    Nick gets some real screamers in the dyno room, and this is one to remember. Here's an engine that started as a humble 340.. but now it has been stroked out to 370 and pumped up to over 13 compression ratio. Nick has got a tank full of race fuel and he is ready to test this beast all the way up to the 'danger zone'. PLUS - inside a Sure Grip diff, AND a test drive in a classic 1970 Duster.

    Love watching your videos. My first new car was a 1970 Duster. 225 slant six automatic. With the Gold Duster package. It was white with a red top and red deluxe interior, bench seat with a center armrest. I was working for a dealer at the time. I bought it the day after Christmas 1970. The 71s were out but I opted for the 70. Got a way better deal and 1970 had the 7 70 warranty but the 71 was only 3 36. The only problem was rust, by the time the car was 5 years old the Michigan winters had taken their toll. I sold it to a neighbor with one hundred and eighty thousand miles on it. He drove it for two years and gave it to his sister when it had two hundred and fifty thousand. She drove it to Texas from Michigan. While she was in Texas they took the drive train out and put it in a rust free Texas 70 Duster. It was driven another two years in Texas then driven back to Michigan. That slant six has over three hundred thousand miles on it!

    The amazing thing about Nick's videos is they are instructional as well as entertaining. Watching a differential worked on and then a hot 340 put through its paces was fantastic. Much confidence in the engine builder to rev this pushrod engine over 7 grand. Never miss any of Nick's videos.

    •  4 роки тому

      So-called 'pushrod' engines have been cranking 7k for sixty years or more.
      Where have you been?
      You can have your overhead cams and all the top-heavy weight.
      I'll stay with my GM pushrods, thank you very much!!

    • @Australia-ky7kx
      @Australia-ky7kx 4 роки тому

      @ More to the question mate. Didn't you hear what Nick said about dangerous territory? He wasn't keen on going that high and I'd take his advice before I'd take yours. Don't kid yourself. Standard pushrod engines are not safe at high revs...ha!... sort of the reason all high performance engines these days have the cams up stairs.. You should compare the current DOHC cam Ford engine red line to the old girls. You might be living in nostalgia land I think. Go back a few videos to see what one of Nick's big rev blokes did to his Mopar. Nick has to scrap the engine as the valve train let go and the pistons ate it. He's installing a rev limiter. Any dick head can rev the engine to destruction.

    • @Australia-ky7kx
      @Australia-ky7kx 4 роки тому

      @ What you just can't grasp is any old donk can be made reliable spending a whole bunch of money with roller rockers, lightened pushrods triple valve springs, solid skirt pistons, etc etc.Why do they spend thousands? Simple answer. Physics. All these people are doing is overcoming inherent design flaws. These engines destroy themselves unless heavy modified. I raced classics here in Oz. Any old girl lasted about 10 laps. Unmodified sixes and eights sufferer a leg out of bed or smashed vale trains. You are kidding yourself that racing engines somehow support your premise that old is the best. Sure racing engines that won't idle under a thousand revs, fast and fragile for short passes down a strip is irrelevant in the modern day. Are they using pushrod engines in GP; Lemans Touring Car Championships...don't think so. Go tell Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini and domestic manufactures that push rods are the way to go. You'd be laughed off site Better still, tell em flat heads are the coming thing.. Nick doesn't take his engines much past 5. Why would that be?

    • @Australia-ky7kx
      @Australia-ky7kx 4 роки тому

      @ You ignorance of the facts is extraordinary. If you understood basic mechanics you'd know a pushrods as an inherently inefficient method for opening and closing valves. A camshaft pushes a lifter which pushes a rod, which pushes a rocker which pushes a valve...OHC dispenses with all that employing a camshaft to open and close valves. Without all that clattering of lifters rods and rockers the valve train has far less reciprocating weight. Trying to keep pushrod engines from destroying themselves was a full time job in historic racing. Modifications helped to some degree but these old girls had longer strokes which made piston speed (feet per second) dangerously high to say nothing of torsional stress where the crankshaft starts oscillating from either end, especially on six cylinder engines, leading to failure. The positioning of the valves makes it difficult to achieve good cross flow on these old designs so we have inlet and exhaust on the same side whereas DOHC permits a more efficient path. As to GM making the best pushrod engines I'll take your word for that. Of course you are biased , most likely no knowledge of other manufacturers, especially British. I have a 1972 Triumph 2000 with a cast iron pushrod engine. Never had the head off. These engines rev to six grand easily and higher when modified. A DOHC of the same capacity would go to 7 and be twice as powerful. Like a lot of one make car enthusiasts, you've allowed sentiment to paper over the facts.

    Different terminologies here in Aus, the "ring gear" is known as the ring shaped gear that shrink fits to the flywheel for the starter to engage to.
    The gear you refer to on the diff we call the "Crown Gear", the gear set being the "Crown and Pinion" gears
    And the diff with the clutch pack we call a "Limited Slip Differential"

    • @victordjinn632

      As I diversified over the years I ran into a lot of this. For example the cross-head adjustment for a Cummins becomes the rack adjustment for a Detroit Diesel. If you're looking for the rack adjustment in a Cummins manual, it isn't there, and vice versa. If you're working on an Anglia, a Prefect, a Humber or a Jaguar it's a crown gear in the diff. In an American Ford, G.M., AMC or MOPAR it's a ring gear. Why? Dunno. Just is. And then there's this one: breaker bar, flex handle, power bar, Johnson bar, all one and the same.

    • @7REDDRACO7
      @7REDDRACO7 4 роки тому +2

      yes, we still call them that here in the us also, although 'ring & pinion gear' for diff is popular to use it spread on the internet, although we call the diff gear 'ring and pinon' it is a crown gear because of the angles on it. we still call the flywheel ring a 'ring gear' but we do not call a differential rear gear a ring gear without the word pinion as well.

      DYNA KLO I know what it is, the block is a 340 and that’s why I called it that rpm is measured at the crank not piston speed, are you one of those one upper kind of dudes?😂

    • @jeffheld3971
      @jeffheld3971 4 роки тому

      DYNA KLO what’s the rod to crank stroke ratio?

    • @calebkey2050
      @calebkey2050 4 роки тому +2

      dioad What he means is that the strain seen by the 373 stroker rotating assembly at 7000rpm is similar to a 340 at 8000rpm, because the larger crank in a 373 will throw the piston faster. Piston speed itself becomes really important at these kinds of RPM’s, and usually why you will often see longer connecting rods in builds like these

    • @7REDDRACO7
      @7REDDRACO7 4 роки тому +1

      @@jeffheld3971 take the rod length divided by the stroke and you get the rod ratio. i didn't build their motor so i dont know what rod length , piston height , or even stroke for that matter, there are multiple ways of building the same cube stroker. A good rod to stroke ratio equals less cylinder wall side loading and less wear and other benefits. there is a reason Formula F1 , and race bikes use rod ratios in excess of 2:1 for example a 2:1 ratio would mean that a 3.5" stroke would have a 7" rod. or 4" stroke , an 8" rod. however this isn't always possible due to a limited deck height. check out my 571 cubic inch build it has a 1.88 rod ratio and is very durable because of it.

    I've always loved our Mopar small blocks!!! boy is this a very sweet block!!! I had a buddy in high school back in the 80s who had a built 340 in his 70 Duster and man was that engine a freaking beast!!! it was so powerful he needed to chain the engine down on the left side because when it torqued it had so much brute power it kept breaking factory engine mounts at the drag strip!!! those Mopar small blocks were always underrated!!! but this shining example right here is nothing to sneeze at for sure!!! awesome Nick and guys!!! thanks again.

Wonderful to see you and Vasili taking on an apprentice as another upcoming Mopar guy ! That engine on the dyno Nick sure sounded real sweet at idle not to mention when pulled seven thousand rpm's also. Thanks for yet another beaut start to my Tuesday morning Nick & Guys.

    For Devon & others: alternating 180 when removing bolts helps prevent any bolt from binding the ring gear (or any other part) as could happen when removing each bolt completely in circular sequence. Sometimes bolt shanks or threads can wedge against the bore of the threaded hole resulting in the binding. Or, the sequential removal of the bolts could “walk” the gear up causing the other bolts to bind - results in stripped threads or broken gear, etc. Details & precautions matter.

    Nick, you mentioned the oil pressure on the 340, now a 373, that's being dyno'd and the old standard of 10 psi for every 1000 RPM. While I would agree with you on that if you were running a standard 340 that may see 6000 RPM here and there, do take into consideration that the motor was most likely built with tighter tolerances as well as the crank and rod journals having a more precise fit. This would allow for a lower oil pressure and thinner oil which reduces drag on the motor. Too much oil pressure can rob power. Good video though and it's good to see fresh new faces that take an interest.

    Giasou Nikola,
    Good on you for giving Devon a go so someone xan continue caring for all these muscle cars in years to come.
    Between Vasili & you, you must teach him some Greek words & some Greek customs & give him a Greek nickname.
    Boy that 340 was a absolute beauty. Back in 1991, I was bringing Mopar parts in from the States to Adelaide & I had a customer who ordered & bought a set of W2 heads off me.
    Apparently they were the first set of W2 heads into Adelaide.
    Even back then the heads alone without the offset rocker gears, but with the single plane manifold was about $ 5000 which was big money back in 1991. They went on a 340 I supplied him too.
    Loge to of been in your dyno room to hear that 7000 rpm screamer.
    The other night I met a guy Felix, hi Felix he watches your channel & I met Felix because he drives the most immaculate 1965 Barracuda with the sweetest sounding 273 under his bonnet.
    Great talking to you the other morning too.

    The thing I like about the Duster is that although they weren't as popular as the Charger or Challenger. They were a lot lighter and could be ordered with the same engine so they are a lot quicker then the heavier Charger/Challenger

      Also with nearly all the Challengers and 'Cuda's all bought up, the 340 Dusters and Darts are gaining in popularity and value. They are very good cars, good looking as well.

Thought about swapping in a 340, actually bought motor and trans from a wreck but swap never happened, school came first and I sold the lot. :)

    Hello Nick! Whatever your customer sticks that killer small block in is going to shred its tires. I think my pulse was trying to match it stroke for stroke. Your apprentice learned the hard way to always leave bolts in certain parts if you have to pry them apart: transmissions & rear ends will always win if you get caught between them & a hard place. I know the Duster is restored, but I feel that a Plymouth looks better in Plum Crazy. Maybe I'll find one to fix one day - but I think my chances are better at getting struck by lightning, lol.

    here's my 2cents on the duster, first the lose steering. either the steering box is not centered or needs adjusting at the center point. as far as the tach, when he put in the new module from points now it may be firing the plugs every rotation rather than every other. there may be dip switches on the tack to accommodate that. free is worth just that!
