here in a seoul coffee bean cafe drinking americano now for me, watching maestro segovia play in japan 1959 when korea was destitute, is a strange feeling.
Had the privilege as a teenager (pop never appealed) of hearing Segovia perform live in a large concert hall. Having just heard a track of this piece played by the composer Granados on a piano (recorded on a piano roll), and being amazed by its quality and freshness, Segovia brings the piece alive in a strikingly similar way.
You bring back memories of my youth. I treated my best friend to a Segovia performance for her 16th birthday. It was a Pittsburgh Symphony concert on a VERY cold winter night. It must have been 1957, around the time of this recording. I don’t remember the program but do remember he played 5 encores, and my friend and I were enthralled.
@@cruscante I have. Much prefer Granados' own interpretation. Haven't heard anyone coming close to that on piano other than Alicia de Larrocha on piano or Segovia on guitar.
So beautiful - his sound is mesmerising - nobody can sound like him - even if they are technically more adept - he is the true pioneer of the solo guitar - his legacy will endure - long after others have been forgotten - his is the soul of the Iberian peninsular

Gracias.

Very refined personality too.Virtuoso singular !Thanks maestro!Andres Segovia rest in peace !Thanks for sharing !
Segovia siempre he tocado lo mismo. Lo de otros. Tarrega, albeniz….
When I first heard Segovia play this some 40 years ago I was horrified at his broken phrasing of the opening melody. Listening again my opinion is unchanged.
I've always felt the same. Segovia never played Spanish composers as the composers wrote the phrasing. Not even the adagio movement from the "Fantasia para un gentilhombre" survived to his "interpretation" and it's more moderato than adagio and suffocating, it does not breath, like the partiture stipulates. EDIT: This comment before has, wrongly, the concierto named as "Concierto de Aranjuez", which he never played.
@@franzrogar I understood that Segovia refused to ever perform the Aranjuez, because it was dedicated to and premiered by Sainz de La Maza. Such was Segovia's ego. You may be confusing the Concierto with the Fantasia para gentilhombre dedicated to Segovia.

Wonderful sound as always, from Segovia, he was really charismatic. However, the rhythym here is an absolute shambles. It always seemed to me he was making up as he went along. There are so many really fine players nowadays. Many inspired by Segovia, despite his liberal useage of rubato!

Segovia didn't merely play music, he puts himself into his interpretation. I had the extreme pleasure of attending 6 of his performances.

so captivating. Im so glad that people find these historical records and decide to post them.
Compelling, authoritative and beautiful. ❤
I wept when I heard him play this when I was 12 in 19959. He still has the same affect.

Unbelievable that I can watched video from'59 !!
I was one year old in 59. Wish I started playing then.

The art and magic of Segovia and his Hauser.
Beautiful tone of Hauser Ist, 1937. It had been used for 27 years by the maestro.
Segovia led the way...the world is grateful for his dedication.Bream is the greatest player ever followed by John Williams & David Russell.
What about Narciso Yepes or Paco de Lucia
A csodagitáros. Előadás, technika, vibrátó, portamentó, dinamika. Ő az etalon!!! ( Nem rock gitáros peszergés, beképzeltség, bohóckodás!!!)
The details changed a lot over the years.
Guitar completely changes the texture and mood of this song, very interesting performance
Not everyone can tune a guitar string in the middle of a song without missing a beat, but Segovia can.
