  • One of the hardest things about raising a puppy is their constant biting, whether that is when taking treats during training or when they are just excited.
    In this video I address a simple technique that can help your puppy learn to stop biting at your hands. We address it with Mellow our young Yellow Labrador puppy who is training with him mom Ellen. You'll see how quickly and simply Mellow learns this lesson. it's important to remember that puppies are not biting, they just don't have much "bite inhibition."

    That reminds me of my lab when he was a pup. The insane tailwagging over 1 treat :')

    i was taught and also found that making dog crying noises (like a staffy cry) when they nip you, teaches them to be more gentle as well. they pick it up pretty quickly.

      I wouldn’t advise this at all..the reason they make squeaky toys is to engage prey drive, any time you squeak like prey, my guy (German shepherd) just bites harder. I’ve heard many trainers online say this is an old wives’ tale. Instead, a loud, firm, low sound to startle would be better..stuffing a substitute toy or antler in front of their teeth, avoiding putting your hand in those circumstances where they bite, believe me, I’ve tried everything. I tried the more forceful grabbing by the scruff and pinning on the ground..zero effect, and starts a negative relationship. Saw a great one online yesterday about how discouraging (totally) the biting in puppies is wrong anyway, this is how they learn bite inhibition. If I can find it, I’ll add a reply..

      Simpawtico training..has a great explanation of both biting and getting “acquired bite inhibition,”..

      @@johncspine2787 well it workrd for me. They immediately disengaged and licked instead. Although I started at 8 weeks. So maybe age makes a difference.

      I tried everything at that age, I got mine a couple days before he was 8 weeks, his teeth were (are) so savagely sharp, even a graze drew blood. I’ve found lots better results by not pulling my hand out of his mouth, counterintuitively, and he seems to be going easier. The Simpawtico video is quite good…@@redmoose1447

      @@johncspine2787 ill have a look at the video. I will point out that I didnt pull my hand away. As soon as I'd make a cry noise, the dog would pull away itself or just switch to licking instead.

    I would like to know where to get the 2.5 prong collar in the size of a 20 inch. I’ve tried to order and they only come in 16 inches and to add prongs to it it’s $20 for three prongs. Does anyone sell them in the 2.5 in longer sizes. Thanks for all the help. I have learned a lot from watching your videos. I appreciate you and your dogs. I have a seven month old Belgian melon Wah name doc

    Many people teach their dog to bite by pulling away. The dog thinks it's a game to get it and bites you in the process. I have friends that do that with my dog as she's really big. I have them place the treat on top of their hand instead. The nervousness of having a 230lb Mastiff with BIG teeth goes away.

    Great vid at right time..my GSD is 11-12 weeks, still just very bitey..I’m sure I’ve made it worse. I’d like to pet, but he turns his head to bite no matter what, however, it’s getting much better, and there are times he now accepts a belly rub, or behind the ear scratches, or the magic throat spot rub without biting. I’m trying not to exacerbate it, but it’s hard not to react negatively when the pup “bites the hand that feeds it.” His teeth are so sharp, he draws blood.

      Try petting him when he comes to you vs. Coming into his space. Watch videos on appeasing behavior (it can easily be confused with happy dog behavior). Many people fling their hands around like Robert showed at the beginning, that encourages bitting and jumping. I always say "move the dog, not your hands." Try and match the percentage of energy (just like Robert said at the end "don't make it a fight"). Many people have a dog who they are trying to calm down, and the dog comes at them with 25% energy and the person reacts with 110% energy back. This does not de-escalate, many times with puppies it is frustrating (like Robert said) or turns it into a fun game. You want to avoid creating a positive feedback loop when trying to get a calmer, more relaxed dog. Good luck. GSDs are the best!!

      I guess I’m guilty of the human ego in wanting what I want when I want it. I’m scared my GSD won’t be affectionate at all so I’m overcompensating by trying to force it. I’ll just keep going to my training sessions, training at home, walking him over to the local PetSmart and vet’s office across the street, taking car trips, and I’ll take the love I get as it comes and not worry about it. The trainer asked if I had considered bite work, and I said “I’ll do whatever it takes to promote a healthy, happy and fulfilled dog’s life for him, if that means obedience training, agility, scent work, or even bite work, so be it.” If he turns out to have a personality better suited to a professional K9 type life, I’d consider giving him up so he could be happy. Or happier doing that. I don’t think he’s got the drive for that, being more towards show line, but he’s got Russian and Argentinian heritage, maybe he will.@@Crystal-and-Dexter

      When I went through all this teething stage with my G.S.D, just kept switching him on to different chew toys
      and after a couple of months it just disappeared virtually over night...
      just gotta ride the storm.

    • @johncspine2787
      @johncspine2787 9 місяців тому

      Yes, getting microscopically better, antlers seem to be his best option for chew toys. Was super proud of him yesterday at training, the trainer put an open top, solid sided black box down and had me put some of his food in, then he went around the box slowly closing the distance making distracting sounds with a couple items..my guy couldn’t care less about the loud sounds. Then, he teased him with the leather bite rag, he was super engaged. Might or might not do bite work, but it’s fun to see a trainer get excited too about your dog..@@DeanSmith3935
