Thanks for doing this one! Yes, a lot of Japanese artists mix Japanese and English lyrics. That's my biggest issue with all of the Band Maid videos. The camera spends at least half of the time only on Saiki or Miku, probably because of their looks.
The reason this is two songs is that it and another video, Dice/Different, were done for a lockdown era Japanese government program which encouraged video releases but they had to be at least 5 minutes, IIRC, in length.
Well, considering the fact that MISA is just a bit over 5'8", yes, that bass is huge. And yes, that is amazingly tall for a Japanese woman. Akane is 5'6"...Saiki is 5'4"...and the two tiny guitar dynamos are Kanami 5'1" and Miku 5'.
There are basically 3 different ways the Japanese tackle their vocals in their rock or metal songs, but the mix of English and Japanese is done by a lot of bands. The others either have pure Japanese or pure English vocals. I believe Band-Maid's lyricist and backing vocals/rhythm guitarist Miku uses English or Japanese depending on what fits best with the music for that specific part of the song because both languages have different sounds and cadences.

I agree with 754... From now on.. should be checked out. Akane has my full respect. On in a million. It's not easy to find a female drummer that caliber these days. Hope that Andrew finds some time to comment on that song...
Manners shows us that these ladies can groove, write and play awesome melodic lines and great bass playing. Black Hole demonstrates organized chaos, in a good way.
In the acoustic version of Sayonakidori, Akane does backing vocals for Miku as well as playing the drums with special soft sticks. They are joined only by Misa. No Kanami or Saiki. It is a beautiful work of art. Sayinakidori means “nightingale,” but also “the bird that cries at night.”
Miku's lyrics are a mixture of English and Japanese, which is not so unusual in Japanese music. However, sometimes her approach is to make one phrase sound similar but have different meanings in Japanese and English. This gives her lyrics a little more depth.
Hi, Andrew, and greetings from across the Ditch in Aus! Thanks for getting back to Band-Maid, always nice to see them get some appreciation. They're touring the US again shortly, and I can only hope that they'll do an Australasian tour eventually. I'm not sure if they've been suggested previously, but another all female Japanese band you might appreciate is Lovebites. They have a powerhouse drummer, Haruna, known as the Pocket Nuke ( she's 4'9"). Their genre is metal, ranging from thrash, to speed metal, to.... well they have practically established their own genre. What other metal concert will give you a Chopin piano etude? Lovebites do! One of their two amazing lead guitarists is a classically trained pianist. But back to Haruna, she can keep up a blistering pace on the double kick for a 2 hour concert and not raise a sweat. She is also a friend of Akane from Band-Maid. There's plenty of tracks to choose from, this is one of their heavier numbers which showcases the drummer. Cheers. ua-cam.com/video/99zsH6iG_6c/v-deo.html
I can't believe that you have only done two reactions to Band Maid, with this being the third. There is SOOOOOOO much more to delve into. If you like instrumentals, they do a bang-up job with them. My two favorites are the official live video of "Onset" and the music video for "From Now On". I know that you will a great job in breaking down what is going on. To me, they are masterpieces of technical precision performed with very high grade musicianship. From what I have read, Kanami (lead guitarist & genius-level composer) came to Akane (the High Priestess of the Temple of the Perfect Fill, lol) and asked her what her top bpm is. Akane said 190 bpm, so Kanami said I'm writing a song at 220 bpm, deal with it. And that became Black Hole.
I have been following Bandmaid for some years now, and believe they are one of the best in the world, along with Lovebites. I honestly think that they are the only band who could do Blackhole, it is just out of this world, incredible. I believe Kanami writes most of their songs now, and maybe this why this song is just wonderful, she knows the girls so well and they are all given their parts.
The Band-Maid bluRays often have a few videos that feature everyone on a white stage. One track pans among the five, and there are separate tracks that focus on an individual member.

Black Hole isn't one of my favourite songs, but it is also one of my absolutely favourite songs! It is confusing, chaotic and unfocused. They've thrown every single idea they came up with for the song in together and don't seem to have edited at all writing it. In this song it is absolutely perfect to do that. To me this is the most conceptual song of theirs and honestly more than a lot of more conceptual bands manages to do. The song really is wall of unstoppable energy as chaotic and overwhelming as I imagine a black hole to be. I guess I imagine a getting sucked in to a black hole would be as much of getting sucked in to a comic book tornado.
As a special bonus on some of their albums and EPs they've released multi-angle videos so you can focus on specific members during an entire song. I think band-maid need to do more of those.
You need to track down one of their Tutorial Videos. It's just them playing in a white studio and there's 5 videos per song. One of each instrument and then one of it edited all together. The reason I say this is you could just do the Drum Video. It may take some looking but they're out there. A couple other songs in the same vein are 'Different' and 'Rinne'.
I don't think those are meant as tutorial videos, they are just extras that come with the special editions of some of their albums. The Conqueror limited edition DVD/Blu-ray editions (white room) came with: - Domination (Instrumental Video) - Dice (Instrumental Video) - Onset (Instrumental Video) Unseen World limited edition DVD/Blu-ray editions (white room): - After Life (Instrumental Video) - No God (Instrumental Video) - Giovanni (Instrumental Video) - Without Holding Back (Instrumental Video) Unleash limited edition DVD/Blu-ray editions (white room): - Unleash!!!!! They certainly aren't officially on yt, they might be around, I have no clue.
The switch between Japanese and English isn't unique to Band-Maid, but Miku (who writes most of the lyrics) often uses it to facilitate the rhythm. In many situations, English phases have fewer sylables than their Japanese equivalents, so she sprinkles in English to preserve the flow. Other times, a particularly dense Japanese verse fits the song well, with Saiki bringing a rap-like delivery.
Awesome. An overhead Akane-Cam would have been nice but you can't have everything in life...the ears are more than happy :-) Bass and drums are always the ultimate unit with the Maids. MISA works hard in manners...soloing at the same time as the guitar...a low-key regular maid Rock feature.

Senri has solo stuff, Kiyo*Sen, The Jazz Avengers and a LOT of freelance recordings for other artists. She just had the 10th anniversary of her first solo album and she is only 26. - Kanade Sato: Just turned 20, but she is an amazing drummer. Kanade Sato is in the Fusion groups "Muses" (with bassist Juna Serita among others who played with Tamu in the past as well) and "Ear Candy Jazz Factory", plays with Rie a.k.a. Don't get me wrong, all of them are very good drummers and I like all of them a lot, but Senri has been my favourite Japanese drummer (and one of my favourite drummers period) and Kanade Sato is fantastic as well. Great reaction brother! I could detect to some extent during the song what was getting you going, I love Akane and typically whenever I do reaction video collaborations to the Maids it's always Akane men and women gravitate too, after 2-3 songs.
It's quite normal for Japanese songs to have English mixed in with the lyrics, but I was surprised that people overseas used to take it negatively, but recently it's been taken positively. When composing music, using other languages to express sounds and meanings as much as possible is also done in classical works such as "haiku, senryu" other than music, and it is very natural for Japanese.

Unfortunately, because each member is pretty much always contributing something awesome and we can't watch all of them at once there's always gonna be the feeling of missing something. BAND-MAID sound is is 99% BASS! To be completely honest, I don't think this is a live stream. Sounds and looks like songs are comped from multiple live performance and touched up here and there. I've seen plenty of live show footage of them and the rock live but this sounds to clean for a live stream.
Bass is only stronger in the live setting...studio recordings favour more detail in the guitar layering and everything else. Dice or Blooming MVs are good examples. I enjoy the two different presentation styles. I didn't see this original live stream but others I've watched and recorded were really very good.
You can compare with the live stream which someone has posted on a certain Chinese site. From what I can tell, the sound was recorded onto the mixing desk and some balancing done post-production. Possibly some vocal tweaks. The official live video with manners uses a different selection of camera angles in places, partly to edit out Akane goofing off at the camera. Other bits are as per the original live stream. I think some bits of the drumming have been tidied up as well. I didn't spot any obvious signs of multiple performances though - no continuity errors, invisible cameras etc.
I like the song, but I have to say (and it's rare these days) that I find the overall mix to be a little jarring. particularly during the first part of the songs, the guitars seem weirdly unbalanced and not completely musical. Odd.
It was from a Covid era live stream concert, so it's still a bit on the raw side although there was some minor post-processing in the YT upload, but it's pretty much how I remembered it from the live stream performance.

Akane s awesomeness is only surpassed by her excellence..Our Gorilla is at the top of the food chain.
Cheers.

Like many Japanese bands, Miku often uses Kazari Eigo (decoration English).
"Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah!" - Miku Kobato
Every night I have a dream in which Miku screams that at me. ❤🕊
The Band-Maid bluRays often have a few videos that feature everyone on a white stage. One track pans among the five, and there are separate tracks that focus on an individual member.
Yeah, between the Conqueror and Unseen World album's limited edition DVD/Blu-Ray discs you've got 35 of them beautiful white-room videos...priceless.

@@MaartenT Silly me forgetting! Only watched it once through. Seen the black room lots of course on YT since.
@@philproffitt8363
They have done a lot of those, it's easy to forget a couple. And to be fair, I had that list stored somewhere from looking up their instrumentals in the past (and I just removed their audio only ones. I have only watched it once as well, I had to double check before posting that those had multiple camera angels because I wasn't sure.
I guess I imagine a getting sucked in to a black hole would be as much of getting sucked in to a comic book tornado.
as a fellow "non-musician"---I thoroughly am at one with your reaction comment.! yes..."Black Hole " is pure release .!

All of these have different versions with the exception of the From Now On MV, one with all 4 of them and one for each member.
I would love a drum cam view from above as a separate video. I would watch every single one.🤘🏻🔥
Yup!
That is some pretty naughty bass playing going on there. Super impressed!
Hey Andrew, have you heard of the band called Lovebites? They're also a Japanese band and you'll love their song Holy War, and yeah, their drummer, Haruna is a BEAST! Cheers from the Philippines, mate!
Lovebites might be the only other band that has a high enough skill level to play one of the faster, more complex songs. I respect Lovebites.
But I LOVE Band -Maid. ❤🕊❤🌊❤🦍❤🥷❤👸🏻
Not many bands i see live after watching on tv and it not be a let down they was even better live the joy they play with impossible not to have fun
🙌
You should watch their instrumental Without Holding Back. The drums sounded really grear there.
Damn the drums in Manners are so. . Incredibly tasteful!!!!!! Love GorillAkane!!!!!!
YOU are to blame, Andrew !!! Your channel got me hooked on Yoyoka then Band Maid...I have shared this on several other channels... YOU MUST BE STOPPED...You are creating musical addictions that are all consuming...🤤🤯
This makes me so happy Frank!!

hey my kiwi drumming freind😃 how come you've never seen the drummer, Hellhammer play before (not the band hellhammer!)
He is the drummer from MayheM... the pioneers of black metal, and has been in sooo many other norwegian bands as well, including my fav. the Kovenant😊
don't the kids today, like Hellhammer! lol
his beats are insane.
Best female Japanese drummers HARUNA(LOVEBITES), AKANE(BAND-MAID), MORATA TAMU(NEMOPHILA), JUNNA/NAGISA(TRIDENT-JAPAN), SAE(HANABIE), YOYOKA(FREE LANCE)
You are missing
- Senri Kawaguchi: Ranked top 500 drummer on drummerworld when she was 13 and only beaten later by Yoyoka as the youngest drummer on that list.
Suzaku, has solo stuff on youtube and recently played live with Koiai (new name for the old Li-Sa-X band).
I would place both of them higher than the majority (if not all) of that list as far as favourite drummers go (I don't like to use the word "best"). Don't get me wrong, all of them are very good drummers and I like all of them a lot, but Senri has been my favourite Japanese drummer (and one of my favourite drummers period) and Kanade Sato is fantastic as well. It's just because they are more in the Jazz and Fusion realm that you probably never heard of them.
Go check them out, they are well worth it (Andrew has reactions to both of them on his channel).
Akane is very "flam"-able.
Someone bring this man From Now On
Great reaction brother!
MISA MISA MISA!!!!!
Sadly, this is the ONLY time that you will hear or see this intro for Manners, which is by far my favorite version of the song.
Killer intro Bryan!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I know, I wish they would play it as the intro for every show! 😖😖
This is Band-Maid's fastest BPM track to date, I believe, at 220.
A drum cam for Black Hole, please?
I have seen them live four times. I got to meet them as well and the ladies are TINY!! So, yes the bass looks big compared to her. Tiny but mighty.
Hey dude please check out some newer live stuff from Mudvayne since they got back on the road after a long break! His off beat accents and constant variations of his beats through each verse and chorus of each song are super sick.
Mudvayne - Severed & Death Blooms - Drum Cam - Live Pro Audio
It’s normal in Japan to speak a mixture
Right! Thanks for the info
WARNING! (maybe your next song?) It's bad MANNERS to stop listening to Band-Maid because you'll feel starved for musical excellence and joy and fall into a BLACK HOLE of emptiness... probably! 😵 Thx, Andrew!
according to a couple forums misa is 5'7"
Not a big Band Maid fan but this was pretty good stuff.
If you listen real close , you will hear a horn section start at about 5:04, odd for Kanami to use..............
ジミーペイジがアカネの事を褒めてから世界的に有名になったんだよね。
How about some diversity
You have gone down heavy metal road and I hope you continue with bands you have no covered like Pantera and Mudvaine
But would like to see your reaction to Audioslave and Linkin Park
Great call!
I feel the drumming is much more classic/funk/rock/straight ahead in those groups. And therefore underrated!
The only thing that leaves me unsatisfied about B-M lives is that I don't have five sets of eyes on five different feeds focused on each of them. Unfortunately, because each member is pretty much always contributing something awesome and we can't watch all of them at once there's always gonna be the feeling of missing something. And worse yet, Akane suffers from this as much as any drummer, which is to say a lot.
Live footage camera guys almost never manage to feature Akane when she’s doing really cool stuff. Seriously annoying.🙄💪🏻🤘🏻

@@AndrewRooneyDrums hell yeah.. These good band and phenomenal music in the world, don't worry...i suport these your chanell.
I thought he a drummer why he talks about lyrics
I was never a big fan of "girl bands." But lately there have been a few that aren't bad at all.
Aren’t bad..!
Sarcastic comment 🤔🤔🤔not bad 😂😂😂
I like the song, but I have to say (and it's rare these days) that I find the overall mix to be a little jarring. particularly during the first part of the songs, the guitars seem weirdly unbalanced and not completely musical. Odd.
It was from a Covid era live stream concert, so it's still a bit on the raw side although there was some minor post-processing in the YT upload, but it's pretty much how I remembered it from the live stream performance.
