  • The two primary lid styles you're going to come across for the Langstroth style beehive is the telescoping outer cover and the migratory lid.
I use both lid styles on my hives and in this video I'll explain the pros and cons of both.

I used a piece of 1/2 plywood as a hive cover and a solid bottom board last spring because I was unable to score a lid due to shutdowns. Sometime in June, a migratory cover arrived from a major bee supply company. Two red bricks helped with warpage, otherwise plywood worked just fine in the summer months.

I've done that too! I used 3/4" plywood. It still warped a little, but I didn't need to use bricks.

I just started making the solid bottom board with 1x6x8ft treated lumber (the least expensive option) but its a little heavy [materials cost around 7-8 dollars each]. Cut some 2x4x93 wall studs into small pieces to make the rim of inner covers, 1/4 plywood as a center [material prices around 4 dollars each]. These are a few projects I'm working on to save money because hive pieces are expensive and everything is going up monthly (lumber, fuel, labor, etc).. Its a good thing my daddy learned me woodworking as a child. *The 1/2 plywood mentioned above was scrap from other projects.

I was told to paint my metal lid so it doesn't overheat the hive. Any specific color or type of paint I should go for?

I wouldn't bother painting a metal lid. I would assume it would chip off and the metal reflects the sun, anyway. I just paint the boxes a light color. Any light color will do. The colors of my boxes look like colors you'd use to paint easter eggs if that helps. We get whatever color is on the clearance rack at the hardware store. If you're really concerned about heat, you can put the hives in a shady spot. Of course, make sure you have a water source for them too! I have a video about helping your bees deal with the summer heat.
