This week I am tackling the impossible, by turning this into that featuring me turing a store bough grocery store cake into a elegant modern trendy wedding cake. The grocery store cake was iced in whipped buttercream icing and I am going to use that frosting to ice the bridal cake. This DIY wedding cake was so easy to make. I will show you how to create a two tiered cake iced in pink and navy bule icing and covered in gold leaf, and fresh roses and orchid flowers. Let's do this!

Here's a couple tips from a retired decorator; freeze your cakes before stacking, the shortening/butter hardens and if you work quickly you won't get any finger prints on it. For the flowers, have a pot of melted parafin wax on hand, it doesn't have to be super hot but warm enough that it's in liquid form. Dip the cut ends of the flowers into the wax and it seals them, no liquids or chemicals from the tape get absorbed into the cake. Find yourself a wider spatula to lift your cakes, using an offset spatula doesn't give you the stability you need when lifting the weight of a cake. I absolutely love the concept of what you've done here specially with what's going on in the world today.

As a retired party planner, I have had two cake emergencies and fixed the situation the first time with 6 Sara Lee Coconut Cakes from the freezer section, 2 sets of wooden chop sticks as dowels, extra shredded coconut and fresh whole berries. It was actually very pretty for all the craziness. The second was with two walmart cakes cut into squares. I washed and reused the columns. Using tons of frosting I made filigree white swirls. Covered the top with the toss bouquet and we were back in business.
    Creativity wins everytime. Great Job.

I wasn't quite THAT motivated, but for my wedding (we tried to be as DIY as we could and spend the money on the honeymoon instead!) I ordered a three tiered plain white cake. Did not say wedding. Just a mostly plain, three tiered cake. Cost me about $60. I used fresh culinary flowers and a topper bought on Ebay to decorate and it was lovely. That added about $30 to the total. Had I ordered the SAME cake and called it a wedding cake, it would have been $200, just for the cake. It's a special day, but it is ONE day and there are so many more important things..buy experiences, not things.

This is not necessarily true. It CAN be, but absolutely is not always.
I own a professional bakery and I specialize in wedding cakes...specifically high end couture wedding cakes. I also make celebration cakes. There is no “wedding tax”. Everything is priced based on number of servings, flavor, filling, and the design. I don’t care if it’s a wedding cake or a birthday cake, the price will be the same regardless.
However, I absolutely understand why people DO charge more. Weddings are stressful. There are multiple vendors to deal with. Multiple points of contact. When I have a wedding cake, I know I have to deliver and set up, which takes extra time. I need to have phone numbers for the bride and groom, the coordinator, the venue, a parent/bridesmaids, and the florist. I may need to follow up with different vendors leading up to the wedding so we can work together. If there is a problem and the cake is damaged or ruined, you’ve affected THE WEDDING DAY- which people usually aim to only have one of. There is no replacing or redoing. HIGH STRESS.
On the other hand, if you order a birthday cake, I generally only have one point of contact. I may or may not need to deliver. If I mess up, it’s not the end of the world because Little Johnny has another birthday next year. That is MUCH less stressful.
More work, more stress, more time= more $$$.

I didn't even know that someone could be a cake decorator in the supermarket.
There are interesting things in the world.
Maybe it is also a shopping centre with a supermarket and other catering establishments such as restaurants and bakeries.
I also say when I go to this supermarket in a centre that I buy fruit, vegetable bread and so on there, while I buy the bread at the bakery next to the supermarket in the shopping centre.
I wonder who could even think that the cakes are baked there.
The cakes are probably off the shelf where the breads from a large bakery are.
Some supermarkets also get the things pre-baked and bake them in the supermarket to the end.
I have not yet seen complete cakes on the shelf, only in the freezer, the supermarkets I was in were probably too small for that.
I don't even know that a whole cake can be bought in the supermarket.

For our wedding, I was quoted $600 for a naked, three tiered crumb coated cake, with no decorations. I have done my fair share of cake baking and decorating, so I wanted to ice it myself. $600 was just too pricy for me. So I did my USUAL insane crazy ADHD thing, and I made mine myself, two days before the ceremony, from scratch. Three tiers, chocolate, strawberry and vanilla bean cake, with chocolate ganache filling and itialian meringue buttercream icing. The bartender at the country club (she wasn't aware I made it) told my friend that it was the best chocolate cake she'd ever had. *proud moment* That being said.... looking back, I probably would have rather retained my sanity, and time, as opposed to the bragging rights I rightfully deserved for my cake. The ingredients alone cost me $200. This is an EXCELLENT idea. I wish they just sold baked cake bread, because that's usually pretty tasty. It's the frosting that can be gross if they use a ton of shortening instead of butter.
That being said, the $450 price for her cake includes a whole lot more. Usually, with that price, there is a complimentary tasting to pick out flavors and fillings. It also usually includes a custom design service. And those thick, wrapped cardboard circles are EXPENSIVE. WEDDING OR NOT.
And you are paying for their expertise and experience. It's useful to know how to do this BEFORE the cake is needed.
Another reason why everything related to a wedding is so expensive, is because they are SO high stress. Brides/family are so demanding, that businesses charge in anticipation of that. There are almost always last-minute changes, add-ons, upgrades, and possibly (probaby (always)) lots of tears.
      Bridezillas are real, y'all.
A word on transportation. I promise, you are THE most careful driver EVER, when you have a tiered cake in the car. If you think you are driving slow enough, you still aren't. You have to drive SUPER SUPER slow, with flashers on, and a sign on the back of the car, letting people know you are transporting a wedding cake, and sorry for the 2mph right turns. It's shocking how easily cakes will slide if not properly secured. Try securing something that can't be touched. LOL. If it's not tiered during transport, and in separate pieces, then you have to perform on-site assembly and touch ups. That means bringing a mobile repair kit with you. Extra dowels, decor, bags, tips, knives and icing. I promise, EVERY cake has boo boos. How well they are fixed and concealed depends of how good the cake artist is.
I almost forgot! You have to anticipate the weather for venues and plan the timing, transportation, storage, assembly, even the type of icing solely based on the temperature and time of year! Even if the venue is indoors, it can melt during transport.
Last, is the cutting, and this is a just preference. If the baker is cutting the cake, they know where the support boards and dowels are. The majority of people will try to cut through them.
Staying until after the cutting can help you keep track of things like cake stands, transport devices or any such type of item that might be accidentally lost, tossed, or stolen. I once made a huge two tiered grooms cake. I designed and built an awesome cake stand made out of several stacked wood rounds painted a glossy piano black. It even had a wood interlocking car transport base. Soooo cool. It was expensive, and heavy, and a huge bummer. I completely forgot to ask after it and never got it back. My bad.
So, yes. A $450 valued cake from two $10-$20 cakes is a nice return. But for $450, you're paying for a huge service along with your dessert.

@Kelley Prather well I'm definitely not trying to hurt anyone's feelings, so I'm sorry for that. This is just something I've heard before (the "wedding tax"). And if someone required all of the things you listed, they would definitely tell you it was for a wedding. This "trick" wouldn't work for something that elaborate. I'm talking about people who may not have a lot of money and just want a pretty custom cake they can pick up and take to their small reception. Like a baker might do for a graduation cake. I've heard that if you say "wedding" no matter what the circumstances, the price will inflate. Obviously for you, this isn't the case so maybe it just isn't true 🤷🏽‍♀️ And high quality + time spent like you put in to your business is clearly well worth the price.

And it’s a baker secret that grocery stores sell extra icing, they also sell uniced cupcakes, etc - for last minute decorating. I personally can tell the cake batter is made w water and oil cause it’s too light but for others - that is a quite fix.

I think the reason it was quoted at $400 is because they're assuming the flowers and detailing is edible. Professional cakes are expensive because of all the fine details that are made by hand and are edible. Time and skill goes into making each rose petal to make just one rose. The more realistic and pristine the decorations look, the more expensive.

Beautiful job! I would never have thought a supermarket cake could look so lovely.
Just a hint for you and other bakers, though...use 'flower tubes' to hold the stems, not the floral tape, and do not let the flowers unless organically grown, touch the cake...because the pesticide or even artificial colors do come off the flowers onto the cake. You can also put a holder for the flowers on top of the cake so nothing touches it. Orchids and roses are considered edible flowers, so making sure they are organic and edible flowers is the best way to go when decorating with flowers...but supermarket flowers directly on a cake is not the best idea...I love what you did with your project though. Thanks for sharing it.

You are very creative and you have a great personality & your unique idea caught my attention.
I've been a professional baker/ decorator for 27 years, just wanted to see I could help you a lil. So watching you scraping the icing off kinda seemed counter productive but just know, buttercream icing is SO easy to make! It's basically a pound of confectioners sugar, butter, vanilla and a bit of milk. Doubling the recipe is easy too & it is much better!!!!! As far as the cakes go you could buy several cake mixes and buttercream ingredients for less then $10 and fresh cake is better than store cake. I worked at a high end grocery store and they stopped baking their cakes fresh back in like 1998, unless it was a special order where they wanted a size that wasn't something they kept on hand. Also you DEFINITELY!! need to freeze the cake, THIS IS NOT OPTION, overnight is best. Once your cakes have been in the freezer overnight you will be so surprised how easy they are to ice!! Also you could probably by the cake boards, the plastic plate and the columns ( dowel) from your local bakery or you could go to somewhere like Michael's, hobby shops and even Walmart to find them. Also I noticed you were using food coloring and when you color icing you have to use a lot so I would suggest getting Pastel colors them you won't have to use nearly as much. You definitely have a gift clearly as you've turned store cakes into wedding cakes pretty impressive, and I love the fact that you're self-taught,I made all the families cakes from age 10 to 17. Unfortunately cake decorator's notoriously get carpal tunnel, which happened to me so now I just do cakes for family and close friends. I loved doing a 3 tiered stacked cake with seashells. It was pretty simple and it looked really elegant, fresh flowers do too back in my day we made flowers out of icing. Keep up all the fun videos and learn as much as you can! 🎂🎉👍😺🌚🌟🦋. )0( Blessed be!!!

      So pause the video... 👀

@@rhysawilliams4446 First, you shouldn't *have* to pause the video. Second, even if you did, you still only get like 2 seconds of the entire thing...would be nice to see close-ups and different angles. 3rd...all of what I just said is a moot point when thumbnails to other videos are plastered all over the screen blocking view to most of the end pictures anyway. It's not that hard to dedicate 30 seconds or so showing closeup details of something you spent the entirety of the video showing all of these intricate steps to before the other video suggestions are plastered all over the screen

That’s what annoyed me also. Totally made it impossible to see the finished cake.

I have no idea how this end up in my recommendations. I could care less about wedding cakes but damn this woman is so watchable. She has an amazing personality. She definitely needs her own show.

I recently read a tip to get a less expensive wedding cake: tell the bakery it’s an ENGAGEMENT cake. Anything with the word “wedding” attached to it is going to be automatically more expensive. I’m curious to know if this works/if anyone has tried it.

Yes. Works for everything. Flowers, catering, car rental, venue hire... just goes to show what an overpriced rort the wedding industry is.

You basically have to lie your way into having a wedding XD

Totally agree. There was a show like 60 Minutes or something like that. They sent out 2 different women to get quote on all things wedding (venue, table settings, flowers, food, cake and all the other tons of things). One woman said it was for a wedding, the other said it was for either a retirement party or engagement party (I forget which). Anyway the Wedding quote was 55% MORE $$$ than the other event. Everything was the exact same, until the word Wedding was used.

Not always. I charged based on the size and difficulty of the cake not what it was for.
