One tool you forgot is a cutting torch, if all else fails cut the washer into four pieces and put it out for the trash man. lol. Jk, good video. Very well explained.
3rd year in a row using this super helpful video to take my washer apart and clean it. Got the washer July 22nd, 2013. First had to clean it September of 2020, because the washer was leaving black gunk on our clothes. Cleaned it thoroughly using this video. Fast forward to September 2021 (12 months) and same thing, so followed the video and cleaned again. This brings us up to June 2022 (9 months) when the black gunk started appearing on our clothes again. After about a month of doing our laundry at the laundrymat while we discussed just getting a new washer, I finally broke down and followed the video again. It's a great video, but I'm in my 50's and it's getting harder and harder each time we have to do it. We now hopefully have bought ourselves some time but I can't imaging having to continue doing this year after year. 🤷♀️
thanks for the video, it helped me immensely! i would like to add some things that i noticed in case it might help others. i used your trick with the car jack and the 2x4. if you turn the 2x4 90 degrees so the jack is pressing on the edge instead of the face, it will help it to not break under the force. the reason the drum doesn't want to come off is because there is a void between the two bushings on the drum that allows moisture to collect and it forms a ring of rust on the motor shaft. i would definitely recommend the jack and 2x4 method here instead of tapping with a hammer so as not to damage the threads on the shaft or disturb any of the pumps underneath the basin. once you get the drum off you should take the rust off with some sandpaper, i used some 150 grit aluminum oxide paper and it worked fine. then make sure you clean the dust and stuff from around the seal at the base of the motor shaft because it could damage the seal. also, clean the rust out from the drum where the shaft goes through, i just took all the parts out on my deck, soaked with soap and blasted them with my electric pressure washer, it worked fine. once you clean all the rust the drum should slide back on very easily
Awesome video! I was stuck at getting the drum off of the spline. Thank you for showing how to get this job done without buying specialty tools! I appreciate folks that post!!!!
I just used this video to take my Maytag apart and deep clean it- THANK YOU!!!!! I did leave WD-40 on the washer shaft after removing the nut for 1 1/2 hours before removing the agitator plate and drum- huge help. Again thank you for posting this- SUPER HELPFUL!!!
This video was a big help in cleaning up my five year old washer. I also learned that products like Afresh only give you the illusion of cleaning the washer. The underside of the agitator was caked with disgusting muck; in fact, everything was. And it was quite easy to follow the instructions. Thank you.
Literally the only video on the internet that taught me how to open the damn cabinet smh, I kept sliding a flathead in the front clips like other videos said when this it was so easy.
Very bad design from Maytag. To make it easier for consumer, there should have been an opening somewhere near the front, where you can drain the stagnant water underneath the drum. The opening should have a facility to put in a pipe and flush the water out or pump in some clean water/disinfectant and then siphon it out. Not everyone are capable of removing the drum and clean the way you showed us. The video was very informative though. Thank you.
But if people would actually use the clean washer feature the way they are supposed to this wouldn't be an issue. :) Not so much a poor design as much as people not reading their owners manual.
@@mikesantos6451 There plenty of people out there talking about how poor this machine is designed. Lots of people who are experiencing nasty rotten egg smell from there machine who also have used the affresh/bleach/vinegar cleaning cycles on hot water and nothing works. This is the answer to get rid of the smell unfortunately. So yes, a damn poor design.
This is the best cleaning video for the BRAVOS XL. The only changes I would make would be to turn the 2×4 width to the side to avoid the board breaking in your face. But before you set that up, measure the distance of the metal bit in the middle of the barrel to ensure when you put the barrel back, that it is seated correctly. Mine was only halfway on when I put everything back together.
I read your comment about turning the board on the side and why and it made sense to me. So thanks for posting that... could have ended in the hospital or worse.
Very helpful indeed! Especially using the car jack part. I don't think it was possible to take the drum out without that trick. I had to keep a socket in between the jack and motor spindle to get the drum all the way out. Even after thoroughly cleaning it was really hard to put the drum back in. Applying some soap solution (lubricant) on the motor spindle made all the difference and the drum went back in without any trouble. Thanks again for the very helpful video!
At the 11:30 mark, if your model doesn’t have screws then the metal ring is threaded on. I was able to remove it and then use the jack trick to remove the drum. It screws off counterclockwise. Hope this helps, too bad it took me an hour to figure this out. Also, most of the smell was under the drain cap. Put a cleaning solution in there, let it sit then used shop vac to get it out.
Great walk through. You really helped me through this job. That filter at the very bottom was so clogged and disgusting and I almost forgot to do it! Don’t forget to do the plastic filter. Its like a comb and gets all clogged with hair and gunk. Don’t know torque spec but always torque to yield.
Great video. We had a lot trouble getting the drum back on, even after lubricating the shaft. We found a piece of pipe to fit over the bottom shaft to hammer it back down.
That 2x4 had some pressure on it. just wana say thank you for taking the time to show the details. Great job. I have a bad drum bearing. I just finished watching your video on replacing that too.
I followed this helpful video and found that the drain hose needed a deep cleaning as well. A lot of dirt caught in the ridges of the plastic hose. I plan to replace this with an old school rubber hose to avoid this in the future.
Just fyi, if you don't own a jack and a 2x4 you can still remove the drum if you have a sledge hammer and another person on hand. Have the other person lift up on the drum while you use the top face of the hammer to smack the spindle shaft repeatedly. You'll be hammering for quite some time but eventually it should come free. Hope this helps!
Use a little soap and Vegetable oil for spindle spline and a 7/16 bolt has torque range of 24-49 ft lbs depends on the grade of the bolt a grade 2 is -24 a grade 8 bolt is 49. My machine is 2013 we have used the A fresh and a bleach solution and had no issues. The spin cycle seems to be getting louder. It’s spinning fine and balanced. I will clean and inspect the bearings. Thanks for the tips
Great video aside from the part about the spindle keeper and naturally I can't get that out. Oddly other videos are vague on that too. How does that white plastic spindle keeper come out?
My center shaft piece doesn’t have screws. There’s holes, but nothing in them. Like it’s spot welded together. Mines a newer model, but I’m about to throw this piece of trash in the road.
Thanks, very thorough. Affresh only generally cleans the inside. I take a blue Scotch sponge and clean the inside rims and channel along the inside rim under the lip. Lots of scum in there too. And I'm changing to a vinegar solution to use instead of Affresh. I'm not buying into more chemicals and plastic to clean these machines. They aren't working well anyway.
Nice video. Just did this the other day. The question I have is why did you take the rear hinges out. You can just pop the 2 tabs on the front panel with a putty knife
I didn't want to damage the finish with a putty knife, by loosing it I can slide the top a bit more and the top will come off with minimal effort, just a couple extra screws to keep track of.
Some videos mention that this model sucks small garments like handkerchiefs and even socks underneath into the drum cavity, causing frequent unbalanced loads. Did anyone here find any garments when you pulled the drum out?
I’m just wondering if I’m going to be able to get it back together also… my daughter has a really strong arm… I took pictures to show her… we wash our shower curtain in bleach so I’m hoping it’s not to bad…

Sounds like a drain issue. Did you take apart and clean out the white lint drain trap? Could be a clogged tub drain or drain pipe. I would check both ends. Just don't be too aggressive and damage the pump.

I still can't get the drum out. It seems to be stuck. Are you sure that there is no need of playing with the BOTTOM of the Bravos XL in order to free the drum? I saw some videos in which they removed some bolts from the bottom of the machine.

Hi. Can you tell me. This inlet pump is part of a larger system. Not quite sure why the unit is all one. But does it come off without removing the entire top
Honestly you did a great job explaining the process. Even some like me that don’t have any experience can understand the steps. So any advice for a different washer that doesn’t requires such a hazle to clean???? 😂 I have this exact washer but I’m looking at this video bc it is not rinsing very often specially with towels when it used to do it with the same amount of towels????? Not sure if cleaning it could help with this issue or could it that the drum is unbalanced or a sensor????

Followed every step. Pounded the drum in place like you said. Now the wash doesn't finish the spin cycle. I get the code "oL" for overload. I tried it with nothing in the wash.. only water. Still get the same oL code. Please help!
Hi there. I am in the process of doing this per your video. I don’t know technical words for the different parts, so I’ll do my best. My drum is also stuck on. I sprayed some shots of wd40 around the metal thing that is sticking up (I got the white plastic thing off). I haven’t gotten a 2x4 yet but I have the jack ready. The drum won’t come up over the metal post. Do I put the jack on top of the metal rod that’s sticking up?
+Caroline Lipp place the jack on the bottom to push up on the 2x4. This is the best way to separate the drum from the vertical drive shaft. Just make sure you have the various covers removed so you can see the top few inches of the drive shaft. The Jack will push down on the shaft while the 2x4 will push up on the drum generating the mechanical force necessary to break the drum loose.
We bought our machine used (they said it was 4-5 years old, it was 10 year old). After 2 months this howling started, then splashes of grease was coming out of the bottom onto the floor, and your feet if you happened to be standing there when the spin cycle was going). The bearings needed replaced and no repairman would do it on this model because it wasn't worth the money vs time/effort to do it. With a little help from my husband, we got it done. It would have taken half the time if I knew the technique here to remove the dang drum. It's been almost a year now and it has been running great. Sure wish it was easier to clean the insides and filter like we all do. I do a vinegar clean cycle about every 2 or 3 months so under the agitator has always been clean since the original disassembly for the bearings.
I can't get the drum to reseat properly on the shaft. I tried beating it down with the 2x4 like you suggested by it didn't budge. Any other suggestions?
Did it get back on for you?? Just wondering, I’ve been wanting to do this, washers aren’t cheap and buying another one, just might pay to clean it for sure… I didn’t know it was that bad, we’ve been getting spots on our clothes,
I have a smell that appears about every 6-9 months, but I have two small children that put strange smells into their clothes too, and sometimes I think I use too much detergent so that does not help either. The washer clean cycle helps, but I have to do this about once a year.
I tried finding answers on why my bravos XL is filling with water and spins slow and does not go into the normal washing cycle setting it just been slow and filled with water I was wondering whoever made this cleaning video deep cleaning video if they could help me troubleshoot why it's spinning slowly and feels with water if anybody has any troubleshooting tips where to begin on such a problem please comment me back thank you
I am trying to remove the water inlet valve filter and for the life of me it won’t come out with any pliers I use. There’s not enough plastic to grip onto anyone else try to remove it to clean it out?
LOL yes, it was a nightmare removing the wash plate on mine. I found the best way was to use these cheap little hook tools from Harbor Freight, put them in opposite side holes on the plate and pull that way until it came off.
The agitator less washing machine has to be one of the worst designs to hit the market in the history of washing machines. Why Maytag and other well known brands would launch unproven concepts and designs on the American marketplace is something only patent attorneys can explain.
@@Cougracer67 You don't know me. I have a busy life. This is just needlessly complicated. they should make these machines easier to take apart or something. It took 2 people several hours to do this, that's ridiculous
The fabric softner and detergent cups can be cleaned under a faucet with a paper when the top has been removed; the only hose that may need cleaning is the pump out hose, but that should still be ok. The biggest issue is the stagnet water that sits as the bottom of the machine and co-mingles with lint and other debris.
I was hoping there would be a simple filter under the agitator that I could just clean out goodness I don’t think any wife much less some men could clean the washing machine after watching this video
Absolutely ridiculous Maytag design. I watched a 68 year old lady clean her washer filter, which was engineered in the front right lower panel. With no tools, she had it open, cleaned, replaced in a (edited) video of less than five minutes. There is no way I would (1) have enough tools (2) have the strength and dexterity to perform this simple maintenance.

yes it is supposed to have fluid in it. It helps absorb the energy when it's time for the spinning to stop, and helps balance the load

A little ridiculous that we have to go through all of this to clean the filter that needs to be cleaned every 3-6 months
Waaay too much trouble. But your shirt is really nice!
Our washer howls on the spin cycle. Is the lower drive unit replaceable or could crap under the drum.be causing this issue?
Just wondering, I’ve been wanting to do this, washers aren’t cheap and buying another one, just might pay to clean it for sure… I didn’t know it was that bad, we’ve been getting spots on our clothes,
Did the smell come back or is it better after fixing?
I have a smell that appears about every 6-9 months, but I have two small children that put strange smells into their clothes too, and sometimes I think I use too much detergent so that does not help either. The washer clean cycle helps, but I have to do this about once a year.
Wonderful!!!! Thank you!
Thanks, we have one and it needs a cleaner..

I tried finding answers on why my bravos XL is filling with water and spins slow and does not go into the normal washing cycle setting it just been slow and filled with water I was wondering whoever made this cleaning video deep cleaning video if they could help me troubleshoot why it's spinning slowly and feels with water if anybody has any troubleshooting tips where to begin on such a problem please comment me back thank you
Thankypu
Thanks helpful
I am trying to remove the water inlet valve filter and for the life of me it won’t come out with any pliers I use. There’s not enough plastic to grip onto anyone else try to remove it to clean it out?
I definitely should not try to do this because I will ruin my washer
💯
oh yea just pull out the middle piece just like that
LOL yes, it was a nightmare removing the wash plate on mine. I found the best way was to use these cheap little hook tools from Harbor Freight, put them in opposite side holes on the plate and pull that way until it came off.
..a little dark,..but overall, very helpful!
The agitator less washing machine has to be one of the worst designs to hit the market in the history of washing machines. Why Maytag and other well known brands would launch unproven concepts and designs on the American marketplace is something only patent attorneys can explain.
This whole washer is crap. I had such high hopes from Maytag. It's just bad design all around.
What the fuck? That is so many tools and so much effort! Ain't nobody got time for that! Can I pay someone to come do this???
Don't be such a couch potato!!
@@Cougracer67 You don't know me. I have a busy life. This is just needlessly complicated. they should make these machines easier to take apart or something. It took 2 people several hours to do this, that's ridiculous
You didn't address how to clean out the fabric softner and detergent cups and hoses!
I love you

My bravos XL is a piece of garbage. has never cleaned the clothes properly and water level is always too low. waste of $$$$
Will never purchase again a washer that I can’t access the drain to clean
I’ve hated this washer since I purchased!!!!
Do you have any pointers I got one also and it the worst washer I ever had..
Come on man, speed it up. I have stuff to do
Absolutely ridiculous Maytag design.
Hurr durr I got me safety glasses on to fix my washing machine urky durky
Thank you
