New subscriber here. Nice to see someone who gets it. The band is built on contrast. Things are not quite what they seem. Saiki has co-written five songs now. And l have been able to see them four times here in California. The Maid costume confused many at first including myself six years ago. Gimmick? Sure, but a gimmick with a purpose. Serving the audience just like customers are served in Maid Cafés where Miku worked and first got the idea. I look at the maid attire which goes through evolution just about every year as an ethos and a mission statement. How refreshing to see artists who appreciate their fans so genuinely. Western artists could learn something from this. You will see Endless Story which closed the Yokohama Arena show celebrating 10 years in show business and you will be touched. About ego. They all have plenty to spare. You do not make yourself up like this and present yourself without having an ego but the thing is it's a healthy ego and not a narcissist one. My favorite band of all time is the Beatles. Band-Maid has become my second all time favorite and revived a long dormant interest in rock music in particular.
Sacramento loves BM 😂
Greeting to Sacramento (US) from Sale (AUS)
Also from California! Thanks for the comments and info!
Miku plays two instruments. The guitar and Saiki. No doubt Miku can hear Saiki in her head as she writes the lyrics.
From that point of view you need to add Miku's own vocal parts as #3 instrument. I don't think few if any other band uses their back up singer so creatively. Harmonizing seems to be the norm.
That's a really good point about Miku writing the lyrics but Saiki singing them; as always the band members interlock beautifully, yet challenge each other. Cool format for a reaction: while we all love seeing people "get it" (or rather, start to) on first listen, Band-Maid has so much depth and complexity that one doesn't start to appreciate them until after multiple listens (preferably on headphones) and thinking about it a bit.
Mincho also said that she always imagines Saiki singing when she composes a new song (except for instrumental songs, of course).
The only time Mincho didn't think about Saiki's singing was when she composed ALONE😏
Saiki wrote this one, not Miku, because...well, there are many rumours. It was about Saiki's relationship...or a friend of hers'...or a pop star's relationship that was a social media storm in Japan...or...well, only Saiki knows really! If any member left the band, it would be finished. They could all go onto individual projects but...
Miku forges the sword that Saiki pierces our hearts with. But in Hate Saiki wrote a sledgehammer and brings it down hard. I like both approaches.
Don't overthink it. Kanami is watching MISA, from as up close as she can get while not being in the way. You'll see in other 'duel' segments where they lean down till their faces are practically in one another's strings.
The time Kanami crouches by Miku in Freedom is a troll. Miku had flubbed her lines for that part recently and Kanami was 'watching' her closely too.
Pretty funny.
Best rock band on the planet.
To crouch down is not directly to honour, but to get out of the "spotlight" and to give "all the light" to someone else. MISA did the same thing for Mincho, and Miku does it for Akane before the drum solo in Domination.
I do recall reading an article that early in *BAND-MAID* years when they did a lot of traveling and that *Miku* and *Saiki* had to share one room and *Kanami, Akane* and *MISA* had to share the other room which they called the fun room opposed to the room that *Miku* and *Saiki* share. 🙃
I imagine there must have been pillow fights but in which rooms.🤣
Too funny!!!
Thanks for the thoughtful comments. It is amazing to see a group of extremely talented musicians that don't let their egos get i the way of their success. I subbed for more of your insights.
Brent, you described exactly what I was thinking between Miku and Saiki. They are two frontwomen, each with their own role in the band. Which wouldn't work at all in another band because it would surely create conflict between the two members. However, Miku stated that at the very beginning with Saiki, their collaboration risked being complicated as their personalities were very opposed. Miku is very extroverted and Saiki very shy. But the pigeon is very intelligent and knows, thanks to his experience in a Maid Café, how to resolve conflicts. They have now been together for almost 11 years. We should also not neglect the role of the other members whose kindness Saiki highlighted. It is a deep and sincere friendship that binds them all and we are happy about it. Let's be realistic, Miku's departure could be a possibility in the future. When she released her album under the name Cluppo, this is what I feared. Even if it were to happen like this, Kanami in the documentary said that they would all remain friends no matter what. That doesn't stop them from teasing each other because they always have fun on stage. In Freedom, Kanami blocks Miku's view of a teleprompter because she made a mistake at a previous concert while singing her verse. There is, however, a lot of mutual respect. Miku was Kanami's student who taught her how to play the guitar. I wanted to make a short commentary but I got carried away as always when the subject is Band-Maid. Sorry. Thanks Brent.
Very well said. Thank you!
greeting from Japan😊
kanami says she wants to see more coolness.
freedom, MIKU also asks kanami 😅
kanami says that she did that she did that because she was happy that MIKU was getting better at playing the guitar😮
You understand the complexities of this band so well, sir!👏You earned my subscription to your channel. Just a slight difference of opinion with one thing tho - I don't agree that Band-Maid can continue absent Saiki OR Miku. Our Miku AND our Saiki are both equally cherished and needed...honestly, I cannot see B-M existing with ANY of its members gone...but, yeh, that's just my view. Great vid - looking forward to more!
Miku is BAND-MAID and Saiki is BAND-MAID and Akane is BAND-MAID and Misa is BAND-MAID and Kanami is BAND-MAID. I believe I've made my point 🎸🐦🎸🎸🎤🥁☮️🇨🇦🙂
Agree with you. IMHO the balance of the vocals is a critical component of bandmaid's music, it adds richness and beauty to the songs and IMHO makes the emotional impact greater.
Yup, I think most of us agree on this...each member of B-M is indispensable ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
The vocal harmony of Miku and Saiki is perfect and is one of the essential elements of Band-Maid. It is common in Japan to see one or more members leave a group and be replaced without this affecting its balance. In the case of Band-Maid this would be impossible IMO.
I also think each member is indispensable. I was just thinking if the band HAD to go out and play in a week without one member... Also, I was also coming from the point of view of Saiki's importance. I adore Miku and think she is the most amazing person. They are all amazing, but perhaps Miku the amazingist!
Miku was actually trolling Kanami in Freedom..Miku had messed up her lines (part) during a previous performance..So Kanami sat in front of Miku's monitor to tease her..hence Miku's glance...To this day....Kanami usually trolls Miku during Freedom!..Did so during the US tour if I recall.
Thanks Brent. I agree with your comments. Although the Maids usually all crouch down during solos if they're toward the front of the stage. Especially in small venues. And no doubt it's ultra rare to see an egoless band. That is, without ego. The entertainment and FUN factor is another attraction. See if you can come up with a negative about BAND-MAID because I can't. Awesome is as Awesome does. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥Peace. 74
about maid cafes😊
maid cafes are a subculture born in the 80's ,.but they are also a revival of a certain tradition.
geisha cafes.have existed in Japan for a long time , dating back hundreds of years😮
If there's such a thing as 5-way yin & yang, I think that's Band-Maid. So much variation among members, but respect for each other and respect for the band as a whole. I don't think I realized how solid Saiki and Miku's friendship was until the Band-Maid Nippon radio shows. All throughout their conversations, it seemed like the only thing lacking was beer and snacks. I also take Saiki at her word when she said she has only a few good friends and a tsundere personality: arms length at first, but once you're in, it's for good. That's one of the reasons I feel like Hate? is likely very personal: someone in her friend circle gets dumped. Let the wrath commence!
i believe Konami was crouching down in front of Miku to block the prompter because Miku had forgotten her lyrics in anearlier concert. That's why Konamai had the devilish smile on her watching Miku perform her lines in Freedom Live. lol
That is hilarious. I wouldn't put it past her!
MISA also crouches to Kanami during her first portion of the conversation. That is the respect these two artist have for one another. It's a beautiful thing to see. I'm glad another fan picked up on that.
Saiki’s lyrics tend to be emotional and straight forward whereas Miku's lyrics are typically uplifting and full of metaphor (often difficult to understand even for Japanese).
In an interview, Saiki (the lead vocalist) explained about the "?" mark in the title of this song. When Saiki wrote the lyrics, she wanted to use the phrase "I hate you". She decided the title to be "HATE", and then she realized that "HATE" could be read "はて" in Japanese. Because "はて" is typically used in question, she put "?" to make the title "HATE?". I'm sure that Saiki was smiling a lot when decided on this title with "?" because she guessed that English speaking fans would be puzzled by it.
"はて?" can be translated as "What?"
Btw, Miku used to tease and annoy Saiki a lot for the first few years, but Miku knew how much and when to stop it. I guess that it was Miku's way to make Saiki feel that she is the member of this band because Saiki wasn't communicative with other members first.
Very interesting. Thank you for that information. Very helpful!
Thank you for this. I hope you continue to share your thoughts with us. We both love this band and your perspective shines a light in places I'd not seen.
Thanks! I am glad you find it useful.

Great video! It keeps amazing me how unlikely a band Band-Maid is, and celebrating their 10th anniversary! Apart from great songs and great musicianship, what makes Band-Maid so special is their evident friendship and mutual support through all the difficulties of the band, and through all the difficulties of life, beyond their individual differences. The existence of this band is truly magic and a great joy - and reason for hope - to me and to many other people. Truly inspiring!
Well said!
Great commentary Brent. Always enjoy seeing a musician's take on Band-Maid and yours is exceptionally point on. Subbed.
Thanks!
The story I’ve heard on the ? Part of Hate? Is it’s kind of a pun in Japanese. By adding the question sound to the word hate it makes it sound like a Japanese word that means something else.
This could all be wrong, I don’t speak Japanese.
I’ve also heard the story that for Freedom, in the previous performance Miku flubbed her line, so Kanami was keeping an eye on her to see if she’d mess up again. I think Freedom might be their most performed live song, they’ve played it so often that it’s second nature to them and they can goof off
Right, in romanized Japanese, it can be read as "ha-te?", which means something like "huh?". According to Miku, Saiki often says "ha-te?". Saiki also said that she was inspired by the scene in The Simpsons where Bart repeatedly says, "I hate you!" in rapid fire (Source: SPICE interview).
I love your reaction to this song. It is refreshing to hear this type of analysis that is informed, insightful, well delivered. A lot of reaction videos are starting to seem very much alike and thus getting somewhat boring. Cudos.
Thanks, I appreciate that!
Very well said, Brent! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with us.

:You need to watch the Saiki documentary, to really get a handle on her
I hope you get to see them live someday.
there is no hate when these girls perform..only love..im definitely in love with em now. Awesome band.
I think in the early days that Miku's personality probably overwhelmed Saiki, I speak from experience as I have a very overwhelming personality and have to pull back sometimes when I see someone feeling uncomfortable around me. There are a few instances where I felt Saiki was quite annoyed with Miku's antics but over the years, of course, they have become friends and as you point out now work as a duo promoting the band rather than in the early days when it was all Miku. One of the things that struck me at the end of Yokohama, during Endless Story, that Saiki, especially at live shows and at this moment, has almost taken over from Miku as the focal point of the band, understandable of course as she is the lead singer, but I never felt it come across this strongly before. As you said about Kanami, she is giving Misa her moment to shine, Misa reciprocates later during the conversation. Saki will often turn her back on the crowd and stand near Akane's drums when Kanami has a solo so that the crowds attention is firmly on Kanami, how respectful they all are to each other.
I noticed that too in Endless Story. Saiki was able to be a focal point, and Miku did not chime in until things were wrapped up. Saiki has grown so much. Very cool.
Very thoghtfull comment. Thanks! Abaout Saiki's lyrics. I think coralium were first she wrote, well at list she was acredited for. But yes the diference (i rely on translations) is visible. I think understandably as Miku told in interwievs she never write directly about her feelings, thoughts ... Saiki seems to have oposite aproach. They are simply oposite as persons, While i was listening you it come to my mind that you have to listen multiple interwiews to find anything personal abaout Miku even if she talks all the time . Saiki talk less ... much less but somehow she told more details of her personal life than Miku. At least not less than her.
Anyway as i said, i liked verry much your comments and i hope to hear more in future.
You can't be positive all the time. Sometimes you need to vent. Kanami stated that she composed the music to "Hate?" in an angry mood one day. She told the band-members about her mood when she composed the song. Miku and Saiki both wrote lyrics to the song and the band used Saiki's lyrics. Saiki stated that she was really angry at the husband of a friend and Japanese pop singer, who cheated on her during the pandemic and got caught. Miku is very subtle and circumspect. Saiki is very direct (like her mother), thus the brutal but funny lyrics of the song. Their music is phenomenal. These five really do respect and love each other and all of their fans. What a group!!!!!
Great information Bill. You have answered some questions I had. That makes a lot of sense. Thank you.
Good job!
Did you also know the members of Lovebites were at this concert and during " Don't You Tell Me" when Saiki was on the lower stage getting ready to head back up she spotted them and pointed with a big smile.
Yes, I did hear that somewhere. How cool!
Minor correction, they weren't "solo duets", but duets and trio's, as Akane was slaughtering the drum kit in support, and I think Miku was also adding her bit.
Miko is sometimes dismissed as a good singer and founder of the band. But I think it goes further. I remember that during Covid Miku did some radio shows with Saiki. Before then the cool aloof singer had always been good and powerful since the days she had to have an operation. But she was always in the background. But on the radio she was pushed to talk and laugh and make jokes at Miku's expense. From then on she shared the spotlight more on stage. She has written a few songs now. She is brave enough to play the piano on stage. Plus her presence and emotional expression of a song has improved. She has become the perfect front woman. Miku and her backing still adds the extra layer of emotion. Without her I am not sure the very shy MISA would have been pushed to take centre stage during a performance. Or Saiki to become the twin spokesperson. Yes Akane would have always smiled and shown off because she has charm and skill and personality. Kanami has come forward more too. Let's hope that vision Miku had never changes. Give Miku a book on brain surgery and a week later she could complete an operation. No Miku, no Band Maid.
Well said!
I thought this video was about hatred of Band Maid. I was excited for a second. Nevermind
about ego, imo😊
epistemology in western philosophy use the ego as its starting point, but the different is that the ego, which was influenced by Japanese Zen Buddhism , is the goal to be achived😮
There’s an early concert video, recorded as a single wide shot of the stage, where KOBATO and SAIKI are wearing matching black dresses and white aprons. It’s uncomfortable to watch, with a disorienting visual symmetry: an identical maid with a microphone (KOBATO has no guitar at this point), on either side of the drum set. Moving to contrasting looks was definitely the right thing to do. In addition to the points you raise, it’s been important that each member develop their individual style, not only for a richer visual esthetic, but to further highlight and distinguish the unique personality of each member. It makes the band so much more engaging. Fans of the Monkees and KISS understand this well.
It's amazing how Band-Maid has rewritten the laws of nature: Hate brings Love! 😖--->🎀--->😍

Thx, Brent!
It wasn't the management, it was MISA, Akane and Kanami who told Miku her voice was too soft to front the type of music she wanted. They also told her that the band needed another guitar for a fuller sound. Miku went to her agency and they said said they had someone, but they didn't she would go for the maid costumes and might not be able to deal with Miku. So they tricked her, no Miku at practice/rehearsal and told Saiki the costumes were cool. When Miku finally showed up the day before their first gig with the maid costumes, Saiki Did Not Walk out, a great moment in Rock History.
Miku chose learn the guitar with the condition that Kanami would be her sensi. She's been an excellent student, she even somethings better than Kanami - per Kanami!!
Only Miku and Saiki were under contract to the agency, Misa, Kanami and Akane were paid musicians!!! In 2015 when the agency was going to dump Misa, Kankmi and Akane to create Dance Maid with Miku and Saiki the plan went into the dumpster because of "Thrill".
Last thing - Band Maid major fan base is outside of Japan, primarily the US and Europe. Rock/Metal music comes 3rd to Jpop & Kpop.
Great info. Thanks!

I see things a little differently, for me Kanami is the "Yin" and Miku and Saiki are the "Yang", although in reality it is much more complicated than that, since Misa and Akane's skills have always affected the Mincho's compositional choices.
Plus, I don't think a self-confessed Namie Amuro fan would be more of a rocker than Miku, who has proven to be a fierce rhythm guitarist.😉
Miku is a great and entertaining rhythm guitarist. I still think her personality still comes across as a little more pop. Thanks!
Every time I see Miku wearing her Kuplo costume I think, what if... Miku and Tomo-Zo will join together to do a mini tour in small clubs in Tokyo and Osaka singing the songs that they usually perform in their bands, (add the support female musicians, not from their own bands, to your liking) how much would you pay to see that?😲
