  • Starting with a bare concrete floor, we'll be doing a full install of RaceDeck Free-Flow tiles to give new life to the garage! RaceDeck is one of the leading garage floor suppliers specializing in polypropylene tiles which are 100% waterproof, and "resistant to most household chemicals and petroleum products" making it a great option for your workspace. They are fully designed and manufactured in Salt Lake City, Utah, and shipped directly from their facility there.
    We'll walk through the reasons I went with this flooring option over an epoxy coating and briefly compare it to Swisstrax, the most competitive alternative. As a space where I'll be changing parts, brakes, and oils on motorcycles, the Free-Flow tiles have given me a great workspace flooring and already held up great from the daily parking and maneuvering in the garage.
    During the video I'll give some heads up before you purchase and install your own tile flooring along with several quick assembly tips to make the install and cutting process easier. With the right tools, the install can be done in just a few hours and I am thrilled with the results!
    Feel free to ask any questions that you've got, enjoy!

    Hi Philip, great job. I will be redoing my garage floor in December. This video was real helpful. I live in Arizona so I need to worry about HEAT. I work in my garage all year long as a mini lab so I had to put a minisplit in.

      Thanks Mike! Hope that project goes well, use knee pads! I need to get some garage door insulation to keep the heat out, I plan to do that soon. Hopefully if you have rolly chairs in your shop the grooves wouldn’t be too aggressive. Also be sure to wait for BlackFriday/Cyber Monday sale, it’s a significant savings overall!

    I would of finished under the Water Heater just put a Tile down fill it in with some coloured cocking so that doesn’t stand out like a sore thumb just work around the stand in my own opinion ! Otherwise Great Job looks nice !

      Yes great point! I bought the tiles to go under it, just needed to jack it up and slide the tiles under the legs but I didn’t have it done yet when I made the video.

    What I am interested in, is what happens after your hot tires have been parked on this product? Does it damage or discolor?
    Also, what happens when you turn your wheels while parked on it?

    • @PhilipBlank
      @PhilipBlank  Місяць тому

      Great question! And nice initials haha. Honestly I’ve been super impressed with the lack of wear on them! The gray and black have not shown really any damage, it’s up in the 90-100s here in the summer and it has a Tacoma, and Highlander in and out of it. If you look super close you can sea some rubber debris on the surface that rubs off, but definitely no sticking or damage from the tires. The cars are mostly straight in and out when some turning while backing a car in, so I don’t have much info on if you did a larger room where you are actively turning around. I am planning to do a 2 year review on it, personally I still love it for how I use my garage and plan to install it in my next house even if I do an epoxy floor.

    Hello Philip, Awesome job. Looks clean man. I have the same garage style, what style did you go for this tile project? Looks like checkered or something else?

    • @PhilipBlank
      @PhilipBlank  6 місяців тому

      Hey Ian! Thanks, still love the floor, one of the best simple upgrades! The tiles I used are the Free-Flow, and only in Gray and Black. The checkered you’re seeing is the result of the free-flow having lines at 90 degree angles within a single tile. The light makes it appear checkered, but it is still just a single color tile. The black tile square I having running along the outer is to help guide the cars in when we park and just to add contrast instead of all gray.

    Very nice look and seems easy enough to do however for me I use my garage for too many different trades and you wouldn't see my floor 1/2 the time anyway. I wish I only had 2 shelves and a bike or two to fill my garage. You can't even see my walls right now. LOL

    • @PhilipBlank
      @PhilipBlank  5 місяців тому

      Haha that’s fair, I definitely keep my garage extremely minimalist as I don’t have woodworking equipment stores in there, it’s really a car park with cleaner tools and gear mounted on the walls, I have an outdoor shed for the dirty normal garage equipment. Definitely a luxury to have a clean space!

    Great job! Was it noisy when you’re walking being that it’s plastic over concrete?

    • @PhilipBlank
      @PhilipBlank  3 місяці тому +1

      Nope! If you have a flat base of concrete there is really not any creaking or noises I’ve noticed, actually makes the room more quiet with less echoing in my opinion.

    is the fact they're open to the floor underneath a pro or a con? clearly they were designed to be open, but why? you spill oil or do woodworking and now that's all fallen through the tiles and underneath the floor. i suppose with closed tiles you might worry about moisture underneath, so maybe install on top tiles are just not a good idea in general?

    • @PhilipBlank
      @PhilipBlank  Рік тому +4

      Great question! I think it completely depends on what your goal is for your space. The Free-flow tiles are intentionally open, they offer closed tiles which are RaceDeck Diamond plate or CircleTrac(cost more, far more material). The free flow is open specifically for water to move so you can wash cars on it and it won’t hold moisture, less chance for mold. It works well for general garage usage. Now if you are buying for a woodworking shop you wouldn’t be using water near your equipment and would probably want the closed tiles (unless you have lots of moisture coming through your concrete). But for light cutting and the small projects I’ve done, I’ve been fine using a shop-vac to pull sawdust out of the cracks and leaf blower to get bugs and leaves out. Oil is a big concern as that would be a pain to get out from underneath, I’ve just used a drip tray and cardboard like I normally would on concrete. An epoxy floor coating would work great for both cases so no issues with it, but again the cost goes significantly up and I can’t take it with me which is why I found this option to be my best choice. Looks great too!

    After you ordered how long did it take to ship/deliver?

      I ordered back in 2022, but I submitted the order on a Monday afternoon and the floors all arrived on the Friday, so 4 business days. Pretty quick for 322 lbs of boxes!

    The color combo looks good despite the brain fart of the one sq.foot vs two sq.feet and a rubber mallet would have worked much easier

    • @PhilipBlank
      @PhilipBlank  Рік тому +1

      Definitely felt like an idiot once I figured out the 2sq ft issue haha but I’m glad because I really like the wider stripe! RaceDeck was great to work with when I emailed them, they sent me the exact amount of black I had in gray and printed me a label to send the gray back with, couldn’t ask for better service on their side!

      Shop the sales! They have some pretty killer deals that take off several hundreds in the long run. I was just working on the garage yesterday and realized how much I still love the floor and am very glad I got it. I’ll have to do a follow up 2 year review on it!

  • @zoner__

    ouch! invest in a rubber mallet.

    • @PhilipBlank
      @PhilipBlank  9 місяців тому +1

      Haha I got one, Tried both and they can both do the job, prefer the precision of the metal, but a small face dead blow would probably work excellent and be the top choice!
