those crossroads and give our love to these wonderful creatures. Thank you for all you do.

    • @2CANTV
      @2CANTV  3 місяці тому +4

      your line of thinking is on the right track. but the thing is that galvanized metal doesn't pose the same danger to softbills as it does parrots. parrots chew which is why more caution needs to be taken with what sort of mesh or wire is used around them. toucans don't do that. so if she accumulated zinc, it would have had to been directly ingested some how. which is why I was thinking maybe there were rusty bowls or something she was feeding in at some point.
      thank you for the kind words. it really does lift my spirits a lot to read things like this. it's my pleasure to do everything i can for them.

    Indeed @4:19 Beatrix has Hypertension aka HTN in medical terms. Of course Hypertension is almost always associated with Cardiac Disease, in humans & animals. Atherosclerosis or lipid/Fatty deposits inside arteries result in HTN which is actually High Blood Pressure. I know nothing about Toucans but clearly she has some congenital defect likely affecting her cardiac status. What a heart-breaking situation. Why anyone would breed these beautiful creatures without care for their health, they’re just cruel, wicked humans. This is so sad.

    Her zinc toxicity could have been caused by a cage she and\or her parents were kept in. Zinc coatings ate usually stable, but can oxidize. If a bird chews on cage parts they can injest it.

    Around you I see toucans as happy and healthy as they can be outside their wild, natural environment; I think you're doing so much good! Could the zink be just the wrong babyfood, like myna or softbill or starling food? I remember reading back from when they would give all baby birds just white bread soaked in milk, which makes me wonder how any survived, but some did...

    I'm sorry Brock but you did the best you could considering the information you had and what you could see. We had two fosters here, a Blue Crowned Conure and a Jenday Conure. Both are over 20 and needed to come here because their caretaker got dementia and couldn't take care of them, plus she constantly smoked.
    We've had both about two years and a month or so ago Kiwi, the blue crown, I found on the bottom of her cage and I thought she was gone but she was looking at me. I scooped her up and started feeding and getting water in her and eventually she pulled back up and seemed to be getting better slowly. She also loved the attention and cuddling but it was obvious she had a bad foot and probably had a stroke. She was having trouble getting around so put up extra perches, moved her food and water and put some towels on the cage floor. About 2 weeks later I found her on the floor again so I scooped her up, wrapped her in a blanket and let her sleep on me while I tried to feed and water her again. Found her at 9 and she passed in my hands at 10;30 that morning. She only started to really trust me when she got sick but she always greeted me and wanted treats when I was home that she took nicely. She even was allowing scratches.
    Vet said, heart, liver, or kidneys gave out on her but she was just old and basically shut down.
    She wasn't my main bird and she mostly sat in her cage forever, but she seemed to be happy in our flock so I wish I had worked with her sooner but didn't want to push her too hard and freak her out.
    I sure missed her greeting when I got home from work the next day and the sideways looks she'd give us when she knew we had a treat she wanted. She would cluck like a chicken and laugh, and loved making clicking noises and having us make whatever she did back.
    I'm right there with you and we have a very nice box with her ashes in it and a really good picture of her and I smiling at each other on my knee. 😢

    Boy, it sure sounds like lead/zinc poisoning--perhaps her previous home used metal waterers that contained these metals, providing a consistent, low-dose poison to her? I know some metal wire animal enclosures have a zinc coating... With birds it can be more than one issue that cascades with the addition of others. I've always had the same trouble finding vets that treat chickens--they are viewed as disposable, so I feel your pain. You sound like a fantastic birdkeeper, very conscientious. So sorry for your loss, and no apology is necessary.

    I had iguanas for about 20 years. Now that they have passed on, Im actually relieved not to need to make lizard salads, clean cages, dump poopy water, lug giant bags of vegetables home from the store, find reliable people to watch them, rack up giant vet bills, and guard against being murdered by my very aggressive male. But I still think exotics are neat, and am glad to vicariously enjoy others, now that I dont have the energy to keep up a great life for any new ones. Hopefully other people will just enjoy your birds, rather than running out & getting animals they cant take proper care of.

    You gave that Bird what many never get to experience. A Flock. Where she wasn't forced to interact with Humans against her Will. Well mostly. You gave her best Chances and it shows in how long this battered and sick Bird lived with you. She got to experience Happiness, i'm sure.
    Not all Rescues heal well. Not all gonna have a long Life.
    So you give all you have as long they last and feel well.
    The Findings are very interesting.
    For the Zinc. Could that be from Cage gnawing? Birds get poisoned from this regulary.
    So happy seeing you and the Flock again. Glad you do well even with that constant Heartache of having to let go.
    Keep Care you all.

    Beatrix went through hell and back before you found her. You brought her back from the brink and I know for a fact she respected and cared about you even if she never did fully open up. But that doesn’t mean she DIDN’T open up at all, far from it! We all witnessed over the years how she went from complete isolation to being able to not only integrate with the other birds, but start to allow you to feed her! What you did was no small fete, be proud of how much you improved her quality of life during her time with you ❤
    When we care for animals, we bond with them. Doesn’t matter if they’re sweethearts or complete brats, the time we invest in them forms a bond that will always bring us heartache when their time comes to cross the rainbow bridge. Just remember that unlike what their end of life COULD have been they were able to pass in peace and surrounded with love.
    As for the streaming; don’t feel pressured to be in streams. You can just have an observation cam stream, you’d be surprised how many people would have it up all the time just to see your beauties!
    Above all….take care of yourself, friend. They need you healthy both in mind and in body, so don’t be ashamed to do whatever you need to do to be able to give those birds the life they deserve ❤

    One thing you might want to think about with what you do: you went through this with Ripley, Maeve, Toupac, and now Beatrix.
    Unfortunately, it’s eventually going to happen again at the end of the other birds’ lives.
    It’s not going to make it any easier to take, but you might want to consider plans on how to handle this in the future, whether it’d be with other animal caregivers, family, therapists, etc.

    please give yourself peace, you did everything you could and you took a sick bird out of a bad situation. And at least gave her a better life than she would've had. Blaming yourself will not help your cause or any of the other birds you have. It is always hard to close a chapter, but maybe this would be a good ending. Dealing with Beatrix has gave you a lot more knowledge and understanding of how to look for the signs and learn on how to deal with birds that are not as healthy. That is what she left with you.... now it is time to put that into action.

    What if you become the leader and pioneer (with your vet) in congenital heart issues in toucans? I mean, you have so much personal experience yourself in both congenital heart issues and toucans 💁‍♀️

      i wish i had known when she was with us. it does hurt knowing there was so much wrong that we weren't aware of. but maybe it's more common with toucans than we realize. lots to think about and consider. if i see similar problems in the future, perhaps we can test more directly and see if there are similar problems. only time will tell.
