A few years after a bad GC experience, I decided to give the RAT another shot and wowww, it's kinda like a Big Muff minus the drawbacks. Just a modern 2 version but I don't see myself replacing it anytime soon 🤘
Man- I came here expecting to confirm my decision to get a Rat again- had one back in the late 80s but- anyway, screw dat- I want a DS-1. I had always passed on the DS-1 because for some reason I thought it was a lower gain pedal- I must've heard a different Boss OD or something and thought it was a DS-1. Anyway- this sounds great, I love it. I'll probably buy the Sweet Water package deal where you get a Rat 2 and a DS-1 together for like 140 bucks. I want them both.
We concur- if you're a collector you have to own a Rat and at least 2 of the Proco variants. The only exception to this rule will be for the JHS Pack Rat- which would suffice for your "variants"- but you have to have the box, or it doesn't count. We have spoken..... get in line or you will be shaved and sterilized- then isolated for further study.
Best video on UA-cam comparing these two!! The rat is the pedal for people who want distortion but also like a bit of fuzz. DS-1 sounds good under the right conditions and with careful tone knob adjustments.
I was about to say “I really like that guitar”, but I left that comment 12 months ago. The Rat sounds cool. I’m trying to talk myself out of buying the Crazy Tube Circuits Motherload. I appear to be losing! 😁👍
Even if for nothing more than reference, every guitarist should own one of both at some point. That being said I picked up a rat wf reissue before prices got insane and I'll never sell it. Also have a MIJ ds-1 that is fun but it just doesn't compare to the rat for my uses. Rat also stacks with other pedals way better than the ds-1. Put a treble booster or any od before it and things get really in your face and mean quick.
The Boss DS-1 has had a lot of famous users including Steve Vai, Joe Satrioni, and Kert Cobaine and the Proco Rat has had some famous users such as both the guitarists of Sunn O))) because it's both a Distortion, and a Fuzz all in one pedal and they both have a Turbo version the DS-1 has the Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion, and the Rat has the Proco Turbo Rat so now we need a shootout between the Boss DS-2 and The Proco Turbo Rat
Great demo ! I have a DS-1 but rarely use it (Bad Monkey or BBII more, Dist +, too). I got it after buying a Super Shifter and not liking it. Special order so store credit only. Also got a first gen Micro Cube which i love. I gotta give the DS-1 more time. Read Gary Moore used one for Corridors Of Power. BTW, i like seeing a Cort guitar here. I have an Arrow from circa '83 i paid $150 for in '96 or so. Cool V style guitar. Rock On !!!
Haha...your conclusion that if you're a collector you likely need a rat was awesome. 😂 Just to confirm how many other pedals do we need sitting on our shelves? 👀 Another quality and fun vid Jason...neither pedals have ever been for me...other than the shelf. 👍😃
@@JasonAyalaSpare Thanks. It sounds great. I’m sick of constantly retuning my Les Paul, and it’s hard to play on the dusty end of the fretboard. I’m going going to hunt down one of those Corts. Cheers, Max 👍😁
@@JasonAyalaSpare was that a “Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded set”? I’ve checked out the M600. It’s like a swanky version of the Hotrod Ibanez, and other guitars, we used to play in the early-80s. It looks perfect for pimping. Thanks a lot, mate. 😁👍
I run my Ratt distortion @ 11 / filter @ 11 / volume @2 . It’s magic! I have never been able to get the DS-1 to sound good. I wonder how many DS-1s are in closets or shelves and not on pedalboards?
Great comparison. It confirmed some things that I already knew, but also made other things really clear that I'd totally missed. I'm new to the Rat pedal (okay... a cheap Chinese clone, does that count?). But yeah, I love it with a clean amp but only with hotter pickups (don't like it at all with my Strat). I've owned a DS-1 since forever and have had a love/not-so-much-love relationship with it since day one. All these years later and I still don't totally get it, but I've done some great recordings with it, usually using it in the "wrong" way (basically as a pseudo fuzz tone with maximum fizziness -- it cuts through the mix in a really interesting way). Big thumbs up for the shoot-out, that was excellent!
@@dagony7383 You know what- you're dead right man. I hated the Rat- until I hit it with a TS- wow. Tightens it up, gets rid of all that flubby bottom end- beautiful distortion tones, chugs like a champ.
Both great pedals, been using both since 1980.both sound so nuch better boosted with a tubescreamer or boss suoer od .. persnally think the rat has more bite!!

I love that guitar. It’s so cool and you have complete access to the entire neck.
I’m just gonna go with both cause they’re both dope as hell

Does it have a loud "hummmm" sound when you activate it? Seems like it has a humming problem :/

The RAT has a texture that I really like, I've come to appreciate the DS-1 more these days, I sounds better through my Marshall DSL than the Fender.
Enjoyed the compare and especially def leppard towards the end. thanks!
I like how the ds1 has a more bouncey sound . If that makes sense

I own the latest Proco Rat and plan on keeping the boxes to all 6 total pedals I have.
I've got a II by Berry Pedals.... it's a fantastic way to get two rats with multiple clipping options onto your board in a really tight package!
I have the Pack Rat. Great pedal - all the Rat I need.
Nice demo, I dig the Rat

DS1 FTW
Proco RAT = flawless Victory, Especially a nice old one :)
Sounds awesome. I love both pedals and have owned many of them. What pickups are on the Cort?
8:43 that riff is killer, u got me headbanging in my chair
Yeah, I just made that one up while doing this demo. Take it if you want.

Truth be told, I actually proffer the current RAT over the older ones with the sacred LM308 chip.

Since then I bought a MIJ DS-1 and a Reissue RAT. New video coming soon.
Nice! Do you notice a difference between the vintage/ri and the 'regular' ones?
@stillpist yes, the vintage DS-1 has less mid range than the current version and the vintage Rat RI splutters more than my current Rat
Exactly what I was looking for
no worries, all part of the service.

Who is Kert Cobaine? 🤔
Awesome video
The tone control should be considered (maybe it simply is) a low pass filter (LPF).
Yes
I love my rat but it's too noisy, I just got a 386 from dirty haggard, it's amazing.

The RAT is the best distortion pedal you can buy.... it does OD, Distortion and fuzz well . put it in front of EQ pedal and you can do anything
