How to Spot Fake PS3 Controllers, DualShock 3

- Fake PS3 Controllers are extremely hard to identify just because their extremely similar to DualShock3 Controllers made by Sony. There are plenty of fake controllers with Sony, PlayStation and all other logos almost identical to genuine wireless controllers, so there is no easy way to find out which one is fake or genuine.
In this video I'm sharing my experience with such fake controllers and how to identify the fake one without disassembly.
The software I'm using at the end of the video is SCPToolkit and can be found online, it's free.
SCPToolkit is a free Windows Driver and XInput Wrapper for Sony DualShock 3/4 Controllers.

The ultimate test and one that haven’t been replicated yet because it’s how Sony designed the controllers is that if you plug it into a wall charger the fake will charge, whereas the genuine will not.
So how to charge it if I dont have a Playstation?

If you look REALLY closely at the four colored buttons on the right, the colored shapes look printed on the button if it's fake but on the genuine ones the colored geometric shapes look inlayed into the button itself.
One of the quite decisive way to determine if one is fake is to try and hold select+psbutton together for 3-5 sec, if one light blinks rapidly, that's a fake. That fake's feature is used to connect the controller to an Android device (not sure with iphones though) which real controllers WOULD NOT do. (Older fake models may not do this tho)
You should've flipped all four! I want to see bottom labels to compare
These labels are the easiest to be faked, and some used ones may even have the label missing... for being always sure, it’s better to look for other signs
Ah I got a fake one. I noticed the font on the front part with the logo (it's too dark) and the font above the select and start buttons are a bit off. Also SCPtoolkit says I have a fake one. That's a shame, at least I didn't pay too much for it. It was odd to me when I tried to get back to the page that was selling this controller was missing, it was off ebay

It's tough to buy oem online. I have one from the SS I bought a decade ago but I'll never sell it.
Can you also do ds1 and ds2? Or just tips if not. I am planning of starting a collection but I want to make sure that what I'll buy and display is original controller. Thanks

What do you look for on the inside to spot a counterfeit?
If the motherboard has the PlayStation logo printed, most probably it’s genuine
@@YesterdaysTech Thanks for the video and reply. I just opened mine up and it has the white plastic cradle for the motors and the gray Sony LIP1359 battery, so it's not a counterfeit. I'm pretty sure the battery is bad, it didn't take any charge after being plugged into the PS3 for a couple hours. Do you know a way to force it to charge? Is the battery supposed to be perfectly rectangular? Mine seems to be bulging.
@@ferrari250lmAny lipo battery that is puffy is bad. Best to remove it and either find a good replacement or just use it wired.

and the lack of sixaxis makes some games unplayable

A lot of the fake ones are missing motion control (and rumble) functionality. I learnt this the hard way by getting some fake ones by accident, and then noticing that some functions in a game just didn't work due to a lack of motion controls. Since I got them specifically to play this game, it was quite bad news (I previously only had 3rd party (not fake) controllers, like Prif, which were also missing the feature.

Sadly yes. Best advice would be to find a used PS3 controller on your local marketplace and bring a genuine controller with you for reference.
Such a shame you can hardly find a real DS3 nowadays. :-/

The best can be to get an adaptor to play with a dual shock 4 or with a dual sense, cause the thing is, you can't know if the controller you'll get is an official or not. Anyway it seems almost impossible to find one as Sony stopped their production many years ago.

@@kanuh You have all functions wireless with a Dual Sense using the Brook Wingman SE2. I've bought one some weeks again and it's amazing. You get the six axis, vibration, etc, and it works even with old games, it's like it turns your Dual Sense into a DS3 but with a better comfort. Just be careful to choose the SE2 version, not the first one (SE). The price should be lower anyway, and the colour is black on the top and blue on the bottom part. The name says it all, SE2 is for Playstation, SB2 is for the XBox (plus it's green so it's easy to not make a mistake). NS version is (obviously) for the Nintendo Switch version.

Another way to tell whether or not you have a genuine or fake DualShock 3 controller is when you hook it up to a Windows PC via USB the devices name of the genuine/real DS3 within the control panel ->devices and printers should read as “PLAYSTATION(R) 3 Controller” as opposed to a DS3 which’ll as "PS3 GamePad”. 🖥️🔌🎮

@@absentary9219 No he does not do this in the video... Although I guess scp toolkit might use the same approach to detect if the controller is original or not. But using the control panel -> devices way does not require you to install any 3p apps, so it's a more straightforward way of confirming

Is Scp toolkit safe? If I connect the controller to it will I be able to connect to the PS3 again? And can I connect the controller to different computers?
It's safe, it only recognize the controller on the PC you're using it. You can connect it to any other device

It will instantly connect it to the PS3 even without re-pairing

Does the sixaxis feature work on fake controllers?
Fake controllers are not all made by the same brand. Some do have sixasis, and some don't have sixasis, some replicas are very well made and they also have great battery and some are absolutely horrible. I recommend a genuine controller just because it delivers a standard quality as it is marketed

The back label is the most easy to fake, there are lower chances to discover a fake looking at the label
@@YesterdaysTech Thats not true. The back label has many ways to tell its a fake if you know where to look. I've just discovered a fake by looking at the voltage in the back label, it read 3.7v 500ma when it can only say 3.7v 300ma or 5v 500ma.
300ma vs 500ma is the difference between versions, the first Dualshock 3 versions had only 300ma and later models had 500ma. This has nothing to do about finding out a fake model. There are lots of fake labels including fake warranty stickers for the console itself
@@YesterdaysTech You're not reading me properly. It says 3.7v 300ma or 5v 500ma. The fake one said 3.7v 500ma which does not exist in legit controllers.
First controllers were Sixaxis only and they were all on 3.7v. Then they added the rumble feature on later models and because of that they needed to upgrade it to 5v. If you don’t believe, I recommend to get a Mint In Sealed Box PS3 Fat from 2006 and check the back label
Does fake ps3 controller works on pc well?
Even if fake, do they support all features of the ps3? Like can they wake from sleep? Work on ps2 and ps1 games wirelessly without needing to sync after launch? If they do, i honestly wouldnt mid them being fakes they look good enough.
Most have the same or similar functionality, but the quality isn't the same. They feel awful to use, especially the analog sticks. You'd be better off with a reputable 3rd party controller.

Just got a brand new ps3 controller on ebay and mines is definitely fake. The letters and usb icon are much bolder on the fake one. The buttons seem to stick out more on the fake one and it charges when I hook it up to a wall adapter. This my second fake controller I've purchased that was advertised as "brand new" so it looks like I'll have to return this one and try getting a used original ps3 controller.

At this point I don’t know a particular store where to find a new genuine DualShock 3, but you have better chances to get an original in used condition. Look around carefully for the small details

Honestly this makes me confused, i bought second DS3 in early 10s and it has bold start & select, bigger but clearer PS button and faded square. but SCP still detected it as genuine and i never even realised it was fake until now because accuracy of sticks and triggers are fine... Sixaxis works, pressure buttons work, uses same drivers, idk anymore.
If you've got it in used condition, someone may used different parts from different controllers and assembled it, that's why may be confusing

Sixaxis does not work on fake and in XMB ( ps3 menu) you should be able to to influence movement of background particles with the real ones sixaxis
I think that I have a fake controller, the controlls go haywire every now and then also the actual moulding doesn't feel very rigid, like I could break it if I tried hard enough! I would like to test if it is genuine or fake but how do I use the scptoolkit? I have unzipped it and there are too many folders, which one is it?
As far as I remember, there should be an installer, not just something to unzip... once installed, there's always opened in Tray, as ScpToolkit Tray Notifications. Then, once you connect any DualShock 3 controller fake or not, it will show a popup in the right bottom corner telling if the controller is genuine or not
I have owned and had a fake PS3 controller for years and never even noticed it until I tried using it on PCSX2 and noticed through Nefarious's drivers said Ps3 gamepad instead of PlayStation 3 Controller like it normally would. That and the fake controller doesn't seem to have pressure sense whatsoever. I thought the pressure sense was either finicky on ps3 either the controller was just old and used another controller just to see and to my amazement I noticed the pressure sense on the next controller was how it should be, just like it was on my PS2 controllers. The problem is that some game require the more obscure functions of the ps3 controller, such as sixaxis. Some games have workarounds for this, others are required, and others won't even let you play the game without one. I don't care so much for the Sixaxis controllers as the only game I play on my ps3 has a workaround already programed in it, but I know others do. Genuine PS3 controllers are becoming difficult to find and even will fetch an upwards of 60 dollars for one since so many fakes are out there now. I think we will have to look to the boys who made the Retro Fighters Defender to fill the need since Sony themselves had dropped pressure sense in its entirety
Unfortunately the Defender PS3 controller isn’t so great either
The pressure sense has only 2 stages and there are dead zone issues also the sticks are quite a bit smaller compared to DS3

Definitely especially when you have a genuine to compare it to. They usually don't last long either since they use cheap batteries and parts.
@@ProllyNowhere_ - I had paid $65 for one several years ago on eBay that I thought was new old stock. It wasn't the common blue box but the older style clear packaging that Sony used when the fat PS3 was still being manufactured. There was no obvious mistakes or text errors so I thought it was genuine for months until the joysticks started drifting to where either the camera or character would slowly move by itself without anyone touching the controller. I opened it up with a screwdriver and sure enough it was a fake. One little detail I should've noticed was the tiny little reset button on the back had no actual button. The hole was there but was hollow and you could see through it to the inside if you shined a light on it.

All my PS3 controllers are broken. I just need a 3rd-party or fake controller to press the ps button 🤣. I usually use my PS4 controller as wired to play on PS3
It might be worth opening them up and cleaning them thoroughly.
