I had a meniscus repair 7 months ago. I’ve been in pain ever since. Every follow up with the doctor even after expressing my discomfort & pain was the same. He would bend my knee and say it seemed fine. Not only having swelling & pain but below the knee stays to swollen twice the size of my other leg.
Hi! I have been binge watching your videos... so informative! Do wish I had seen this info 6 months ago! OK, So I ended up having meniscus surgery, where they trimmed it. I have early stage arthritis as well. I ended up with surgery due to painful locking, repeatedly swelling and loss of motion over a period of 3 months. At first the surgery was really successful! 2.5 months in, no pain and doing well. Then started single leg dead lifts on physio advice, which in hindsight was too difficult. Also lots of quad engagement! At about 11 weeks in I had a relapse with swelling. Periodic improvements, then more relapses. Ugh. 5 months in. Today I have just had 45ml of fluid drained! They said the medial meniscus that was left, has shifted to the side, and no longer between the bone. A cortisone injection for pain relief as an interim measure. I am hoping like anything that I have not created more damage by not seeing the surgeon again earlier. Its tough though as I'm in a foreign country with language barrier. Not much follow up care, and physio not as proactive as I thought. I am absolutely certain I can get things back on track. Hard to find a physio on board with your ideas of no quads! I totally see now how it forced the knee joint together. So now I will continue your leg swing, rest it. Use a walking stick. I know I'm oversharing! Not looking for diagnosis of course! but more or less venting frustration! I did make the best decision with the info I had though! I am considering your 28 day program of knee rehab. Do you think this program will be good to start with, once I get everything settled? I don't think it will be too bad an idea. Of course could clear with surgeon too. Thanks so much for all your info! You are awesome!
Please talk about Ice and then infrared therapy. This has helped me a lot and could be good for others. Love your videos ,thanks for posting and helping so many of us.
Hey Joseph, thank you for the kind words and the recommendations! We are looking to cover these things eventually, but we have a very long list of things to get to!
I have a lot of popping happening post 6 weeks post-surgery. It doesn't hurt but whenever I bend the knee and extend there definitely is a pop that I can feel.
I am almost 12 months post surgery for a bucket handle tear with flap. I work in a hospital so I am on my feet for 12 hours per day. Because this happened at work I am on work cover and i can't return to full hours until it is properly healed. I have been rehabbing since the match surgery and by October was doing all my excersices and doing ten flights of stairs twice a day without pain. So, went back to work for one 8 hour shift to start with and after that shift have had bad under the kneecap pain when walking steep inclines or stairs. It's been like that for four weeks and even after resting it and de loading it for a week. I'm really hoping it osnt damaged further. Feeling very frustrated.
I tore my medial meniscus and had a partial meniscectomy on 08/09…they removed 70%. I am an RN & returned to work 3 weeks following surgery. I am on my feet for 11-12 hours straight. I am now having excruciating pain and excessive swelling not only on my knee but to the outside and up into my thigh. It is worse than before the surgery. I’m not sure what is going on. At my follow-up 9 days after surgery, the surgeon said, “I guess we will write this one up as a failure” because I was still having some pain and mild swelling. I’m worried and frustrated. Not sure what to do.
That is terrible. You needed more time off work. I am sorry you are going through that. Guessing you might need another job in healthcare that doesn't involve being on feet.
8 months after surgery and it's been nothing but hell. Worst mistake i've ever made getting this . Still have tons of noises and pops coming from my knee just like i did from day 1 after surgery . Had no idea that was one of side effects after this surgery. I had lateral and medial tear surgery. Numerous docs told me MRI looks good but they only suggest gel shots or PRP. In the middle of gel shots right now and they're aren't helping . Also some pain on outer edge of knee and continued discomfort. I may have to travel around the world now to fix this . Incredibly sad .
@@annisaal-habsyi I'm the same . Went to a doc in NYC and he thinks it may be popliteal tendon. I did a cortisone injection in that tendon and it only felt good for like 18 hours . On my next appointment i thought he was going to want to to surgery . It turns out he doesn't at this time. However my original doc that i got surgery with wants to open me up again. Horrible situation . Not sure what to do. It seems like a gamble either way . i was much better before surgery without all these issues .
@@vickhones9961 thank you so much for replying. I fell from stairs and I tore my meniscus 2 months ago and I only can bend my knee 20 degree and walk with a walker. can you please tell me the story why you had to get meniscus surgery? is it because you cannot bend your knee at all?
Same! I’m 2.5 years out from mine and I live in chronic pain every day. I’ve gotten cortisone shots and they helped for one day. Got a second mri that showed another tear at the patellar tendon. Doctors said it won’t heal and no surgery. I feel helpless
Sorry to heard this but I had 4 surgeries already and I’m still dealing with this pain and locking it’s horrible it’s the worse decision I ever made in life hope you guys have better luck than me
Thanks for this video. I didn’t have meniscus surgery however I had microfracture surgery for a full thickness cartilage defect on my femur 4 months ago. I am highly suspicious it’s failed. I have intense pain and knee locking 4-5 times a day. It’s awful. Thankfully I see my surgeon in a week and trying to prepare myself for what may happen.
Hi Kelsea, you're welcome! We're really sorry to hear about your tough experience with the microfracture surgery. Dealing with intense pain and knee locking is no joke. It's good you've got that appointment with your surgeon coming up. They'll be able to give you the best advice on what's going on and what to do next. Hang in there, and remember you've got a whole community here rooting for you. Keep us posted on how it goes with your surgeon!
I had two bucket handle tears and saucerization of a discoid meniscus 2 months ago. I am 75 . I am having physiotherapy at the moment but get pain in the calf and at the back of the knee. I started therapy 4 weeks ago.

What do you know about Genicular artery embolization (GAE), or embolization of the knee, is a novel minimally-invasive procedure providing immediate and long term pain relief for patients with osteoarthritis (OA), by reducing the blood flow to the lining of the knee, known as the synovium.
I had acl reconstruction using my patellar tendon, and I had my lateral and medial meniscus repaired. I’m 4 weeks post op and when I walk with crutches sometimes the front of my knee pops. Other than that it’s been good
I am currently in week 4 of rehab after meniscus repair. I am not allowed to flex my knee above 60 degrees. I still flexed it regularily above the 60 degree mark. I got to 120 degrees painfree and without my muscles interfering and stretched my knee back out in a pumping motion. After a few repetitions (assisted with my hand) a sudden pain manifested and blocked the way "up" into stretching. I was lying on my back with my leg flexed. I went through the pain and flexed my leg back into 0 degree with assistance of my hand. My knee feels unstable ever since and sometimes hurts even in a fully stretched position when lieing. It's not hurting much but I am certain it is warmer than before. Might I have ruptured my meniscus again?
Can you get a meniscus tear from falling forward hard on knees on concrete? I think it is mostly swelling under knee caps. Happened a month ago. One knee is still inflamed, even when taking analgesics. Can't get an MRI in NZ. Feels like something is stuck behind knee cap. McConnell taping helps with movement as trouble bending on walking. Thanks for the great advice on exercises, swinging knees from a high chair many times a day and doing the but crunches.
@@ric8167 I'm in NZ and can't get a referal for MRI. Will have to buy myself braces to prevent further twists as there is definitely one in right knee as it is clicking and catching under the knee. I am hoping it is just a ligament doing that but that is wishful thinking
@@louisejoel that's weird to me that you have any trouble getting a MRI, considering I'm from Brazil, which is a thousand times poorer than NZ, and had no problems doing mine, which confirmed a medial meniscus tear. Doctors recommend surgery, which is not surprising, but am trying to skip the knife and focus on physical therapy for now. I wish you luck, hopefully you don't need surgery either, though if it's ruptured ligaments then i don't think PT would suffice.
@@ric8167 NZ is probably the most expensive country to get an MRI scan. For the cost of one knee in NZ you can get a whole body MRI and more in China. I hope you can avoid surgery for a while and see if there is some improvement.
Hi doctors. I’ve been following your videos online , excellent , thank you . I had surgery two and a half months ago. The doctor perform a meninsectomy on my right knee, and did some chondroplasty of the patella. I went back to work 7 week after surgery , and it seems like pain got worst . I’ve been in pain on and off ever since the surgery . I’m doing physical theraphy and the doctor put me out of work again for 2 more months . He didn’t want to send me to get a new MRI, said it was too soon and would probabaly be inconclusive . I’m Very frustrated with my knee. Pain sometimes feels worst than before the surgery. I’m 42 years old ,,he said my age and arthritis I had In knee may be making recovery slower. I need your advice . Im doing your glut exercises to go along with my physical theraphy , see if that helps. Any idea what Night be my situation ,,re tear, or just slow recovery. Any advice ? Thnsks for your videos , I might subscribe to your online stuff , since I live in California .
HI its been 3 months after my surgery , my meniscus and ACL was torn. now i have occasional locking mostly when i do squats or when i get out of the bed
Hi Neha, We're so sorry to hear that you are still having issues with your knee 3 months after your surgery. 🥺Unfortunately, that is not uncommon for us to hear as surgery doesn't address the root cause which is a muscle imbalance stemming from the glutes. We do have a knee meniscus surgery help playlist you might find helpful for your situation. You can access it here: “Knee Meniscus Surgery Help” ua-cam.com/play/PLJVIPiFvv1maIj5ge4oSQTqVs3RzwpqwV.html Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Always avoid working through pain; soreness and mild discomfort are normal, but pain is not. If you find the the playlist was helpful for your situation you may want to consider looking into our Knee Meniscus Recovery program. The program is similar to our in-person treatments minus the manual manipulation and it can help those who have already had surgery on their meniscus. The Knee Meniscus Recovery Program is designed to help people have the best chance of avoiding unnecessary surgery, injections, or having to rely on pain medications. This course guides people through exercises and stretches that target key body parts that have the greatest potential to prevent or help with meniscus tears or trouble after meniscus surgery. Hi ! I had knee meniscus surgery some 20 years ago. After surgery, as i was busy in project work in my college, i didnt give the importance of post operation i.e physiotherapy. Due to this negligence, my knee loss the range of motion in both flexion and extension. So, is there any possibility to gain my knee full range of motion. I am still active in playing futsal (passion/addiction) with my age category, not competitive or tournament kind of a thing. Any kind of advice is highly appreciated. Thank you.
hi doc, so i got into arthroscopy surgery for my meniscus on may, everything is ok, it’s just a bit painful if i walk too long. my knee clicking all the time, every time I bend my leg and straight my leg it’s clicking (but it doesn’t hurt) it’s still kind of hard when i go upstair & downstair (a bit of pain but isn’t that painful) especially when I go downstair, i sometimes need to “pop” the knee because it’s too stiff (ever since i got into surgery, i kind of avoid every activity that require me to use stairs, which maybe why it is stiff) so the conclusion & question: - is it ok for it to be clicking every time i bend & straight my post-op leg? no pain, only clicking (not a loud sound, but definitely there’s a friction) - is it ok to feel stiff? - i have tried to do mini squats (i do it constantly so i can get used to it once i can do full squat), it’s stiff & a bit pain but not disturbing, is it ok? 4 months post op meniscus
Hey there, sorry to hear you had a meniscus surgery and are still dealing with these issues. The popping sound could be many things unfortunately and it is difficult to say without an evaluation. The stiffness is very common after the surgery due to the decreased motion and use of the joint. The mini squats are great, as long as you are not causing an increase in pain. Once the pain begins to increase, you should take a break. In case you are interested, we have created a very structured program to help people recover from knee meniscus injuries. Had a surgery for meniscus around 4-5 months ago my last visit with my surgeon / doctor I told him about the constant non stop crunching and popping sounds it’s so annoying but I don’t feel any pain. Just a little bit of pressure. He said it’s normal but my knee cracks non stop even for the smallest movement pls help .
It has been four weeks and when I walk I feel some pulling or pain in that knee joint line, but I want to think it's because there's still some swelling, since the spots where I had the incisions are still swollen, so I guess inside must be even more swollen due to the disturbance. I'll wait for the 8 weeks and see if the limitation continues.

Hi doctor. I had arthroscopic miniscus surgery on my right knee about 4 and a half weeks ago. I’m still sore on the actual knee cap part. The main worry I have is that I have on and off pain next to my knee cap , on the inside part of my knee , right next to one of the incisions the doctor made before the surgery . Doctor told me it’s normal to have pain for the first 2 months , is that true? I don’t have any swelling , or pain where you said the miniscus is , underneath the knee cap. Can it just be irritation? I’ll wait for your answer doctor , thank you .
@@nessa90 Well,7 months after my surgery I can say I’m better now. I’m never going to be 100% again, in sort casue of my age , I’m 42, and because I probably waited too long to be the surgery after my initial injury. But after long theraphy sessions, and being off my feet for a couple months off work , my knee has gotten stronger and less painful. I still have days when I will make a sudden movement and my knee will hurt a little ,,sometimes be sore the next day. I can’t even run again, which sucks, since I use to be a distance runner , but my day to day activities are pretty normal now. My advice is to get the problem fix as soon as it happens . Don’t let the injury get worst. The worst the injury gets, and the older we get , the less likely you will recover close to 100%. But I am much better, patience in very important after surgery. Now everyone recovers fast, we all have different time frames to recover 👍🏻

Yes, it will go away with time. I felt like you , even three months after the surgery. I was really frustrated ,and no matter what I did the pain was there every day, at all times. I taught the pain was never going to go away. But with my physical therapy ,,doing the exercises twice a day, and also getting some rest , little by little the pain started to decrease . Hi, I recently had a meniscus repair and tibial subchondroplasty surgery both at the same time. I was told recovery would be 6-8 weeks and I am on my 7th week now but the vertical middle section of my knee pains a lot when I try to bend my knee when it is lifted in the air (also note that I have little cartilage left and my knee clocks everytime I try to bed it). Also the incision where they inserted the cement hurts a lot when I try to walk upright without the crutch or walker. Is this normal and what is the normal recovery time for both surgery?

Hi there. Im 10 days post op for a lateral bucket handle tear ( im 42 yrs old). I have a brace on and crutches. I was told to be partially weight bearing for 4 weeks on crutches, and 6 weeks with brace . I had an incident where accidentally put fully weight on my operated leg. I had a sudden sharp pain for a second and immediately held onto something and took weight off my leg. Could i have re-repured the repaired meniscus? I dont feel pain now but its a bit sore ( could be plecibo)..... im very worried!
Hey there, sounds like a rough couple of weeks! :( This may have ruptured the repair, but it is impossible to tell without an examination. If you are not having pain with partial weight bearing, then you may not have ruptured the repair. Best advice would be to continue to follow the guidelines as best you can. You may want to discuss this with your doctor to determine more definitively whether the repair has ruptured. Hope this helps!

Having the same issues with pain and swelling two years after surgery.
You are awesome!
hey... how are you now?
Please talk about Ice and then infrared therapy. This has helped me a lot and could be good for others. Love your videos ,thanks for posting and helping so many of us.
Hey Joseph, thank you for the kind words and the recommendations! We are looking to cover these things eventually, but we have a very long list of things to get to!
Don't know what I'd do without the ice ! 😅
I have a lot of popping happening post 6 weeks post-surgery. It doesn't hurt but whenever I bend the knee and extend there definitely is a pop that I can feel.
it’s scar tissue just keep exercising it will get less and less
@@SethMilnerr thank you, you were actually correct!
3weeks?! Should be 3-6mths!
And 11-12hr straight away is crazy.
How you doing now ?
8 months after surgery and it's been nothing but hell. Worst mistake i've ever made getting this . Still have tons of noises and pops coming from my knee just like i did from day 1 after surgery . Had no idea that was one of side effects after this surgery. I had lateral and medial tear surgery. Numerous docs told me MRI looks good but they only suggest gel shots or PRP. In the middle of gel shots right now and they're aren't helping . Also some pain on outer edge of knee and continued discomfort. I may have to travel around the world now to fix this . Incredibly sad .
how are you now?

Hey Tom, thank you for the kind words!
I had two bucket handle tears and saucerization of a discoid meniscus 2 months ago. I am 75 . I am having physiotherapy at the moment but get pain in the calf and at the back of the knee. I started therapy 4 weeks ago.
Have they checked for a blood clot?
Is there a way to tell if there's enough knee instability that will eventually result in worn-out meniscus?

It's real easy to tear your meniscus, specially after certain age. You'll need a mri for a diagnostic.
Very frustrated with my knee. Pain sometimes feels worst than before the surgery. I’m 42 years old ,,he said my age and arthritis I had In knee may be making recovery slower. I need your advice . Im doing your glut exercises to go along with my physical theraphy , see if that helps. Any idea what

You can access it here:
“Knee Meniscus Surgery Help”
ua-cam.com/play/PLJVIPiFvv1maIj5ge4oSQTqVs3RzwpqwV.html
Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity.
My leg was swollen approximately 3 times its size and black purple. I still cannot bend it fully and any Dr that sees it. Asks me who performed you knee surgery. The PA and Dr took the blame. Because of this faulty procedure I had to apply for financial assistance due to not being able to walk, etc. Now my right knee is neeeding attention. Ugh. But I will not succom to surgery. I always have small fluid on the right side of my knee after i played basketball but no pain. Is it failed too?
Thank you.
hi doc, so i got into arthroscopy surgery for my meniscus on may, everything is ok, it’s just a bit painful if i walk too long. my knee clicking all the time, every time I bend my leg and straight my leg it’s clicking (but it doesn’t hurt)
it’s still kind of hard when i go upstair & downstair (a bit of pain but isn’t that painful) especially when I go downstair, i sometimes need to “pop” the knee because it’s too stiff (ever since i got into surgery, i kind of avoid every activity that require me to use stairs, which maybe why it is stiff)
so the conclusion & question:
- is it ok for it to be clicking every time i bend & straight my post-op leg? no pain, only clicking (not a loud sound, but definitely there’s a friction)
- is it ok to feel stiff?
I'm sorry to hear. How are you doing now?
It has been four weeks and when I walk I feel some pulling or pain in that knee joint line, but I want to think it's because there's still some swelling, since the spots where I had the incisions are still swollen, so I guess inside must be even more swollen due to the disturbance.
Did the pain ever go away?

Well,7 months after my surgery I can say I’m better now.

Doctors make it seem like in a mont or 2 you will be good to go, that’s why we get our hopes up and feel really frustrated when we don’t get better in that time frame . Hi, I recently had a meniscus repair and tibial subchondroplasty surgery both at the same time.

My surgeon said the repair stitches are very strong so would be unlikely to break with one minor misstep
@@beefybeef1326how are you doing now??I also had the same surgery..and I'm afraid I might have accidentally put weight when not supposed to..was told not to bear any weight for 6 weeks..accidentally stepped on operated leg..how is one supposed to know if stitches out off the meniscus re-ruptured??I'm afraid to even attempt to walk
I had a ACL avulsion tibia plateau shattered and a small meniscus tear (which my surgeon said was too small necessary to repair) I’m now 10 months post op and it clicks and pops every time I extend almost like a quad crack all the time (no pain) just uncomfortable I’m wondering if this is normal because everyone I know that’s had ACL surgery says the clicking and popping never goes away?
Just a little over two months after meniscus repair. Does mild discomfort and aching usually stick around for several months during recovery and PT? What are your recommendations on incline walking?
Hi Christian, We are so sorry to hear that you have struggling with discomfort for 2 months after meniscus surgery.🥺 Since everyone's body heals differently it's not easy to determine the length of time of when the discomfort will subside. It also depends on how severe the issue was and it also depends on the knowledge of the PT. We have a playlist that we have compiled in a playlist for walking & stairs advice that can assist you in walking on an incline. You would use the same techniques. You can check it out here: “Walking & Stairs Advice For Painful Knees, Hips, And Ankles”

Hi Dr David, I just sent you an email on your website about meniscus surgery, chondromalacia patella, and your 28 day program. Thanks!
Hi, i had medial meniscus repair with four UHMWPE sutures two weeks ago. I'm on a brace. But while sleeping, i am having hypnic jerks which is making my legs to have sudden involuntary movements. My knee in brace is trying to bend while having these jerks. However, the movement is restricted as it is in a brace. But at the time of the jerk i'm having a sudden pain which goes away in a minute. Last night, i had a sudden jerk and i heard a clicking/popping sound and sudden pain for a minute. Is there a possibilty that the sutures would have failed?
I had that too
@@samliftsheavyweight How is your leg now?
I have this popping sound frequently 😐
