I've known of David Gerard since 2015 or so, and he was way ahead of the curve on what was wrong with cryptocurrency. I was aware he was writing the book, but I had no opinion on cryptocurrency at the time. Clearly he was on the right track. I'm glad his book has been well-received.
One of your best episodes. Hearing David speak is always enlightening. He makes it really easy to understand how stupid all of this is. 33:00 "they perceive that governance should be done through cryptocurrency". This is such a prominent idea in the space and I fucking hate it. Democracy means every person gets one vote. In crypto, you can chose between proof-of-stake - voting power based on how much money you own - and proof-of-work - voting power based on paying the most money for mining equipment. Both are just plutocratic systems that we as a society should reject forcefully and decisively. This is fine in private companies, but not on a societal level. Every democratically elected government should defend itself against these attempts to steal its power.
Totally love your podcast and I've watched a lot of them. Is there any way for you to bring Bennett's volume up? Every time I watch you two I do a little dance between making Bennett audible without Cas burying me :). The content is well worth it, but it seems to be a common issue with the show for me.
Is it really that hard to differentiate between cryptocurrency and the people who use it to scam people. Maddox used dollars. It's good to be skeptical but please be fair.
Anarcho-Capitalism is an oxymoron, Anarchism, is democracy without elected representatives, which is only possible by removing all hierarchic systems of control e.g. Money Tokens. A resource based Anarchist society is one where the limit on what can be achieved is only the amount of total resources (materials+energy) available, to the society. The goal of such a system, is equal division of "product" based on need, not ability to contribute, indeed in such a system "A Robot took my Job" is a boon, because your needs are still met. Ultimate goal of the system, is core needs met by automation, freeing people to choose if, and how to contribute more to the resource pool. Anarchism is the exact opposite of capitalism.
This doesn't show that anarcho-capitalism is an oxymoron. Anarcho-capitalists would obviously deny that money's existence guarantees a hierarchic system of control, so your argument is question-begging. There are a lot of devastating criticisms of anarcho-capitalism, but these require substantive argument, not an attempt at an a priori gotcha argument.
