Color Grading in DaVinci Resolve is Easy with Phantom LUTs

- In this video we're looking at my all time favorite LUTs to use when color grading in DaVinci Resolve. They are the Phantom LUTs by Joel Famularo, and these are an absolutely key part in my editing workflow. I use them for my Sony FX30, a6400, iPhone 15 Pro, and pretty much any other camera I ever edit footage from.

Just thought i'd share this as a phantom lut user. 1st they are incredible! 2. Joel Famulero the creator of Phantom Luts says it's best to "expose to the middle." if you know what i mean.
Yeah, he mentions they work perfectly fine if you expose to a "what you see is what you get" method but in the Read me for the packs he does also mention you're fine to overexpose them a bit to then bring down in post and get cleaner shadows, which is what I like doing. That said, in general they are pretty versatile and even work well for underexposed images 🙂
Oh seen. Thanks. Subbed by the way
You (and a couple of other videos) made me take a gamble on Phantom Luts for VLOG. Speaking as someone who just wants good looking footage without spending hours tweaking complex node trees, these packs are a slam dunk. Thanks!
Happy to hear they've been working well for you!
Can show us your settings in davinci color management?
I also want to know
Love it. Simple adjustments = wonderful results.
Great video! Flicking back and forth between the phantom LUT and the alternative really helped to clearly show their differences 👍
Happy to hear you found it helpful!
Thank you George, got the Panasonic Phantom Luts pack. Your discount code worked perfect ☺
Thank you for supporting the channel! Hope these end up being useful 🙂
Awesome video with lots of practical examples!
Thanks! Glad you liked it :)
Ау, супер много се радвам, че открих този канал! Най накрая някой от който да черпя знания, "локално" :) +1 съб :)
I see George's video - i put like right away 👍
Appreciate the support 🙂
Thank you GK! That was helpful!
Happy to hear 🙂
looks good good
why do you choose to do sat and contrast after lut vs before lut?
Gonna be completely honest, that's just how I set it up in these examples but sometimes I'll do it before the lut too 😅 I am by no means a pro colorist so there's a high chance that my node order might not always be optimal 😁
I have a question, Do you use the same LUTS in Davinci as your Monitoring LUT for your External Monitor and Camera??. Amazing Video🔥 by the way...Thank for sharing this video.🙏
Yes, I've got the same luts loaded on my external monitor and use them when filming to have an idea of how everything will look once I start grading after. They work great for that. Also have them loaded into my FX30 and in my iPhone 15
Thank you George, great work here. Any reason why you apply the contrast curve after the LUT and not before? Thanks
Honestly, kind of like with the saturation node, I just added the curve to a node after the LUT just for this example. I'd usually mess with the curves directly in the same node as where I do the HDR exposure adjustments, which would be before the LUT. But in these examples I wanted to have it on a separate node to enable it on its own as I'm explaining and I just kind of added it after that without really thinking. In general though, it's good practice to do most adjustments before LUTs or a CST, so good thing you pointed that out 😅
Would like to see u do a tutorial grading Mavic3 Dlog and DlogM using these Luts before I buy them. The frustration with DJI is the fact they haven’t giving Blackmagic Design the Camera log profile information so we can grade Dlog or Dlog M in Color management or CST.So would love to see u grade Mavic 3 pro Dlog and Dlog M please
Unfortunately I don't own a Mavic 3 and don't have any available footage from one, but I'm pretty sure you can find graded images on the Instagram page for Phantom LUTs. In general though, they're designed super well so I'm confident that the version for the Mavic 3 would also work great.
When you shoot with a6400, do you use s-log2 or 3? I’m thinking of getting an Arri version of these luts for my a7iii. Are these film or arri version of phantom luts? Great vid btw!
On the a6400 I shoot in s-log2 + sgamut3.cine. The versions I showed in this video were the Arri LUTS.
I want to know what you recorded the sound with on this clip. Your voice has a great depth and presence
The intro talking head part was recorded with my Movo VXR10 Pro, which I have linked in the description. The screen recording part was using the Fifine AM8 and I used GeForce Experience to record my screen.
I have two questions, 1: do you edit in da Vinci wide gamut intermediate and 2: I’ve been using the phantom luts as my CST but I’m confused whether or not to add a creative grade before or after the phantom lut node. Any insight? Thanks!
For the first one, no, I don't use DaVinci Wide Gamut Intermediate. I just stick to Rec709, Gamma 2.4. For the second one - I personally also use them as a CST and tend to add any creative grading after the LUT node. The things I do before the Phantom LUTs are white balance and exposure adjustments. Most of everything else is done after them. At least that's how I approach it but I'm also not that great at color grading so take it with a grain of salt :)
Have found Phantom LUTs useful for 8 bit cameras like the A6400? Do you think slog2 is a viable option for these cameras?
Absolutely. Some of the clips I showed in this video were exactly in 8 bit from an a6400. And slog2 is more than capable enough as long as you expose correctly and plan for how you're going to color grade while filming. The a6400 with slog2 is much more capable than people might think.
Здравей! Имам въпрос, каква е причината да полздваш ноуд за промяна в контраста (и понякога други корекции) след като си ползвал ноуд с лът? Поздрави!
So you don't have to go from Cineon, to apply the LUT?
@@PawFromTheBroons No, with these ones you don't. Cineon is when you're gonna be using the built in Resolve film LUTs
@@georgekamenov_ Thanks for the clarification
This is so helpful! But can u use this on a neutral shoot? Not using slog?
As far as I know, no. These have a color space conversion built into them and they're meant to be used with different Log formats on different cameras. If you used them on a normal shot that was just filmed in a standard picture profile, you're going to get a very bad looking image because the LUTs will be trying to convert footage that's in the wrong color space relative to what they are expecting as an input.
Also have fx30, do you have any recommendations with not using slog to get the best colour possible, is there any special luts etc thanks
I can’t find the phantom Luts for Sony A7iii, what’s your recommendation. Great video thanks
You would probably want to pick up the ones for the Sony FS7 and Alpha Series (Pre A7SIII). Those are the ones meant for the A7III :)
@@georgekamenov_ thank you a lot!
Can you also review the buttery luts? They seem to be made for the same purpose.
I'll look into them but no promises. Honestly, Phantom LUTs do pretty much everything I need them to and I'm not sure if I really need to have any other conversion luts that I barely use 😅
@@georgekamenov_ Just for review purposes of course - maybe some kind of a comparison. I believe the buttery luts are also cheaper.
hey bro, what about the exposure and the grain? do you use de +1.7 or 0.0 ?
I do expose brighter almost every time but not always by a specific amount like +1.7 or whatever. Just brighter than I want the clip to be later.
why do you sometimes use temp (e.g. 10:37) and other times offset?
I usually prefer using the offset when fixing white balance and temp./tint when it's for smaller adjustments like making the image a touch warmer. But in general my go to is almost always the offset wheel.
What are you colour management settings?
DaVinci YRGB, Rec. 709, Gamma 2.4.
@@georgekamenov_ Thank you! Just bought the luts. Looking real good.
Hi do you know how to import project from Cyberlino Power Director to Resolve?
Sorry, never used that so I have no idea 😕
Is there a reason you are using the FX6 version of the lut?
On the phantom luts website it says that the fx6 version matches the fx30 best due to how the sensor captures images. There's no specific set for the fx30 but some sets of LUTs are applicable to a few camera models at the same time 🙂
@@georgekamenov_Thank you for the answer!
Discount code isn't working for me 😭
Huh, weird, I'll look into it
