  • I have a couple of Sony SL-C40ES Betamax VCRs which I want to repair, both have the same fault, I try to put a tape in, the tape won't go right in and gets pushed out. One of them however tried to load the tape but loaded extremely slowly and only part way. I read on the PALsite on this page www.palsite.com/slc40tech.html the fault is likely the loading gear or arm or something related, but unfortunately without pictorials with the instructions to repair them faults I am not sure where to find the parts to repair so here's my video asking for help on repairing these decks. I need step by step instructions and photos of the parts of the loading mechanism I need to work on or scans from the service manual on this particular fault or even better a demo video on fixing this fault. Anyone who can help me out can contact me at ac_dc_rocks@hotmail.com , any help will be much appreciated.

I have the same problem with my SL-C30E I bought from used market (the mono sibling of SL-C40), and seems that cleaning switch contacts can be a great solution! Will locate the switch and more thing I should fix on my VCR soon.
PS: take note that there is no Betamax specialist in Indonesia due to how Indonesians treat old technologies

The first Sony machine has the famous dirty cassette-in switch problem. When you push the tape in, you can hear a click. That's the switch that closes the circuit to power up the loading motor to move the cassette carriage down. You need to take the switch apart and clean the contacts.

TapesNstuffS I ended up sending the better VCR to a Betamax specialist in Melbourne, he fixed everything but there were a whole series of problems, can't remember the details, it costed me $150 to get them fixed, was worth it in the end as it works great now!

Anyways it's working good and is now my workhorse machine for transferring beta tapes :)

I would first find a service manual for this unit. I think the SL-C30 or the SL-C9 has the same tape carriage unit as the SL-C40. You can find these manuals on eserviceinfo(dot)com. Good luck
