This is precisely how beans should look. Dark red beans are my favorite. For the record, traditional southern cornbread goes with beans & greens. I prefer smoked neckbones over ham hocks.
My father made beans like this, but he took two or three slices of ham and chopped it into the beans after sauteing it slightly first. He used chopped onion but didn't do the green peppers but used granulated garlic instead of chopped. My mother-in-law, a born southerner always put a tablespoon of sugar in her cornbread.
Those beans look so amazing. I like either kind of corn bread with my Lima bean soup. With a spicier soup I like the sweet. With the lighter seasoned but rich soup I like the plain cornbread and some butter in the center. Nothing like coming home from school and smelling my mom’s navy bean or Lima bean soup. So amazing. Thanks for posting
Stop it wit all that sugar!! Lol.. but seriously though, my mother had to put sugar in the cornbread to get us to eat it when we were kids. Now I don't need the sugar.😂😂😂
I add Cajun seasoning towards the end and a capful of smoke and 1/2 tsp of celery seed and 1/2 tsp of oregano and thyme AND white pepper. Game changer!!!
Great butter beans....my great aunt 89 y-o loves these with cast iron made cornbread.....she uses turkey, chicken stock, lil salt/pepper and onions(sometimes green bell pepper)😋😋😋.....finally at 13:15....imagining the taste while eating frosted flakes🙅♀🤭🤭🤭🤭
After the Blackeyes (which are the best I've ever tasted, hands down!), I've been WAITING for AB's Grandmom's Lima Beans recipe. They make my mouth water just looking at them. Thanks, Grandmom!
@@SmokinandGrillinwithAB when I was a child, my mother had to put sugar in the cornbread to make us kids eat it. But as I got older I don't need any sweet.
Guess what Tim? I do have a video saying that and showing it on a couple of videos. I try and give alternatives in the kitchen. But, you're right. It does level it up even more.
Hey AB... This is my favorite bean. I was a daddy's girl and he always fed me these. What you've done with the level up.... Definitely gonna give it a try! Happy Sunday fam!!❤
I grew up on delicious beans and cornbread. My mother made them every week, all kinds. My favorite cornbread with butter beans was hot water cornbread. Moms used to make a huge plater of crispy delicious hot water cornbread. Your pot was legit, gotta bring that old thang back and make some this weekend 😋❤
Gotta be sweet cornbread. To my Jiffy mix I add 8 oz of sour cream, 14oz of cream corn, 14oz of whole kernel corn, stick of melted butter, cup of diced onions, 1/4 cup of pickled spicy jalapenos (if I want some heat), two eggs beaten, bake at 350 for 45 to 60 minutes depending on your oven till golden. Give it a try!! I don't always do it quite like this but it's a variation I love.
Made this today for dinner tonight! Only variation: I used smoked turkey wings. It's currently cooking in my Dutch oven, with 1 hour to go, BUT it's already tasty and has the house smelling JUST like Thanksgiving! Thanks for YET another banger AB!! 💕
I was never much a fan of butterbeans growing up but as an adult I learned properly cooked they were really good. We had a old school Southern lady that knew her stuff working at the plant cafeteria before they cut cost and did away with the cafeteria and her butter beans were the first I ever liked. With this recipe I can finally make them myself. 👍
I put mine in the insta pot for 1 hr. They are done. I pre boil my ham hocks then add them with chicken broth 1 carton & 2 cups water. It’s as if the bumped all night & you get that bean sauce. Oooo weee, yum!
Now how did I miss this one?! I surely was thinking about my grandmother who recently passed. This is something she and my mother used to make frequently. Had to feed allll the kids 😅 Oh and Sweet cornbread!
❤❤❤❤❤That’s how I have always made my Lima beans 🫘 but I don’t use pork anymore because it makes my nose bleed. I use smoke turkey. My recipe comes from my grandmother and Aunt Rose and Aunt Ruth.
I told you, your like Barry White. I have made these but with Navy and Canninelli beans. I also like corn bread in any way I can get it. I have had it both ways also with creamed corn and jalapeños which is awesome. Have a great week.
Funny thought the other day, I was thinking about my mother's butter beans. Just some fine cooking right here! Thank you for cooking those butter beans, yes sir!
Yesss I agree with a little butter in those beans. But I’m not a rice 🍚 eater myself. Just the beans and cornbread do it for me every time 👌🏾💗Yep!!! Love the Chef 👨🏾🍳 here and the recipe though.
AB, this looks so good! As far as the cornbread is concerned, if I'm going to make it, I add some stuff to it. Diced cheddar cheese and jalapenos. Of course, baked in a cast iron pan greased with bacon fat.
Unc you need to go on next level chef with Gordon Ramsey because your recipes are delicious, my house been eating your recipes the last 5 nights in a row and there awesome. I definitely think you can win
Being from the south myself, I now live in Illinois, unfortunately. I say unfortunately because I can’t find food like they cook back home. I can make it, but I don’t have the time. Sure do miss it.

Real food right there, everyone in my hood grew up on this.
Wish I grew up in your hood!
Yes sir……….
Ain’t nothing better than Grandma’s recipes!
We grew up eating ham and lima beans. 70 years later, still one of my favorites 😅
Just made some last week 😊
@@dwwatts1 hope it was as good as your mom made it

My father’s from Mississippi and calls those butter beans!! I love his red beans 🫘, rice 🍚, and corn bread!!!
We call them butter beans in my family, too.
Okay, I'm glad you mentioned that because I didn't know the difference between the two. I grew up in Alabama. We ate them a lot Lima beans.
My mom used to call them pocket books. The little green ones we called lima beans.
That's how my mom made them all my life.
Oh yeah I grew up on beans and rice and ham or sausage or smoked turkey. Looks delicious. ❤❤😮
So amazing. I WILL be making this exactly the way you did. And Sweet Cornbread for us.
Stop it wit all that sugar!! Lol.. but seriously though, my mother had to put sugar in the cornbread to get us to eat it when we were kids. Now I don't need the sugar.😂😂😂
The color on those Limas & cornbread in the thumbnail is ON POINT! Limas are my #1 favorite bean. 😋😁
I add Cajun seasoning towards the end and a capful of smoke and 1/2 tsp of celery seed and 1/2 tsp of oregano and thyme AND white pepper. Game changer!!!
And of course my secret ingredient…….. sugar
Good morning and happy Sunday. I woke up right on time

Who else must have cornbread with their lima beans? 😋😋
Probably everybody. The real question is, sweet or not, sweet cornbread 🤔
Sweet for me
@@SmokinandGrillinwithAB when I was a child, my mother had to put sugar in the cornbread to make us kids eat it. But as I got older I don't need any sweet.
Sweet for me as well 🤗✋🏿
Take it up a notch...soak your beans in the chicken stock. Game changer! Can't believe you aren't already doing this!!

My granny would be proud of you! I don’t cook but I may try this. Never had them with onions a green pepper.
My first job in the family kitchen was beans. Snapping pole beans & getting rocks & cracked beans out of dry beans.

I like the traditional Southern cornbread [no sugar] and I like it thin and crispy.
Making this tonight. Last Sunday I made the green beans and last Friday I made the Tuscan Mac.
I put mine in the insta pot for 1 hr. They are done. I pre boil my ham hocks then add them with chicken broth 1 carton & 2 cups water. It’s as if the bumped all night & you get that bean sauce. Oooo weee, yum!
I like both the classic and the sweet cornbread, but those beanie babies right there gone get the classic on the side, when I cook em 😍😍
