    The 1973 Porsche 911 2.7RS broke new ground for Porsche. It is a car of firsts: the first consumer grade car designed by the motorsports team; the first 911 with a staggered stance; the first time a fixed wing was installed at the factory (the CSL's wing came in the trunk). The success of this car, in showrooms and at race tracks, paved the way for the GT program we know today. The new 992 GT3 RS would not be here if it weren't for the 2.7RS. The Porsche GT2, GT RS, Cayman GT4, and everything wearing the "GT3" badge owe their existence and success to this 200HP duck-tailed lightweight.

      And they all went faster than American cars at the time🤷‍♂️😂
      Sadly Americans sometimes get wrapped in numbers as a dick waggling thing, yet the cars turned out are sh1t that falls apart as built on a shoe string purely to make money🤦🏼‍♂️ in the U.K. we had British leyland for that in the 70’s (mind you they made some fook ugly cars AMD they’re shit to drive also!🤷‍♂️😂)
      We all get it wrong sometimes, but Porsche rarely do as they follow the traditions of the founder….
      That’s why for my dads birthday a few years ago bought a 911 and took him to Germany to the Porsche museum, not because I’m rich at all, I sold my house to do it, but because I wanted to show him what good engineering is capable of…. Of we may have done 186mph on the autobahn whilst there but who knows it wasn’t posted online🤷‍♂️🤪😂

    Only statement that I disagree with is that a better track car (always) makes a better road car. This most definitely isn’t always the case. But, having driven a 2.7 RS, I can say that it’s the best Sunday morning backroad car I’ve driven in my life. It is closest thing I’ve ever driven to a road going go kart.

      I think you have to think about that statement of Zach considering the time. Back then normal cars were really sloppy, had horrible brakes, were underpowered and or had scary aerodynamic characteristics. So in that period the motorsports department made cars much safer and faster.
      I would even argue that real motorsports engineers would make modern cars better if you told them the right parameters (not nurburgring lap times, but lap times on a slower track for example). As matter of fact Betim from BBI said he often softens the suspension of modern GT cars for race tracks in America - I would consider that making it better on the road.

    I love his enthusiasm with the car, and he dug up a great story about birdbill in the windscreen, but I do feel there is a bit of a case of the narrative trampling on the actual history. This was not the "first time that the racing engineers came down and improved the street car". As an example I'd like to point out the various 356 Carrera models. Porsche had been doing that since I some of the ideas from the first Le Mans 356 were incorporated into updates to the production cars.

    The 2.7 RS has no downforce at all. In fact, it still has quite a bit of lift. The ducktail doesn't produce any downforce. What it does is partial 'spoil' the area of low pressure behind the car, reducing lift. Overall, the 2.7 RS still produces lift, not downforce.

    • @rossmoultrie885

    There's a reason why all air cooled low mileage manual coupes cost more than new 911's now. The early ones and 964/993 especially. They are icons and they look absolutely stunning. Sure, new ones are faster and better but they're HUGE GT-like cars that have lost the essence of 911. More reasonable, sure. Just like a chubby lady can probably cook better food than a fitness model with perfect shape. Which one would you hang around with?

    If I give a dislike i tent to explain it: the all concept of the Homologation, not sure where you took it from. Each model of any car is Homologated. Actually the homologation is what usually ruins the ideas of the engineers because they have to respect some rules. May be you wanted to say Special Homologation.Either ways, I find it misinforming.

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  Рік тому +1

      From Motor Biscuit: "The point of these (homolgation) rules was to discourage automakers from creating supercars just for racing-instead, the racing federations “wanted modified versions of normal street cars to compete.” To satisfy these rules, automakers had to produce insanely fast and powerful production cars to be able to build their racecars."
      Homologation specials mean that car companies upgrade the cars they are selling to the public in order to use that technology at the track. For example, let's say Car Company X wants to take their favorite coupe, Le Coupe, racing but they know their chassis is really flexible. Some series won't let them build 2 racecars with bespoke tube frame chassis. The rules might state that the race cars have to retain the unibody, and if Car Company X wants to race a new vehicle, they have to sell at least 500 of them to the public. Car Co. X re-engineers the Le Coupe, strengthening the unibody and making other changes. They build 500 cars, sell them to the public, and now their race car is much better than the old one. ZK
