Replacing the High Limit Sensor in a Heater that won't stay on. Common, Cheap, Simple Repair!

  • From my research one of the most common failures on the more economical garage heaters that you buy from home improvement stores (such as BigMAXX and Mr Heater) is the High Limit switch/sensor. This temperature sensor automatically cuts off the heater when the temp in the cabin gets above a certain point and is supposed to turn it back on when things cool down.
    It's a $4 part. But in winter, in my area, a repair call to somebody coming out to look at this would run you almost the price of the furnace originally. So.. save yourself some hassle and check these things first.. cause if this is your problem the fix is very cheap and easy.

    Thank you for making this video. I do all my own work, with everything we have here at our house, if I can. I love videos like this. I did exactly what you said, and my heater started working. When I turned the power on, only the fan would run. I tapped on the part you mentioned and reinstalled. Heater is now working, and I'll order the replacement part. Thanks again, great job explaining it!

    Thank you, DIY Dad! I have the exact same heater in a commercial greenhouse. Same error code, control board LED flashing 4 times. Heater would turn the fan on high without prompt from the thermostat but not ignite. I just replaced the control board, high limit sensor and pressure switch … but one of those pesky little roll out sensors had tripped. After checking both of them and depressing the hidden reset button (thanks for the tip!) it’s working great again and keeping the tree ferns warm.

    Thanks for the good advice I was able to flick the sensor like you said and the furnace kicked back on! Now I will order the new one immediately!

    I reset the rollout sensors and started the unit and saw the flames rolling out and the sensors tripped within a minute. I then blew out the screens at the gas jet outlets and reset the sensors again and seems to be fixed, been running for over an hour with no rollout. So thanks again for showing where the resets are on the rollout sensors.

    Thanks. I have the four blinks so will check the sensors. Unfortunately it's black around the heat tubes suggests some rollout. The heater is less than a year old

      Best of luck! Insulated the walls of my garage this last summer which has resulted in my heater running far less and haven’t had to touch it since that video (the original sensor lasted only about 2 months)
      Given how cold it has been this winter I would check your heater’s exhaust path for icing or snow buildup - either could cause some roll back.

      Where did you purchase the sensor?

      @@philhanson7624 Honestly I don't recall - I pulled the sensor and read the part number off of it, then did a google search for that part number. I am pretty sure I got the replacement from Amazon or Supplyhouse.com

    Is there temperature sensors that will also fail on the electric model

    • @AskDIYDad
      @AskDIYDad  5 місяців тому

      I’m not sure.. but it would stand to reason that there would be a failure limit sensor to avoid a heating element melting or damaging itself in an over-volt situation

    I’m getting 2 flashes for system failure. I’m not finding anything online that tells me how to fix this.

      What model number of furnace?

    • @lefixmeow
      @lefixmeow 2 місяці тому

      If it’s a Mr. Heater Big Maxx 80,000 btu furnace, the manyal says:
      2 flashes: System Lockout - failure to detect or sustain flame. Current signal at FLAME terminal less than 6 micro amps.
      If your heater is trying to ignite but won’t stay on, it’s probably a flame sensor or the control board. When my heater gave me this code I replaced the control board with a kit I got on ebay and it worked fine again even after sitting for 3 years. Hope that helps!
