This is from Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav 2014 (partly postponed to January 2015 due to untimely rains). This performance was actually on 1st January 2015.

is it just me or does this sound very similar to nabha nikas gayo chandrama (malkauns gwalior bandish). is there a reason? are durga and malkauns similar ragas?

That’s a curious observation. The ragas are actually related by a process called moorchhanaa or graha bheda. The D' S R M P of Durga corresponds to the S g M d n of Malkauns. You may similarly discover more inter-raga relationships.

One should add, perhaps, that while the similarity is there, each phrase is still different because the way D'SRMP sounds with a P-S tanpura is different than the way SgMdn would sound with a M-S tanpura. The ‘flavour’ of the particular sur is in the way it interacts with its neighbours and also with the tanpura.
