Predator 420cc Performance Mods!

  • Опубліковано 18 сер 2017
  • In this video I show you how do do a number of performance modifications to the Predator 420cc engine. This engine is rated for 13hp stock, and after these simple mods it should put out about 20hp, but that's just a guess.
    This video is longer and more tedious than my usual videos, but I tried to provide as much information as I could regarding these upgrades.
    Times:
    gas tank------------0:27
    exhaust-------------1:00
    intake----------------1:26
    carb jet--------------7:25
    governor------------8:30
    low oil sensor---13:59
    throttle linkage-15:43
    valve springs----17:06

    Tip: put grease on your tap then it will both lubricate the threads being cut and the grease will hold 99% of the shavings too.

    Best DIY video I have ever watched. Not just showing how to do something, but also explaining exactly what everything is. I learned in this one video everything I had questions about. Anyone who is looking to mod a 212 or 420 should watch this video before even looking at a screw driver or drill. Thank you, sir!

    Get yourself a valve spring tool and save yourself potentially serious injury with either the spring or retainers shooting up into your face, or the vice grips pinching the devil out of your thumb. You can also save a fishing expedition into the crankcase for the retainers that way as well.
    You can also get a truck brake spring driver (used on drum brake barrel shaped springs that hold the shoes to the backing plate.) It has a screwdriver handle and shank with an open ring at the end that compresses the spring as you push down, while allowing you to rotate the retainers. The retainer tool for trucks should be the right diameter to cup the spring and the retainer cup on top of your valves so you can place the retainers in the cup and stem of the valve.

    Watching you using that vice-grip to push down on the spring, I just was waiting to cringe when it slipped and either smashed your finger or sent the vice-grips into your face, glad it all went good!

    • @ronfullerton3162
      @ronfullerton3162 4 роки тому

      @@TrapperAaron It is true all the modifications he is doing to this motor can decrease engine life. But he stated that he is doing this for performance, and mods made for more power are always at the risk of less engine life. He also explained the reason for disconnection of the low oil sensor. It is at one side of the block, and a hard corner will, through centrifugal force, throw the oil away from the sensor and kill the power. These motors are made for stationary use and steady power demand, totally different from what he is preparing this engine for. And if he does not realize this can shorten engine life, he will soon learn.

    The filter I bought came with the adapter and a hold down for the choke, the spacer (I bought separate) had the correct holes in it. Also came with a bigger jet...I can't recommend using the bigger jet , the engine runs better and comes off of choke faster with the OEM jet it came with.

    [ On the choke lever ] i drilled a small hole in the lever like you would for a screw. Then i made a few grooves angled downward in the shaft. I mixed up a little JB Weld ,fingered it into the shaft grooves then shot some into the lever with a crack filler syringe. When i pushed the lever down some epoxy came out the top hole and i finger molded it over like a little cap. that was 10 yrs ago and it's still on there. PS i used my dremel for the grooves.. I knew if i tried to drill and tap that shaft i would F#%k it up..lol

      I know this is an old comment but I was thinking the exact same thing, just remove the governor arm and call it done, also just unplug the oil level sensor wire on the outside. Loads of extra non value added steps. We'll not mention the valve clearance on the exhaust port is normally more than the intake as it runs hotter and expands more, so his original clearance was fine.

    If you’re worried about not being able to get all the backer rod (sponge thingy) out of the cylinder, you can use an air hose fitting to screw it into the spark plug hole and apply 100psi air to hold the valves in place. I’ve done this multiple times when replacing valves springs on Chevy LS motors while it’s still in the truck. This was a great video, and I doubt you’ve put it on a dyno to see the power increase, but do you have any idea how much power increase you got, or how high you can rev the rpm’s?? I know the factory governor had it at 3600 rpm’s.

    • @KOSFishey
      @KOSFishey 5 років тому +2

      You can change the jet without making a single change to the emulsion tube. The tube depends largely on what exact motor it is and what carb but the jet will have a large impact on the amount of fuel going into the motor with any emulsion tube. The stock emulsion tube makes great power with a different jet on our 25hp/30ft-lbs kart racing motors. This can be moddified so the amount of fuel is more consistent leading to a flatter Air Fuel Ratio curve.

    An allen head cap screw would look sharp plugging the governor rod hole.

    Hello, great vid. Very helpful info. Where can I get upgrade valve springs? I have a 16 hp single cylinder like your one but I can't seem to find any. Do you think the 35 lb springs would work for this engine too?
    Thank you for your time.

    $12 at Harbor freight. Works great. Less filling. 🏁

    It honestly pays to get a maikuni instead of a carb jet kit.

      Agree w u 100% randomly drilling out jet to whatever size does not fly on a 4 barrel Holley, i dont think this would start and if it did run id say wouldnt run for long, and would definitely have less power than stock.

      @@TrapperAaron No the jetting and intake is definitely better than stock as I have ran an engine with this configuration with good success on a gokart, but as far as a cost benefit equation goes, a mikuni will be a bit more expensive, but the performance gain is much better. In fairness he machined his own fitting so my argument isn't as strong but if he had to buy one, yeah mikuni.

      @@ssplintergirl The Mikuni would be a far better way to go, just more expensive dollar wise, but could pay off later.
