Casio WK-1600: Big keyboard, BIG DEMO

- The Casio WK-1600 is more than just an ordinary Casio keyboard with an extra 15 keys. It has a respectable set of sounds, same for rhythms, and it has a really charmingly limited synthesizer for getting creative with sound ...up to a point.
I have the radio Shack version which is the MD 1700, outstanding board all around
It is :)
It's a good keyboard, in 2000, the tones were outstanding, in 2022, the tones are just average, still perfectly giggable, the pads, woodwind instruments and strings all sound decent as well, you can create some very interesting sounds on this board, some people complain about the low polyphony, if 32 notes of polyphony was enough to make our favorite songs in the 90s and early 2000s, it's enough to make good songs today, the Korg m1 had 16 notes of polyphony and was responsible for some of the most beloved songs ever written
Maybe average, but LOUD, and louder = better!
This sounds like a keeper.
Yep, or I'll at least some time making samples of it :) GF
Excelente video, nos permitiste ver amplia variedad de sonidos que contiene y su calidad de sonido. Muy bien
Gracias por el amable mensaje :) #gearfacts
Excelent video.. can you make other one with some of the features like make patterns, modify sounds, and record a song with many instruments please? thanks
Yes sure, I've made a follow-up video that shows most of those things :) Gearfacts
I have a WK 3000 which has 100 DSP effects plus 100 user, the ZPI sounds aren't too bad either
Can't wait to try that one ...you don't see them for sale much, I guess people hold onto them :) GF
@Kitty Love yes, I have one too, please can you tell me if it's possible to register master eq settings to memory??
Can you tell me if it's possible to register master eq settings to memory?? Thanks
I recognize some of those sounds from roland keyboards
Yep :) GF
Skil Sidewinder Casios are similar to Rolands
That’s cool . I was lucky enough to get a wk 1800 on the cheap . $25 about 6 or 7 years ago . That does have a lot of cool sounds . However this one you have may in fact be even better than the wk 1800
Total bargain man. I have little experience with the WK series ...can't remember ever owning another.
Gearfacts I said once before I have the wk 7500 also I bought about 7 years ago . It’s big , heavy and bulky but has a ton of features .
Lol. Got my 1600 from a yard sale for about 20 bucks about 8 or 9 yrs ago. Dude was like ugh, the speakers don't work. Im like i will try to fix it...knowing i only cared about headphones and outputs. Not bad. Solid sounds and a sequencer. All i needed.
I have one of those, mines silver… mine is a WK1800
Hello ! I don’t know if you still respond to comments on this video, but I was wondering how you were able to achieve such a clear recording of when you were playing. Is there a way to record direct audio on this keyboard ? Thanks if you do get to respond
Yep I’m still responding :) This video was recorded directly from the headphone output to my camera’s audio input. The trick is that you have to be able to hear it as well as record, so I connected a double headphone adapter to the keyboard, effectively making two headphone sockets, one for me one for the camera. You can get everything you need from an electronics store for just a few dollars :)
Are the Keys interchangeable with the WK 3200?
Those two models were actually manufactured about 10 years apart so I would have serious doubts about whether the keys are mechanically compatible… Only one way to find out though!
@@gearfacts I need a replacement assembly because one broke so I was just wondering. But it’s possible a Little modding may work
hello i was wondering if you could do a setting up video for this keyboard because i have the same one but i just dont know how it set it up😅
Ahhh I’m sorry but I don’t have this keyboard anymore! The manual is still available on the net
10:30 The Drums !
Hello :) Hope you’ll see this comment, because I really need an answer. Is there a way in this piano to turn on a sustain pedal sound without having an actual pedal?
If you press function repeatedly it'll show you a long series of options and I think sustain might be one of them. Not 100% sure...
is there a software version DAW of this?? Any updated synth keyboard with these same stock sounds?? Help!!
I honestly don't know. All I can suggest is to start searching the net, or contact Casio.
Once upon a time back in 1992, I received a CASIO keyboards catalog direct from Casio which featured a mystery Casio workstation, ya know where this is going. It kinda looked like this Casio WK1600 but it was more bubbly in shape. It also had a floppy drive and 61 keys instead of 76. Perhaps you know it? It was not released in the USA as I NEVER saw it in real life, but started seeing these WK and CTK models instead. The MZ2000 became the actual released model in 2000, some 8 years later! Any clues?
I had an MZ2000 just a couple of years before I started Gearfacts (in fact there was no UA-cam at the time). It was monstrous in size, sounded pretty good and was clearly capable of great things ...but in true Casio style there was nothing intuitive about it at all, it seemed to say "I am here to be admired, not enjoyed".
9:30 actually release, not aftertouch.
True.
Completely a mix of existing Yamaha and Roland synths
So, ahead of its time, would you say?
Hello. I have a question. What is the polarity of the adapter?
I don't have this board anymore, so i suggest looking up the manual online (search "Casio WK1600 PDF") and going to the specifications section. The info should be there hopefully :)
I want this tell me because my teacher has one of those great sound
:) Gearfacts
where is a link to synth-section demo ??
It's going to be uploaded on Thursday, I'll add the link to the end then :) Gearfacts
I can't find the service manual for this
I cannot get my WK-1600 to pickup on my PC. I am using a midi usb cable, and although Windows picks up the sub midi, there is no signal coming through in my music software. Could it be that it is not compatible with windows 10?
The midi interface might have compatibility problems. The keyboard is equally incompatible with everything without the interface. Hard to diagnose, but I'd be looking at the computer and interface first.
@@gearfacts thanks for your reply. I am going to get a different sound card with proper midi ports instead of Usb.
Problems with those big WK's is that they don't sound good enough to act as a portable piano and that they are too big for a beginner. So I had to sell mine below the market value.
Yes it's an uncommon design with a niche appeal.
They sound perfectly adequate coming out of the proper amplifier.....
@@jaquesteddyruxpin932 accomps styles are good too
Hello gear facts.
I have a question.
I purchased the Casio WK 1800.
How do I find the Octave function on it?
I want the left tune to move toward the right.
It's a long keyboard and I hope you understand what I'm saying.
Can you help?
Yes, if you go into the menu and scroll through the options (I think you press 4 and 6 to scroll when you're in menu mode)
until you see 'octave'. Then you can use the +/- buttons to change it.
@@gearfacts ok, thank you for your quick response.
Sir I have a wk1600.i didn't use it about 6 months, after 6 months when I come to play I found that display led not glowing but display showing functions. Another dsp functions not working. When I press key to play a bad sound produce.sir help please how can I fix this problem?......... Thanks
Try a different power supply, it sounds like power is insufficient.
Great video, very excited to be getting one of these. Not clear, maybe I wasn't paying attention. It appears to have a bit of an arpeggiator?
Yeah there is a sort-of-arpeggiator in the synth section. It sends pitch all over the place in various algorithms of your choice, but it's very limited when it comes to following tempo. Fun keyboard though, I think you'll be pleased with it :)
@@gearfacts Well I have it now and I am more than pleased. This is the best keyboard I've ever had, I think. I never even realized Casio made such good ones. When I got a Yamaha DGX-220 I was pretty blown away, but I think I like this better. Thanks, and subscribed.
@@afreezaphorogiancossack2194 Thanks for watching and for your comments, AFZC :)
@@gearfacts I've made a little project of purchasing every cheap keyboard I could get my hands on for a few months now and you have become one of the people I have learned the most about them from. It's great to see some practical, hands-on demos from an objective source. Cheers!
@@afreezaphorogiancossack2194 no, I should thank YOU 👍
Proprio come il mio. Salve
It’s a cool one 👍
Why would amy buy some thing on line with out hearing the different sounds. I dont hear a thing on my phone.
I put in headphone still cant hear any sounds. Just see the writing.
Are they used key boards?
@@corinneboots5113 yep everything I review is used.
How do you set the different sounds and rhythms I just started using the settings but before I had Grand pro don't know how to 'get back there. Just experimenting
press 'voice' or 'tone' and choose 001 for piano
I got this keyboard but i have no clue how to work it, i want it to play normal grand piano but it wont it keeps adding other sounds
That’s strange, it should default to ordinary piano when you switch it on. But if you press “tone“ (or it might be something like “sound“) then just type 000 on the keypad, that should definitely be default piano.
@@gearfacts I'll definitely try it thank you!
Well it didnt work :( @gearfacts
@@rochietayy So no sound at all?
@gearfacts theres sound it just has an echo that makes it sound kind of like a horn
Hey, what stand and chair goes perfectly for this?
I made a video about keyboard stands recently, you should check it out (just search "gearfacts keyboard stands") :) #gearfacts
How does this keyboard work? I want to know
I'd start by pressing the 'Tone" button, then using the +/- buttons to select a few different tones and try them out. You can also get the manual by googling "Casio WK-1600 PDF"
@@gearfacts Casio is very secretive as to how their keyboards actually work, including the synthesis methods
@@unyu-cyberstorm64 Yeah I've found them to be very formal and distant whenever I've contacted them, like they just want you to go away. They're products are rapidly improving though, I think they'll become a real force.
this sounds really good as i have found one for $50, which sounds like a steal ...
i have the WK-500 model which is also quite decent ... bought it new more than a decade ago for $200 (down from $500) ...
i have a slight issue with it though: when i use its 5-channels mixer, which works just fine, there is no way to readjust the volume of each of the 6 tracks in each channel individually: they all sound at the same volume, which makes fine mixing almost impossible unless you use a computer software via the MIDI port ... anyone knows how to play each track in a different volume from the start when mixing?
I agree, this is a problem and I haven't found a solution yet.
You can only go so deep into the features of a synth of this price before you hit a "wall" with them, the features are a lot more prevalent and in-depth on this board than a lot of other boards from the same era and before, but this board is 2001 technology, boards like this were the best you could get before you got into the pro stuff, which was out of a lot of people's reach monetarily, but if you want a board that allows you to go more in depth on the features, you're going to have to go with the newer WK series boards(6600, 7600)
@@Am71919 yes ... i have also got the WK-6600 and WK-1600 models, which i got cheap a few months back ...
they are much more advanced than the WK-500, which has only a 6 channels mixer with no volume control per channel for example, while the other two have 16-channel mixers with volume control and some extra controls per each separate channel! :-)
but the WK-500 has one thing, eastern scales tuning across the entire octaves, which the other two don't have as far as i know: ... and that was the main reason i got the WK-500 back then since i do need that feature ... but of course i'd rather have all these features in one (or all) keyboards that i have ...
as for professional keyboards, well, yes, some top of the line super-costly ones are just great for many reasons ... but as long as any keyboard does have an MIDI port of some kind and can be controlled via a computer, then it's more than professional enough for many projects imo! and all mid-range or most low-end keyboards do have the MIDI port ... and those that don't have it, can still be used with mixers to make really fine music! :-)
@@dadautube I agree with your assessment, just two things, the wk1600 isn't more advanced than the Wk 500 as the WK 1600 was released nearly 4 years prior, it just happens to have more features than the 500, the wk6600 however, is definitely more advanced because it was made a decade after the 500, and when I say pro stuff I'm talking about the Kurzweils, motifs, Triton's and nords of the world
This is what I have #Gearfacts
Great keyboard :) #gearfacts
Can it be used as midi keyboard in Fl Studio or Cubase?
I've never tried it, but if you have a midi-USB adapter it should work.
@@gearfacts Well I've the same as yours but it didn't work out iin FL or cubase 😞
I used it to control the piano roll in FL studio. Its solid in that dept.
Thanks for the video, I managed to get my hands on one of these i haven't bought it yet but it will arrive on Wednesday so i managed to get it for 50 usd do you think thats a good price. I know nothing about orgs but i wanted to learn.
