I grew up with Allen Iverson.
The apartments we lived in had about a 2 mile stretch of road named Garden Dr. running right through the middle of it. I lived on one end, Bubbachuck, as he was known then, lived on the other.
Chuck would start at one end of Garden Dr. and practice dribbling the ball between his legs. With each step he took, he bounced the ball through, and if he messed up once, he started over from the beginning of Garden Dr. until he could go up and down the roughly 2 miles perfectly.
He would do that for hours. Every day. From around about 9 years old until he moved away when he was around 12.
Most days it would just be him out there and me watching from my usual spot sitting on the sidewalk in awe. I was about 4 years younger than him and he was very territorial, so we didn't have many meaningful interactions other than him sneering at me to get out of the way or to stop sitting on his porch staring at him and not talking, but I didn't care.
I had no idea that I was watching a future global superstar (this was '86 - '90 ish), but I instinctively knew that I was gaining valuable insight on just how much hard work it takes to be great at something, so I'd better pay attention.
    Thanks, Chuck.

Thank you sooooooooooooooooo much for this true factual story! People love to undermine the effort and hard work put in to reach to the top! All while an amateur when these chumps speaking on his lifestyle yet was not there from “gate”! A.I. more than lived up to expectations but he wasn't always on a title contender (especially in Philly).
So I guess that his rationale was that win or lose, as long as he played well, he could live the results.
Also A.I. was on the floor A LOT, he's 4th All-Time in MPG and played over 40 Minutes a night for most of his career. I don't think that anyone can blame him for wanting or even needing to decompress.

When Allen Iverson stepped on the court he was a worker that put in overtime by throwing away any regard for his body to win!! I love what Gilbert brought to the league with his game but he and especially DJ, weren't on A.I.'s caliber. Allen Iverson wasn't the person who teammates didn't want to pass the ball to and mixing Dontay mixing in that he never so him work and saying he didn't know if he really worked and could've been better is poor taste. Don't praise and try to cast indirect slights for content purposes man. A.I. loved the game and anyone that watched him play could see this!! The likes of Kobe and Shaq both hold him in high regard. From what he said AI asked him what time he'll be in the gym, he told him 11. AI most likely went to the gym at different hours, but even if he didn't. I can assure you he worked on his game way more productively throughout his career than the bums complaining about him off the court and in non-game situations. You don't get better by being jealous, of someone else's success. You only get jealous after you've hit your ceiling and becoming as good as someone like AI is no longer in reach. This is a game, and in this game the best person wins naturally once the horn sounds, and afterwards you go live your life. And that's what Iverson did. Being an NBA player isn't a everyday job, that's for people who really aren't that good and seek to be. Its about who's the best on the court on four quarters. And Iverson is the best, he failed to obtain rings based on the true structure of that league. Not his committal.
