There's a much easier way right off the bat. Besides being at a much higher level when I decided to face him I had REFLECT relics equipped on all party members.
this is why i bore myself with 256 WON BATTLES so i can turn cursed shield into Paladin shield, so i can learn the Ultima spell. afterwards it's easy peasy lemon squeezy

How very interesting the berserk strat works even on the Magic Master. Very interesting.
Use rasp/osmose to take away his magic power. That way, he won't cast ultima when he dies at the end.
I beat him with super balls. 10 or so did the trick. Still need to cast Re-raise though for the Ultimate at the end.
How did you make it up there on such low levels? The RNG alone seems to prohibit it.

I also chose to have the Ragnarok magicite INSTEAD OF the Ragnarok sword
