The one thing I will say as someone who reads 3-4 books a month, you can read, but it won't do much. You have to learn to make detailed notes, make questions on things that have caught your attention. Most of all learn to implement what your ready into your life.

lynx lot I've noticed that whenever I read a book and planned to make notes afterwards, it never happened.
It's definitely better to make notes while you read the book for two main reasons:
      1. You can write down your thoughts and unanswered questions while you read
      2. Adding a little time to each day is better than adding a lot of time to 1 day
(eg 1 hour per day of reading + making notes is better than 45 min per day of reading + 2 hours on one day of making notes)

I read on the bus in the way to school, I read while waiting for lessons to start. I even read while walking! I say 'ok imma read 100 pages today' so I have something to reach for, and it makes it easier to read to that page if I set it as a goal. If you don't love books it will be harder to read as much. For example in this quarentine i have read 13 books and i read many of them in one only week) and i have learn many things without the help of any notes and i still remember of everything. If you have motivation and love to read it’s not difficult! If you keep reading and reading you won’t feel the need to make any notes because your brain is already used to it. that's why they say that reading is good for your memory and brain. It’s not impossible! :)

You’re right. This video is helpful but it still makes assumptions, one of them being all books and writers are created equal. You may read a book with vocabulary and terms you’ve never seen before, which slows down the reading process. There could be intelligent authors with good ideas to share but are poor writers. With time, it becomes easier to digest.
Never sacrifice comprehension. Reading on a consistent basis is more than enough. It’s a marathon not a sprint.

    Hi Jim!
Your video basically conveys the following bottom-line: Read a book 45 minutes a day, for seven days and you will be able to read one book a week. As you say, this can be done without speed reading and it would allow one to achieve the same monthly rate of an average CEO, who is capable of reading up to 4 books a month.
Now, my objections. First, it all depends on what book one is reading. Is it a romance? Is it an essay? Is it an easy-to-read book that wants to divulge with easy language scientific knowledge? Or is an university textbook that a student in law or in math or in physics or in engineering is supposed to use for preparing an exam?
Second, assuming that one is totally focused and concentrated on every single word and that one is reading at a speed that still allows full comprehension of the text and if we assume that one is not taking any note at margin, i do not believe that one could possibly read at a higher rate than 20 pages per 45 minutes - and this is an amazing rate!
Consider that if i have to read and fully grasp the meaning of any math textbook, if i read at a pace of 12 pages per hour that's a top performance rate...
So, if we make a weak assumption of 20 pages per 45 minutes, that implies a total of 140 pages per week. I personally do not know any book with that number of pages.
Even if you read an easy romance, i do not believe one could possibly finish the book in one week at that pace.
Don't misunderstand me: the tactic of devoting 45 minutes a day works very well in general because fosters commitment. What i do not believe is realistic is to read at that pace an entire book while still keeping high the comprehension.
And, when i talk about comprehension i mean something deeper than simply passively acquire factual knowledge. Active knowledge requires questioning, making inferences and so on. I presume the figures you have used at the beginning of the video regarding the speed of CEOs do not take into account how they get knowledge out of those books. Probably they skim over uninteresting pages and jump from chapter to chapter to grasp the overall idea and to "land" only on those parts that promise to deliver something specific they are looking for.
    Have a good day!

Hey whatever you are saying is true but I myself have noticed that when I read a book for 45 minutes on a daily basis, it somehow makes your brain get a hang of it,as we practice it the same day, the brain's efficiency improves, like it can read more pages in that much time and still understand... Somehow our brain get the technique and it becomes more and more efficient in it.

Nice video. I have been reading a book per week. In addition to dedicated time, my formula is to steal the minutes which otherwise go void or on social media. Like read for 5 mins when lunch is being served, read for 15 mins while waiting for your girlfriend, take kindle in the washroom and use those 10 mins (sounds weird but works!). If you learn to steal minutes like this, it is not difficult to read a book per week. Weekends are anyway there to get disconnected from the world and complete the book.

And very dumb actually, try to speed read Nietzsche for exemple, and if you like what your read, you don't need "speed reading" imo. Personaly reading is a real pleasure and since i've got an e-reader (so i can move with all my differents books) i read several book per month.
But (and that's why i clicked, even tho the video was on my main page) it can be hard to read when you're tired.
If you have trouble to focus, do some push-ups and your brain will light up. If you feel like you read too slowly, no worries. Just read, it will be easier the more you do, and the more you're into what you read (wich risk to happen if you do read). :)

  • @507chetan
    @507chetan 5 років тому +3

The problem with reading a book in a week is that ....like Jim said its decades of research and understanding that goes in a book. Trying to download it in a week is not going to happen. You should give it time so that the concepts that the author tries to explain sinks in. Humans develop any skill through repetition. So trying to learn everything in a week wont generate enough repetition for your brain to drill it down to your subconscious. That is the exact reason why many people even though after reading several self help books dont see any change because the concept was never drilled down to their subconscious. You need to let the ideas sink this happens only when u read slow and try to digest every idea that is put forward.

I saw many comments saying that it’s very difficult to read a book per weak and understand the story. And for that i say : It depends on the person! :)

I don't have to schedule my reading, because I'm drawn to do it one way or another. I am a bit sporadic, but I get a lot out of my reading time. I often switch back and forth between two books, finishing them both around the same time and by being under two influences at once I often make interesting cross-connections between the two books. For example, try reading The Continuum Concept and Childhood Interrupted in the same month, reading some from one book, then some from the other. I also find it important to NEVER speed-read or skim. Immersing myself in the book is critical for me to remember what I've read and understand it fully. (This may be because I'm an INFJ, HSP, for any geeks reading this who knows what that means.) Thanks Jim for the video, I love your inspirational tone and your no-nonsense approach.

I think this type of reading would work if we want to read just for the sake of creating a record. But what if we want to read for the sake of learning new concepts/subjects which requires considerably long amount of time, then it would be very difficult to read a book every week. Also the main intention in reading a book is to apply it's teachings in our lives and it would be overburdening to apply all the ideas from every book we read every week.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking. If you have any problem in life especially numerical, if you can sit down for 5 minutes and think around a solution and do the math you will easily find a plan. Just like this, seeing a 300 page book seems hard, but doing the math and making a plan by no. of pages/time makes it look more manageable and possible.
