  • The Fine China Man talks about crazing on china and what people should look for. What is the difference between a crack and crazing? Watch and find out. TIP: Watch this video in full screen mode, the crazing is hard to get on video but you can barely see it in full screen.

I just received a replacement plate of my china that I bought on EBay. When I told seller back was "cracked" they informed me that was probably crazing, which was "common for a piece that age." I had never heard this term as I really know nothing about china. They do have a replacement without crazing for exchange. This video was very helpful. I will know what to ask about the next time I buy a replacement. Thank you for the information!

thank you. I wasn't sure what crazing was but I knew not to use plates when crazed.

You are welcome. I will try to make a new video on crazing in the future. I have a more crisp camera now and I think I can get some good examples of it on video.

    I have Whieldon Ware
    F Winkle & Co Savoy
Beautiful blue and white English flat soup bowls.
    All are crazed.
We’ve used them for years and now are concerned that we shouldn’t use them.
What can we do with these plates?

For me crazing of a plate or piece of dinnerware earns it the status of a display piece. They can still be beautiful (and many people like that look). On display they are a memory of days gone by.

thank you so much for your reply.
Would there be a market for theses plates, not that we want money for them just wondered what to do with 11 beautiful
Plates. Would a museum want them?

wow, if I hadn't seen this I would never have stopped buying crazed dishware for my collection. so, how do we know the value of old plates without cracks?

I just listed a 4 piece Old Willow Myott on ebay. l isted as having crazing but now I know it's not crazing. I also noticed a line on one as if it was repaired. Why would someone go to all the trouble to patch/repair the set if it's not valuable? I just found you and subscribed. Going through more of your videos. Thanks for this channel.

I don’t understand the purpose of this video. I have a piece I don’t want to use, but was hoping this would show how to get rid of crazing.
Obviously, not get rid of but to clear the darkness.

I have heard that some people use some type of bleach to lighten it up but I do not know the exact formula. There has also been talk in years past of removing the crazed glaze and putting a new glaze on. There was a large company working on the technique but last I heard they had too many failures to take in customer owned pieces. I was told they sometimes perform the process on their own pieces.

Question: There’s a 1940s teapot on eBay that I want very badly but there’s crazing on the inside :(. I’m assuming that it wouldn’t be safe to use then right? I was going to get it anyway and take the risk but don’t think I want to be consuming lead if that’s the case...

If you really like it I would get it as a display piece instead. I do not know what harm would be caused by using that particular piece but there could be some. Also, the piece itself will stain if you have coffee in it and it is crazed, it may begin to darken at first in the cracks and then spread. My policy is typically this: once a piece gets crazed it becomes display only. Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving!

It's really funny but I found your video when I was trying to clean two small plates and guess what. In the end of the video you are holding the same small plates!

i was once told by a royal doulton rep to pull out everything and wash it once a year to prevent crazing. i dont know how true that is

That is interesting. It is very possible. I do know that wrapping china (especially depression glass) in newspaper will help protect it from the heat since the newspaper will hold a little moisture. My grandmother had her mother's set of Miss America wrapped in newspaper and stored in a hot store room (Summers around 110 degrees) for about 30 years until she decided to give it to me just before she passed away (I didn't even know she had it). The set had no damage.

@@finechinaman3448 I don't own much depression glass, I think I have some tucked away somewhere.. I just perused your video on your grandmother's set and the newspaper was from 1976? wow. The year I was born.. now I'm showing my age lol. I do like pink glass though. My mother has a fair bit of it and its quite lovely. She has all sorts of pieces.. the one I like most is actually a lady.. I don't know what that is, but its in one of her downstairs china cabinets. Talking of cabinets, that gorgeous astragal glazed dresser behind you in many videos.. what is the age on that? Its quite fetching. I've been looking for something like that myself. I'm sorry if i've bombarded you with questions over your videos but its not common to find people who share similar interests like this. My mother was the one who was into china and when me and my brothers were young she dragged us around shops that sold fine china (and antiques) and I guess it kind of stuck with me. I wouldn't even dream to think Id own a twentieth of her collections. Its not all dinner sets, lots of things.. some newish, some old.. like the spode slop pail i mentioned in another video.
When me and my brothers were kids we ate off bunnykins .. breakfast cereal on bunnykins, christmas on her lavender rose.. or christmas on her noritake (its got a red rim.. dunno the pattern) used proper cutlery, i forget the pattern and brand but it is hallmarked.. we all had food pushers.. mine is still at my parents.. we will all inherit a complete dinner set - maybe for 8 people. not sure .. glad im not getting the red noritake one i never liked it lol. when i was young, royal doulton was doing a bunnykins thing at one of the premier department stores here in nsw australia and they had set up a tea room plus, for a small fee you could paint your own bunnykins plate however you like and it would get fired and sent to you. So Ive got that too.
My daily set is queens plain (wedgwood) in the cream and i use hallmarked (stamped) 18/10 (sant'andrea) for cutlery.
