On our pursuit of finding cheap and interesting PlayStation accessories, it's time we shop for some controllers. And unsurprisingly, eBay has a wide array of cheap PS4 and PS3 controllers! And some of them 'claim' to be genuine Dualshocks from Sony... Hmmm. Is it too good to be true? I mean yeah totally. So let's review all my purchases, and help you differentiate the real ones from the fakes. (Also some of these are just straight up weird).

I bought a dualshock 4 ps4 controller and it was a fake one, he wasnt giving me a refund so i put "scammer" in his negative review and he said keep the controller and il refund you if you call ebay and take down the review lmao

i dont know why people do this, leave a negative review before getting their money back. 10/10 times ebay will side with the buyer, which can be a pain as a legit seller dealing with airhead buyers, but i take waaay more chances as a buyer. legit sellers are way more likely to get ripped off than a buyer ever will.

I’ve always had a soft spot for those clear controllers as i used to have the Xbox original crystal controller, I loved seeing the mechanics inside the controller work it’s magic.

This is the one thing I refuse the cheap out on, they put official controllers on sale pretty often and you know 100% what you are getting.

@@dantevic Damn. Guess I should keep the 2 I do have clean and proper for whenever I go play my ps3 again. They're terrible controllers though. I went through 4 with my 7 years of playing on ps3, and I was constantly cleaning gunk off of them. I bought a pre-owned ps4 in 2016 and the controller they gave me still works like a charm and it stays so clean compared to Dualshock 3s. Shining a light on it now and it is pretty dirty lol, but I've never even cleaned it once.
@@gummibear696 yea it sucks as sony have stop making them. The only way to get them now is if you can get a new ps3 to buy or a used one that comes with the og controllers. I see amazon has the fat ps3 for $1000+ (third party resellers)

3:56 I KNEW you were about to refer to the over resistance on the sticks, ive tried random third party controllers before (mostly for curiosity) and the 2 biggest things for me were always the high resistance sticks and the unplayable set deadzone. Also some wouldn't register multiple buttons presses in a row or require an odd amount of force to activate.
I rocked one of those glows controllers when I had my PS3 back in the day. That thing lasted me forever. The DPAD sucks but with the type of games I play I rarely use the dpad unless it’s for menus or certain mechanics. I almost wanna get one again

Great video! I usually stick with legit controllers and stay away from those type of controllers you feature in your video. Thanks for showing what’s out there in regard to cheap controllers.
To tell if a DS3 is fake, plug it into a wall outlet and if it doesn't charge, its real. Also try test it in safe mode as Sony requires you use the official controller.

I remember my older brother having a wireless Afterglow light up blue controller for his PS3 and I really enjoyed the feel of it surprisingly. Honestly it's the best 3rd party controller I've held. (But I haven't held many so I'm sure there are better ones.)

That berry colored ps4 controller was very tempting when I saw it on ebay. That one in particular, I know a bunch of people bought it cause those colors are sick. If only Sony did official color schemes like that and didn't bump the price too much.
Afterglow was epic for PS3 I remember how comfortable it was in online PvZ.

Thank you for this, I've been struggling finding detailed videos on these cheap controllers. I would just buy an official DS3, but they have almost no durability and always break sooner than you want.
That PDP controller is a hidden gem. I bought one for my ps2 and it is still awesome

The analog sticks are all inaccurate with huge dead zones on the knockoff Dual shocks.
Not to mention the build quality of the analog sticks is also trash
The gold DualShock 4 I had the exact same model. Same price and I always wondered why my controller was bugging out. PCI on Mlb the show would constantly shake. Randomly my trigger buttons would input into the game even though I’m not touching them.

There are tons of these videos, all conclude the same.... a decent 3rd party controller is very rare. Offiicial are too expensive, but do work very well...

Question, do the shells of these controllers fit with the actual DS4? It would be great to make some custom controllers without throwing the whole thing away. That top part of the "doubleshock" controller and that diamond-like controller look sick.

Haha this was a fun watch. As I understand nearly all “new” DS3s are knockoffs at this point. The best bet is to check retailers who low key sell video games. I’ve seen legit NIB DS3s in Kohl’s stores. Most of the time they’re shoved behind other items in locked display cases in the gaming section of the store. Unfortunately they usually retail for their original MSRP too.
Used to use the afterglow one on ps3 with Bluetooth instead of wired and it was a good controller
The “wireless controller” at 3:00 is actually really decent for racing/action and adventure games. Not so much fps titles, but I use it all the time for NFS and GTA V. It’s not bad for the price

Do you have any tips on where to find good replacement dualshock 3 controllers? It's difficult finding oems in my area and even the local enthusiast shops sell bad 'refurbished' dualshock 3s that don't work as intended. I've been trying to play Folklore which requires sixaxis, but as it stands now I don't think I'll ever beat it.

Yeah Mystic, that's fine and dandy if you need a PS4 controller, as you can still buy those. But if you're still on a PS3, like my broke ass, then you're screwed if you want a NEW PS3 controller. Cos you don't know what you're getting if you pick up a real, but used one. I bought one from GameStop, and the base of the left stick, had broken, and been glued back together. Another thing to consider, is that you don't know how much life is left in the battery of a used original controller. If you get a brand new one, you know it's gonna last you a few years.

Just some tips I wanna add.
For PS4 controllers, I found that the lighting doesn’t change in the fake controller during the game where it supposed to change compared to the original PS4 controller which seamlessly change its lighting during the game. That the way I figure out whether it’s fake or not without pulling it apart. Of course, you could take the easy way and get a bunch screwdrivers to help ya out.
I almost bought one of the gold ones off ebay as I thought they were a bargain and genuine. Glad I watched this first

The afterglow controller around 7:00 has a wireless variant which requires you to plug a usb into the ps3 for it to connect. I had one and i honestly enjoyed it.
I remember having a Afterglow AP2. My brother broke it after 2 years of having it and I still haven't forgave him.
The controllers with that bad stick resistance usually loosen up after a few days of use. It happened to my Afterglow 360 controller. Unfortunately that means you still need to put up with it for that long.

One can never have too many Dualshocks! I’ve got about 10 official DS4’s in various colors myself.
I never buy controllers online, i've been burned many times with cheap knockoffs and fakes.
In UK I bought Red and white official DS4 V2 each £29.99

Not sure why people underrate this. It must be a hit or miss kinda thing because I ordered I replica and had such a good experience that I'm getting 2 more . UPDATE: 2 REPLICAS CAME AND THERE ARE BEYOND PERFECT. SUCKS THAT PEOPLE ARE SO CLOSED MINDED AND THINK EVERYTHING HAS TO HAVE A LOGO JUST FOR IT TO WORK PERFECTLY. ITS LITERALLY A SONY CONTROLLER WITHOUT THE SONY LOGO. THAT'S ALL IT IS.

The Glowy Controler for the PS3 that you showed in the video reminds me of the 'Rock Candy' Controllers that were sold everywhere for PS3 and Game Cube, I think Xbox 360 had some too, but I never laid my eyes on a 360 Rock Candy Controller.

The real question is: Where is possible to get a new OEM (and real) Dualshock 3 or which is the best replacement option?
You can't get an official new Dualshock 3 because there are so many fakes looking exactly the same that you are basically playing lottery trying to get a real one.
You are better off going for a decent third party controller.

Ldast Symply because I usually like to go back and play the PS3 games that I have been playing since 2007, I don't usually care about new releases for the PS4 and the Switch that I also own and still can get OEM or great 3rd party stuff.
Ebay, reputable seller and only purchase if gives front/back photos.. look all the label info on back.. it's best to look at pictures and compare them to a real one if you have one. I wouldn't buy one supposedly new in box... just too hard and can't see the back logo info. Just try to find like new and use your better judgement. If you HAVE to have new in box, Imo the safest bet are the ones that came with a game if seals still intact but $$$$$.

I bought mine for only 5$, and it's working well on my pc. It's already a year. It also has vibration. Just download the x360ce, and that software can set your keys.

All PS3 controllers you see being sold for cheap online are all FAKE. You can confirm that they are fake by installing SCP toolkit on your PC and connecting the DS3. A popup will tell if your controller is genuine or not. I have had considerable experience buying DS3s online and can say with confidence that the only place you are going to get legit ones are from Japan.

I have a O.E.M Berry blue DualShock4. And I get that exact rattle in my standard DualShock4 witch came with my PS4

I had one of those afterglow PS3 controllers back in the day (“ok boomer” comments incoming...even tho I’m gen z lol) and it was a great controller.

I got a fake PS3 controller in 2018 similar to those "official ones" but without the Sony text and a P3 on the home button (needed a controller and *really* low on money) and while it's nowhere near as good as official ones, it still holds up. It has syncing issues and the L2 button is just now becoming unresponsive. But after nearly two years it's still solid and outside of the L2 button. I'd still recommend trying to save up and getting official controllers, but don't entirely count out the knockoffs, it's a gamble absolutely but if it pays off, you got a solid controller that can at least do the job for cheap. As long as you don't rage at games and start beating on the controller (probably why the L2 trigger stopped working for me...) it still delivers the nice experience if you can handle the times the controller doesn't properly sync up, stalls out and you have to try again. They're made cheap, but you shouldn't bury them because of it, they can be actually decent
I bought a DualShock 4 from eBay it came in the real package but later on I opened it up because I wanted to repaint it and it had a much smaller battery and the motherboard along with wiring was different the only thing the same was the shell and buttons but it still worked fine the left joystick gave out but that was after about a year of heavy play from FPS games

The afterglow wireless is my preferred over the OEM controller for the PS3/PC
