hi Corporal Kelly well I was the one that suggested you to do a video on how to use a compass you said you stayed clear of this yes I know there are other channel's doing this but here's why I asked you to do this one people may not see the other channel's and this is a inportant matter and I like how you teach you don't make thing complicate no big o shits you keep it simple and strate forward easy to under stand please don't stear clear of thing because you and you'r channel do make a different in people life after all what is you'r channel about in the first place helping so one injoy the out doors and most of all helping people that got in a fix survive an out doors situation so no don't stsy clear of thing's you're teaching just might save some one's life out in the Forrest etc. isn't a joke when something go's from bad to worst all this is why I asked you to do this forget the other channel because you've heared time again from us you do make a different ok I SALUTE you Corporal Shawn Kelly C😎😎L
appreciate all the knowledge you share. I'm pretty new to all of your channel. you give very clear instrustction and how to with everything you post that's hard to find. thank you
Honestly, the market may be saturated, but that's where brand loyalty comes in. I'd rather learn from you, a known, trusted source, than try to find someone else with the depth of knowledge and clear explanation.
I like how you explain things as if the entire audience was an 18 year old with a fresh buzzcut. "How to do it without f'ing it up." Outstanding. I subscribed.
I remember being in SOI learning the 240G and Sgt Kelly (no relation I don't think) looking out at our platoon and saying "now remember gents, feed from the left, brass to the grass, and...." (here he had the funniest look of disappointment, knowing he was answering someone's honest question) ".....pointy end downrange." lmfao
don't compare yourself to others, you're no nonsense approach makes you a go to GUY, you don't waste time and when you're finished THE TOPIC ... As you always say; "WE ARE GOOD TO GO". Always appreciate your wealth of knowledge...THANKS
Corporal...just a bit of feedback for you: Your teaching is precise, very clear, and very informative...and in a manner that can make a very novice beginner or even a hardened pro understand and pick up on easily and quickly. Your manner of teaching also makes it VERY easy to retain and apply. Keep up the GREAT work....And yes, by all means, keep these tutorial videos coming...they are second to none. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with others, especially those who have a difficult time grasping from other attempted teachings. YOU definitely have a professional way and skill to clearing up sometimes otherwise confusing instructions. SEMPER FI !!!
I heartily agree. I was in the Marines; and I love the very straight, simple and to the point way that you lay things out... with just enough back story and insider insights to make it really interesting, and fun to watch! I watch other channels; but often the camerawork isn't that good, or they haven't really researched what they are talking about. The fact that you were in the Marines and have them as a resource is MAJOR, in my opinion.
Agreed. In that aspect it reminds me of when I took my course to become an EMT-B. Our instructor was very clear on what we needed to know vs. what they "had" to teach by NYS law and so that we could give the answers that were looked for on the State tests. That distinction allowed us to know what we needed for the field and for practical use as opposed to what was fluff and extraneous info that someone else said we "had" to know. When I have passed on my knowledge to others (part of the now, sadly, defunct EMT Oath) I have tried to use the same 'This is what you do and this is why' format. PLEASE keep up the great work!
I really like how clear speaking and concise you are in your videos. You speak as plainly as you need to without fancying anything. I really appreciate your videos sir.
I used to be great at this... when I was a boy scout in the early 80's. This video was a great refresher and it's time to brush off the rust and practice once again. Thanks!
You talk about subscribers and if it's worth the trouble for making a video. I don't care if someonehad more subscribers than you; I go with who I feel I can trust. I trust your knowledge and simple instruction. Number of subscribers doesn't always mean everything.
As ex British army I like your style of instruction and it is the same as mine when I teach a practical subject. I’ve always kept with the explanation, demonstration, and imitation method and never fails to get the information over. Carry on good sir, carry on. Swampy.
Old method of teaching always the best , mag to grid get rid and never let the ruppert map read . Silva or prismatic, silva all the info you require unless you want arty or drop shorts putting fire down then prismatic.
WoW that intro brings me back to being in a class room listening to my corporal give a navigation lesson for anyone who hasn't served this is the closest thing you will get to a real lecture outside of the military
My first taste of land nav was in 1965 at Camp Lejeune, NC. Did NOT learn it then as they were pushing people to Nam. I was totally lost in the woods. If I had you as an instructor back then with the ol lensatic compass I'd been much further ahead. Now a retired Marine MSgt I look back on those times and glad to be alive. Keep it up, Marine. You're doing a fine job.
What a beautiful thing to watch a guy who clearly knows EXACTLY what he is doing explain, succinctly and clearly, No wasted motion here - just excellent teaching all the way. Thanks for teaching and reminding this old "Coastie" the basics of land navigation as I get back into hiking/backpacking after a 30 hear pause. Well Done Sir.
The benefit of your series however is that you actually have the skill to TEACH! Too many folks out there on YT don't have a clue as to how to teach. Your videos are excellent! Thanks for this series, it has really helped me to renew and refresh my thinking from back in the day. Thanks!
I don’t choose your video out of the blue. You have thought me so much stuff bro from shelters, food, what to bring with me and just solid information that will stay in my head.
I was a Sea Cadet growing up in Central Ontario Canada. I took an orienteering course as part of the cadet training program but I never had the information really click. I watched this video and all the pieces of that knowledge came back to me and clicked together in my brain with satisfying clarity. Thank you for creating it, sometimes it's not the material but the right instructor that achieves success for different people. Your class was excellent for me.
I appreciate your efforts in breaking things down so guys like me can understand what you're teaching. Teaching is not for everyone. Most of the time people skip important steps or forget a series of steps altogether. Then the student gets lost-- if you'll excuse the pun-- and finally gets frustrated. When there's no frustration it's a good learning experience, especially when you take what you learned and apply them in the field. What I'm trying to say is-- you're a good teacher.
There may be other channels talking about this subject, but your clear, direct, and no-nonsense approach to *any* subject is always greatly appreciated.
I am a Master Maine Guide and have been tromping in the woods and mountains all my life, utilizing a map and compass to 'stay found', so to speak. I have read numerous books, seen seminars and youtube videos on the subject and many of those resources make things too complex for novice navigators. You either learn it fully or you may find yourself in a lost type of situation, confused and not knowing what to do next. I have seen it firsthand. There was nothing confusing about this video. I feel that even novice navigators would find this information clear, concise, and would be able to freely roam the woods with confidence. I love the idea of keeping the map out of this video, to allow people to learn the compass skills first, build confidence, and gain experience before introducing the map. The map is what usually stumps people, mostly in dealing with declination. Keep up the good work, and I am looking forward to your map video. Cheers from Maine.
I watch you cause you deliver in a style that I like. No crazy music nor flashing lights. Don't even know does other channels yet. If it's not worth you time, then it is what it is.
Great job. The walk, than 90 turn, count, 270, to get back to your truck is a practice model. Something a father can try to get grip on, and teach his family.
Thanks so much! You are literally the first person to explain compasses and pace counts in a way I can totally understand! I appreciate your time and effort on this.
Thanks for the video. My Grandpa taught me how to use a compass as a kid. But that was 40 yrs ago. It's been about 10yrs +/- since I've used any of those skills. That is something I don't ever want to forget. A quote I've always liked is, "It's the things that we do that we don't have to do, that make the difference when it's do late to do anything about it. When you are lost in the woods, it's late to learn how to use a compass. Thanks again
Outstanding. I was in the ARNG 20 years ago. Learned this in AIT and PLDC. This is a great refresher and will help me teach my son. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I can't believe it took me this long to find my way to this video. Land nav and orienteering has always been something that completely eluded me in the details, despite my father-in-law's efforts.
Giving instructional videos like this a wide audience is important, particularly for people who overutilize GPS apps and smartphones. Understanding the basics of longitude/latitude and knowing how to not only use a compass, but also reading topo maps.
THIS video was SUPPOSED to be my STARTING POINT! I don't have to look ANY FURTHER now! I HOPE to see this coupled with maps! Thanks for the time and effort you put into this video and make it as simple as possible.
I never knew what a compass could do ....Amazing and thank you . I am the kind of person that gets lost, I freaked recently after trying to return to my vehicle which was no where to be found.
Hey Corporal this is the best basic land Nav course I have ever seen, it simple, basic and very easy to understand. I was in the US Army and you explained it better. The use of the Suunto compass was outstanding along with the Ranger beads. Thanks for posting and sharing, I am new to your sit, keep up the good work ! Former Army 11 Bravo
I've said this several times already, but worth repeating, Great Channel, Great instruction, very well explained and shown, that is why you are sought out, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge, keep them coming, God Bless You Good Sir
It's no mistake that we watch your videos... Your no nonsense, logical approach is so refreshing and that is awesome my friend... Keep up the amazing work.
As an ex military guy , I was trained with the very same compass , many yrs. ago , I enjoyed the recap, you did a wonderful job, please keep going with compass and map instruction! Fine job!
Corporal, you have a way of explaining things that just sinks in for some of us better than the ways of others. There's no one teaching method that's right for every person, which is why I'm glad there are different videos with different ways of handling this information. Yours works for me, Coalcracker Bushcraft's might work for someone else, Canterbury a third, and so on. Some of it will overlap, too, but that's not a completely bad thing imho. Sometimes it sticks better if a lesson is presented in more than one way, by more than one person.
Okay, I’ve watched several land navigation videos recently, as I haven’t used a compass and map in over 35 years, since I was in the scouts. I wanted to pick up the skills again. Your video is one of the best, if not the best, I’ve seen in the past several weeks. Coincidentally, I ordered and received the exact same compass that you use in this video. I still have my basic Suunto A1000 compass from a few decades ago, but wanted a more feature packed model. Excellent video, and I look forward to viewing more of your content.
This was so good. I realized I didn't remember how to use a compass and was looking for videos. That was a great explanation on the very basics and then upped it a level so I feel like I can actually put it into practice. You're a good teacher and I appreciate the video.
I realize that you made this video a while ago so you may not read this, but I hope you do. You need to realize that not everyone teaches the same way, and not everyone learns the same way. I feel you teach very clearly and are very good at showing what you are doing as well as explaining. I learn much easier from you then from Mr. C or Mr W. So please continue. Thank you. 👍🏻
I love your videos. They're clear, and concise. I only wish I'd heard your explanations when at school (in UK), instead of the useless waffle we were taught. It even confused my mother when she heard what the teacher had taught us, and she was a qualified geography teacher herself! My best memory was (many years ago) us finding a group of lost army cadets on our land very late one rainy night, and our mother holding an easy learn lesson on map reading in the dark that got them back on their correct, albeit soggy way. 😆 Sometimes it's not what you teach, it's how you teach it, and you teach it really well.
Honestly, for me and for what I've seen from you if you say it, I believe it. I think you have show us you know what you are talking about and your skills and i think is awesome that you have upload this video. Thank you and greetings from Mexico
I’d like to see you make those next vids. You break everything down in segments and explain them in simple terms. Makes it very easy to understand and retain. Thanks so much!
Great video on basics of land nav. I have not used this info since 1977 end of Army tour of 10 yrs . Brings back lots of memories. Nostalgic trip down memory lane. Thanks for sharing.
This is the best video I’ve seen on this subject for beginners. Others I’ve seen and read may start simple but then make a leap and start talking talking about things that they haven’t defined yet and it gets confusing. Thanks for the video; definitely wasn’t a waste of time!
This is so far the absolutely BEST land nav video I have watched!!! I have watched some others that don’t start with the basics which caused confusion. I would prefer to take the class from you before someone else. PLEASE prepare the next installment of this process! 😃
In today's mail my new Suunto MC-2 arrived everything i like about it except one thing , the mirror lid opens really hard and i hope in time that will become easier .. The new compass has the scales for Topo map use i wanted and more of them than my old Silva 515 Ranger which did not have one 1:24000 scale on the base plate .. My new Suunto is a fine tool.. I had it out on the trail tonight before darkness set in .. Thanks for all the excellent compass and map tips..
Thanks a lot. I would appreciate seeing more and detailed use of combined tools (here: compass, waypoint marking, ranger beads) in praxis. There's a lot of theoretical knowledge available in books and videos, but the practical use is underrepresented. For me the use of waypoint markings during foraging or searching for water was a really good advice. Please more. Best greetings from Hamburg, Germany.
Some people preach and some people teach; you definitely have the teaching gene. Keep up the great work. Most of these videos are made by preachers with no communication skills other than parroting what's in an instruction guide. You lend experience and communication skills that's sorely missed with these other presenters. I bet you wrote some killer SOPs that mirrored these presentations for your guys when you were in the Corps.
Finally! Somebody broke it down and gave great comprehensive instruction on how to use land nav! Great video! Definitely hope to see the map and compass video!
Corporal I would like to see more but to be honest I am very green at this but I will try and keep up and not slow the class down lol. Thanks and keep the videos coming!
I am glad you decided to tackle this subject-you made it clear and easy to understand. I can easily imagine you teaching land nav at the NCO academy! Good job, Marine.
Please keep these videos coming. Great stuff with very straight forward and basic explanations that are easy to follow. I enjoy the videos with your son, too. However, I tend to get a lot more info in a smaller span of time on these short, but more informative videos. Very impressive. Thank you. Best of luck to you.
Navigation/reading a compass shooting a back Azimuth and proper pace counting are very perishable skills. THANK YOU for reminding me of my military experience/Training its been decades. well done troop
I know I am late to the party, however, I enjoyed Your presentation, reminds me of our land navigation glass from the army back in the late 70s. Keep up the good work!
I don’t have much experience, other than hiking trails, but I am fascinated by your videos and teaching. Relatively new to boon docking and living off grid, so I really appreciate your videos and time.
Thank you for refreshing my orientation skills. It's been a couple decades since I had to use a compass and heading to Ohio in a couple weeks for class. Needed this refresher.
That was awesome. I was in the USMC back in the mid 80s, 2nd BN 7th Marines. Thought I would do a little memory refreshing. Love your style, you explain things in a way that makes it easy to remember. Semper Fi.
Ex brit Vet here. we always used to say a picture paints a thousands words. Love how it's sweet and simple. No gimmicks straight up facts. Keep up the good work buddy. 👍😊
I found this super educational, inspirational and shared the info with my husband! Thanks so much for taking the time, and I look forward to more on this subject.
Unfortunately too many parents think their precious little snowflake is too fragile for anything remotely 'military' these days. They'd rather brainwash them about 'inclusivity' or 'how to find a safe space when encountering a microaggresive trigger'.
My BSA troop had some sorry leaders that didn’t teach much. I’ve learned more in 3-4 episodes here in a couple of hours than they taught us in 2 years...
Can't I just take Corporal with me on my hikes and let him do the navigation in exchange for some gorp? Seriously, thanks for keeping it simple for stupids (me). Looking forward to the follow-ups.
I picked this video because I have now watched several of your videos. I don't have lots of time to waste looking for competent sources. Your videos are concise and informative. I plan to utilize your videos as my first source for research/education on bushcraft and survival.
Don't matter how many people have covered a topic. If I don't like the look, attitude or they way something is explained/filmed, I will move on to another YT vid. Found you that way! FWIW, I know a few who don't like the way you come across. But I like watching you, so that proves my point!
I have watched all the bushcraft channels and have become partial to Corporal's Corner. Yes, please do more on land navigation. I wish ya'll would add it to your courses at Self Reliance Outfitters. Maybe do a basic, intermediate, and advanced level. I have scoured the internet for navigation courses. Not much out there except for REI. Also, If you could post what classes you teach at Self Reliance in 2019, I would love to attend them. Thank you for this video.
I have viewed a lot of utube on using a compass and you my friend are the best , most understandable You are a no BS kind of guy and i respect that. Thank you!
I don't comment a lot on vids I see, but I gotta drop one here. Thanks! bunches. My pops is a 30yr MGSgt (USMC Ret.) and even though I went "Chair-Force" lol (USAF) I remember him teaching me basic compass skills in the woods and hills of NC (Cherry Point MCAS) and WV (White Sulfur Springs) . Brings back lots of memories... and yes, he used his "Old-school 'Nam era aluminum" compass to teach me (still got it) . Just wanted to say Thank you for the refresher course because you reminded me of things I forgot and I appreciate your attention to detail

I agree with Kim on this
From across the pond.
Always enjoyable your videos.

I concur with Kimberly. Just do it. What did they say? “Just make it and we will watch it!”
FACTS
Best spent 27 minutes of my day. No bells and whistles, just clear and concise. Much thanks
same here 👍
Felt like 15min tops. It's so good.
Absolutely
he knows what he's talking about 100%
Just found this and its great for total novices like me!
Yes, Yes, Yes Please continue. Your style is crystal clear while adding understanding with insight. Outstanding!

Couldnt agree more!
I hope you do a tutorial on topographic map reading and combine compass work with that.
i second that
The gift that keeps on giving. 5 years later I just found this video and it's just as informative. Clear and concise. Thanks

Thank you for being straight forward and recommending others... I see so many people out there saying “I’m the best and this is the true truth”
"Gear adrift is a gift." Great line!
I wish president Trump had learned that from either General Kelley or Mattis.

Haven't done land navigation since I was in the Corp, been out 29 yrs now brings back good memories, rock on devil dog oohray

Who's Dave
Outstanding. I was in the ARNG 20 years ago. Learned this in AIT and PLDC. This is a great refresher and will help me teach my son. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Takes me back to 1977 and my first year in the 4th Marines. Excellent series Corporal Kelly. Best survivalist channel on UA-cam.
Refreshing for basic pathfinder class. In this video you were at 130k but now your 708k awesome job sir.

THIS video was SUPPOSED to be my STARTING POINT! I don't have to look ANY FURTHER now! I HOPE to see this coupled with maps! Thanks for the time and effort you put into this video and make it as simple as possible.
Feels like basic training all over again. Thanks Corporal... Refreshing
Loved this video but especially ‘dog in the doghouse’ and ‘red in the shed’!!! It gave me a great basic in compasses. Thank you so much.
I've said this several times already, but worth repeating, Great Channel, Great instruction, very well explained and shown, that is why you are sought out, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge, keep them coming,
God Bless You Good Sir
Pure gold. I've seen this instruction many times but this is greatness unstruction
I have been watching your videos and your videos are very precise thanks for doing this video. Army vet 1976-1978.
I'm trying out for Green Berets soon...I'm gonna crush land navigation with your tips. Keep these tips coming!
God bless our heroes & military.
Hope all goes well
It's no mistake that we watch your videos... Your no nonsense, logical approach is so refreshing and that is awesome my friend... Keep up the amazing work.
As an ex military guy , I was trained with the very same compass , many yrs. ago , I enjoyed the recap, you did a wonderful job, please keep going with compass and map instruction! Fine job!
Thank You. I have read books and watched videos, but it finally clicked with you teaching it.
I am looking forward to what you do next.
7/29/2022 one of the best videos on land navigation
Made my whole family watch this!
Me too! And I was in an orienteering team in high school, taught land nav in reserves a million years ago, lol.
I understood this better with your instruction than I did at Ft. Benning 20 years ago. Great job!
Sometimes it's not what you teach, it's how you teach it, and you teach it really well.
This is this simplest and best basic video I've seen on this subject. Excellent work sir!
This is so far the absolutely BEST land nav video I have watched!!! I have watched some others that don’t start with the basics which caused confusion. I would prefer to take the class from you before someone else. PLEASE prepare the next installment of this process! 😃
This is one of the best explained videos on the subject I’ve seen 👍
Haven't had to do this since Camp Pendleton and NTA in Okinawa over 35 years ago. Outstanding class reinforcing the basics. Well Done. Semper Fi
In my opinion this is the best land nav video I have found on youtube. Thank you for this. Clear and concise.
This explanation is the best I’ve ever seen on how to use a compass. Thank you
In today's mail my new Suunto MC-2 arrived everything i like about it except one thing , the mirror lid opens really hard and i hope in time that will become easier ..
Harry claims don't be a scumbag. There's no room for people like you in our military
This is the most concise definition of compass navigation I have seen.
Navigation/reading a compass shooting a back Azimuth and proper pace counting are very perishable skills. THANK YOU for reminding me of my military experience/Training its been decades.
well done troop
Your explanation makes me actually want to do this lol.
I know I am late to the party, however, I enjoyed Your presentation, reminds me of our land navigation glass from the army back in the late 70s. Keep up the good work!
Really good...definitely show the map segment. :)
He'll yeah, do it bro, let's see the next step in the series.
Well this was the 1st one I clicked on man. Love the vids.
Good video, very easy to understand. Would like to see more. Thank you.
Thanks so much for taking the time, and I look forward to more on this subject.
whatever happened to kids going into Boy Scouts and learning a lot of this stuff like I did when I became an eagle scout and was a cub leader.👍
It was the Boy Scouts that changed, not boys.
Unfortunately too many parents think their precious little snowflake is too fragile for anything remotely 'military' these days.
They'd rather brainwash them about 'inclusivity' or 'how to find a safe space when encountering a microaggresive trigger'.
Plus sexual assaults discovered in Scout leaders nearly as many as the Catholic Church per head of population.
Good presentation, I would like you to continue on. It's an important subject that can be intimidating. Thanks.
Definitely would like to see more very easy to understand thanks.
