Hey Chip--Thanks a lot for taking the time to share and talk though your team's decisions via this Vlog!. I especially appreciate your demo near the end of your video showing the comparative benefits of Strava. Very interesting to see ARMD's great decisions & execution. They ran a great race (as did you, Andrea & Brent)! See you in the woods!
Thanks Barry. Your Mike recorded a track for each leg so you can see how you guys did but you have to select all of them. I think it does that if the watch is in multi sport mode and used to track transition times.
This is Tom Loomis from Chasing Demons Adventure Racing and just wanted to say I love your videos, this one in particular. this video has helped me in the process of learning from your mistakes. thank you
Our pleasure. If you are interested, we just produced a S#!t ton of content for the Huairasinchi 4 day Adventure Race in Ecuador that we just completed last month. It has tons of training in there. We specifically made this playlist to help racers and teams learn how to complete an expedition length race. Happy to answer any questions you have. @@ChipDodd I can't figure out how to direct message here, but....do you have any connections with the Tahoe Big Blue Adventure Challenge? I'm trying to get some prep for it and cannot find much information online.
@@aaronatkins6677 bigblueadventure.com/tahoe-big-blue-adventure-race/ Nope, I (Chip) don't have a connection with them since we are in Virginia. Looks like a fun race though. They are USARA sanctioned so the rules and format is pretty standard. It sounds like a "rogaine" format where you get to pick the CPs you wanna go for and skip the ones that appear too hard to achieve in the 8 hours. Anything else specific I can help you with?
Hey, just curious what you use to track your race? I'm new and gonna do my first AR next month, so im alittle unfamiliar with exact rules on what your aloud to have on you. I have a garmin instinct I typically use to track runs but I thought it's not aloud in AR because of the GPS features.
Hi Bradley. Most race directors allow Garmin watches to be used in AR Mode which disables the GPS capabilities that can be used for navigation while leaving enabled the GPS tracking for post-race analysis. If you don't have an AR-enabled Garmin watch, you will need to use a not GPS watch on your wrist and bag up your GPS-enabled watch in your backpack and refrain from using it.
In typical adventure races, the CPs may be obtained in any order. This is usually called "Rogaine". This allows the race director to be creative in their course design and offer teams many puzzles to solve. For example, if you attack clockwise, there may be easier attack points, guardrails or back stops that are better than counter clockwise. Also, if they are in order, mid to back pack teams can easily find the points because the ground will be scuffed up by the top teams. I much prefer rogaine vs. linear courses. Orienteering events usually require points to be obtained in order and you will have a huge advantage if you start towards the end of the day and follow the "goat trails". Of course, sometimes these goat trails are not right so stay on top of the compass and terrain association.
@@ThisABILITYRacing thanks alot for your reply. I'm just getting into adventure racing and have only entered one 6hr race I've got a 24hr one in august and I'm not sure how its set out yet. Cheers

@@ChipDodd Chip, I had my watch in my backpack so didn't record any transitions. I split up the track afterwards.
@@MichaelDickey1 Gotcha, that makes sense. I have no clue how to do that:/
