- Psychologist Prof Kevin Dutton from Oxford University is bringing us insight into the mind of the 'Psychopath'. Interestingly linked to films and other media. However we need to consider that Psychopathic behaviour is not technically 'insane'.. in other words different from what we might call 'psychotic'. Also the term Narcissist is not used, when in fact many of the behaviours discussed are actually part of the NPD spectrum.
She (the female lawyer) says: "I hope you will show me some kind of compassion, once you get to know a psychopath." - but just minutes before she tells us she has no compassion what so ever for any human beings, and feels no empathy.
That, is spot on how a psychopath manipulates normal human beings.
Why would I be compelled to give her anything, when she clearly doesn't care about others ?

Amazing that she was revealed by her own parents, as it's normally hard to think bad of ones own children. But, she maybe right about being more of a sociopath, since one main difference is that they are born this way, while psychopaths are result of environment.
@@perspellman: You got it the wrong way around. A psychopath is born whereas a sociopath is made. Society has mistreated them badly and they become angry and bitter about their social circumstances - hence Socio (social) path.
A psychopath is born with having no link to their emotions and thus feel nothing and thus have no empathy and never will. A sociopath, on the other hand, does have emotions and has developed psychopathic behavior. In my opinion, a sociopath is more dangerous on a personal level because they have passion behind their actions thus can act out of revenge. A pure psychopath would view revenge as a waste of time and effort. A crocodile or a shark do not take attacks on them as personal but would simply defend themselves as a way of survival.

The best. Normally it's all about serial killers or hard criminals of some kind. This film is much more about the problems psychopaths create in daily life.

It's a pop psychology term used by Hollywood and television but there is no such diagnosis in real life. Oh and then they have an FBI Profiler on the show. Profiling is a complete myth that doesn't work. For every time they get something right, there are ten things they get wrong, and cases are often hindered because they're so far off. They refuse to allow scientific study because they don't want the truth to be discovered. So ... I guess if you like documentaries about non-existent personality traits, discussed by members of a mythical profession which has no basis in reality, then ... yes ... this is a very good show.
@@philsurtees Thank you for this BS. Psychopathy and Sociopathy are definitions of certain personalty disorders and absolutely medical diagnoses. These therms may be popular versions, but don't tell me that such people don't exist, persons who lack empathy, remorse and have a narcissistic view of the world. I have met several of them, with different degrees, all basically intelligent, but manipulating and also dangerous if crossed. Believe me, the ones I've experienced were not documentaries on UA-cam. These people often seek power and position in their society and the hierarchy of their environment, and the higher you go, the more of them you'll find. That's no myth or pop psychology, but painfully real.

46:30 in a crisis the professor would totally want high scorers ( in the psychopaths test) to handle his money or his problem, because he thinks high scorers on the psychopaths scale are better risk takers and therefore problem solvers. The problem with your thought, dear professor, is that you think they would act in your interest, and that's exactly what is NOT going to happen. I have been studying the subject of psychopathy for many years now since I first saw the movie "Silence of the Lambs" , seeing Anthony again with the subtitles I missed before , for me it was more intense to see him act as a psychopath , it's a much much more convincing and disturbing role he plays here..
But at the same time he was clearly salivating over her potential vulnerability
Notice how naturally swift and perfectly the “eyeball killer” turned the tables when asked if removing a human eyeball is difficult. He refracts all responsibility by simply stating “I would imagine it would be”. The entire phrase pinpoints how easy it was for him to not only avoid admission of guilt by saying “It’s not” or “for me” etc., but he easily detected the trap the interviewer set up for him multiple times during the interview. Very interesting and typical of the common psychopath, especially for one who doesn’t care at all.
Bravery is certainly not exclusive to psychopaths.

It's not that they are brave, it's that they operate unaffected by the highly stressful nature of a situation that would normally require bravery.
The best definition of bravery that i'm aware of is that bravery is not to act without fear but to act regardless of fear, so if a psychopath is not capable of fear then nothing they do can be described as brave.
I would argue in fact that psychopaths as well as most narcissists/sociopaths CAN'T be brave at all.
In order to be brave, you HAVE to have fear.
Bravery means doing something extreme despite feeling fear and anxiety and all the other emotions people fear when faced with a dangerous situation, but, the brave ones among us PUSH through this fear and do the brave thing anyway.
If you do not feel fear and anxiety you literally can't BE brave because the prerequisite doesn't exist.
Psychopaths can absoultely DO a very brave thing, but they can't never BE a brave individual.
The fact that they got him to promote their show is hilarious and chilling at the same time.

Except you probably didn't. Millions of women watch a single documentary about psychopathy and then are magically able to suddenly diagnose someone they know as a psychopath, but what's more often the case is that the person simply doesn't like them.
"I didn't do anything wrong" is a thought that most women carry with them their entire lives, no matter what evil things they've done, so they really struggle to understand when someone holds resentment or bitterness towards them for any length of time.
A female will *always* assume the fault is elsewhere. That there is, or must be, something wrong with the other person. Even if she apologizes, the apology is only a strategy to attempt to quell the situation. Bring the topic/incident up two years later during an argument to find out who she *actually* blames.
Pro-tip: It won't be herself.
Now maybe the person you encountered was a psychopath - it's possible, there are a lot of them - but, judging from the first nine words you wrote, combined with the contents of your profile, I'd suggest it very unlikely indeed.

When the mother speaks of that look in her sons eyes at 1:17:36 !! That was the look my ex gave me. It was a combination of looking through me.....dead....and pure evil, all wrapped into one. I have never seen anything so frightening in my 58 years on this planet. I doubt I ever will again, either. While I was trying to explain how his actions had hurt me, he just sat there staring. Clockwork Orange didn't get it wrong at all! The main character was never bothered by the images, but rather the poison they were giving him. And he was bothered by the fact that Beethoven was becoming associated with it. This is a great documentary but that needs to be cleared up.

I ran into 2 women in a long career in sales that I think were definitely psychopaths. Unfortunately for me, I ran into the cross hairs of both of these women. It seemed to me that they were both trying to show that they could be just as cold and hard as a man in the business world. However, most of the really nice CEO's and such that I've met have the ability to make you feel that you are the most important person in the world. And they mean it. If they don't mean it, they will stab you in the back as a true psychopath would do. I didn't recognize that both these women had no qualms with ruining me personally and professionally. That was my bad. I even stood up for one of the women and said she should get a raise. She later accused me of stealing accounts and all kinds of terrible things. Watch out for them. They're out there.

In the books, Bond wasn't a psychopath and was haunted by the murder by drowning, questioning the ethics of the secret service. He's quite a disillusioned and well-written character. The movie Bond is simply a psychopathic hitman.

The professor wanted to be right, and he knew that the guy and the girl were actually proud of being who they are so he encouraged and, what's more important, manipulated their ego for his study to be successful. This girl perhaps is a psychopath (most likely not a killer but future banker or someone else's cruel boss as she almost changed her mind), but because her ego was challenged so there was no way to feel shame on that simple task. I'm a great empath but I could do what she did, in fact if my ego was challenged it would give me extra bravery trait.
You have made a good point because the outcoms of his study was actually manipulated in favour of being him right, rather than seeking an objective result. Which in turn, the professor could have narcissistic nature - don't like to be wrong.

I have taken it many times and many different ways and always score high and scored high enough it cought the eye of my dr when i got a new dr for my adhd meds.

When you think about it Peter Pan was a psychopath and Wendy was his enabler. She was going to take care of him and the boys but no one helped her. Rather than than help her he let her go home and never expressed that he cared about her. Unfortunately for me I turned out to be the Wendy to my husband’s Peter, his son’s Peter and to his two very dangerous grandsons. I saw myself as a failure for years because I couldn’t help them, fix them. Therapy and good friends helped me to see there was no cure for them but there was a cure for me. The weight and guilt lifted off my shoulders was immense. Now I don’t live for them I live for me.
In Clockwork Orange the lead character has a treatment which makes him violently ill when seeing violent images- the Doctors in the story did something to him, he didn’t have a natural aversion to seeing violence.

Bringing movies into this subject doesn't educate people. Too much fantasy driven information. More interviews with actual psychopaths and less melodramatics.
I would actually like to see more documentaries about the "normal Joe" psychopath. The ones who use ordinary people as their means to an end. What do they look for when they target someone? What are the tactics they use to draw people in? What are their responses when you call them out on their deception?? Movie characters and serial killers aren't what everyday people need to be on the lookout for.
Agreed. Many depicitions aren't that realistic imo and some people believe too much what they see on TV. You want your more typical psychopath, I'd take Begbie from Trainspotting or John the Rat from Weekender.
Using film is actually a great way to show how we accept and hold many psychopathic characters in high regard, yet fear anyone in our community that have psychopathy. I actually find that part to be rather interesting regarding the matter.

I've read the book Jekyl and Hyde, so.I have quite a penchant for the dark side.
empathy is a learned/acquired emotion. empathy is not an innate emotion.
there is a must sequence to learn empathy:
1. relate/care/like the person.
2. mirror the person feelings in your mind.
3. wear/evoke the other person feelings, in yourself.
empathy is too complex to be innate feeling.
I guess that a good parent would train/teach his child empathy.
a neglectful parent that ignore his child's feelings, would inhibit psychopathic behaviour.

The Gordon Gecko "greed is good" phenomenon also happened here in the UK in the 1980's. When the USA had Ronald Reagan, we in the UK had Margaret Thatcher. Traditionally Europe, including the UK, is a lot less conservative right wing than the USA, but directly before that era we had had rampant socialism. We were ready for a change.
Some creatures named "yuppies" were born. It was a new echelon in society. They were mostly young, worked in city banks and traded in shares (I think). They were also characterised by being openly materialistic, greedy, selfish and self-satisfield. That is morally abhorrent to us normally, yet Margaret Thatcher divided our society against itself, by appealing to the selfish greed of various sectors of society. The zeitgeist of the time was that selfish ambition and greed are good and the weak and poor are collateral damage.

Interesting when someone dismisses guns for being quick. Did you know that they leave a bloody mist, the smell of gunpowder, shattered bones, and if properly done the victims can also enjoy the emotions of fear, hatred and lust that you felt but they may not find as much enjoyment that you did
Excellent documentary except for the reference to Clockwork Orange. The fact is that the character loved the violence in the treatment but when the music of Beethoven was played it was inappropriate. His version of psychopathy was spot on after all as demonstrated by the ending

@Tewdy Quew I know a few psychopaths who claim to be sociopaths, maybe they're the same I don't know but they are very dynamic intelligent high-functioning sickos. They don't leave behind any people who commit suicide in go crazy, at least not the ones I know. They I'm more like the Jim Jones type who have a week mostly women following them like sheep to the slaughter oh, but there is no slaughter just emotional ickiness They give me the absolute creeps I can smell them coming
