  • I am now splitting all my hive to make big fat nucs to sell to my customers. In this video I take one of my great overwintered hives and make 6 nucs from it.

Good demonstration of making nucs, thanks. I've switched over to using queen cells for several reasons, it fits in with my current management

Hey Peter, one of the best games we played all year. Your Toons are for real. You'll be a force to reckon with for the future . COYG. If you ever want to come to NJ and speak to our beekeepers org., let me know. I'm the treasurer and we can see if we can work it out. Have a great spring.

How do you keep queens ready on standby? Like I’m trying to figure out how to not halt my progression of having queens constantly. Queen mating nucs with restricted entrance once the queen is mated? Basically I’m grafting for first time this year. Because you can make another nuc sooner than you can make another batch of queens right because it takes 30 days from start to being mated right? Idk if that makes sense

Can those nucs wait a day for the queen, or what is the longest the nuc can wait for the queen. Thanks

Some folks wait before adding the queen others do not. Yes they can wait but I put the new one in within hours.

Its amazing how you have a hive with so so much brood in them that queen must be in total swing in egg laying shes a monster layer. Tell me please how you get so much brood? I normally dont have much more then 7 brood frames of brood. Are you pumping in pollen patties? And feeding them to trick the queen into thinking its a honey flow! What type of queens are you using?

We are blessed with good pollen flows here in Maine and I guess the queens are damn good too! I often have double deeps with 12 or more frames of brood.

whats ur opinion of 4 vs 5 frame nucs. The first several years i bought 4 frame nucs and just thought that was what a nuc was, then i got a couple from u and realized 5 frame are much more popular. Is there much difference for the hobby beekeeper just playing, replacing or expanding

% frame is more popular in northern climates like Maine an I assume that is because we have limited time toi build up. In warmer climates 4 frames would do as well. Either will work in both locations....but thats my view.

Hello sir i have watched this video about 2 month ago in nepal
I have also 1 beehive 3 stroyed after watching videos i have made 2 colonies (catch queen bee with other 4 frames and send it 5 miles away) it get sucess
Then after i give them to generate queen in queen cups they produce 5 queen
I split them in 5 diffrent boxes and provide queen in night time around 8:00 PM distribute frames having honey equally and add feeder also
put each hives maintaining 6 feet distance i have get huge loss most of the bees are in 1 hive in next day evening
    Spliting is not success
Found death queen in 2 hives it does not have any other bees
In 1 hives there is less volume of bees later all of them died
In 1 hives all bees are there
Can you tell me where i have done mistake why i can't get sucess in spliting 1 into 5
In how many distance should i need to put the splitted hives
Should i need to remove the older hives
I have seen video i cant understand speaking i can understand written only

Start small. Try to just split the first hive when it has filled one-1.5 deeps with 6-8 frames of brood. Now wait for the those to get to 6-8 frames of brood. I suspect your problem is making the too small too early.

I use a similar method to you and can say that I have never had a single failure in any of my splits. The only difference is I do 4 not 6. In your experience how does Saskatraz compare to Buckfast? and do you know if they mix well? The reason I ask is I have a friend in NC and he is thinking of putting Saskatraz drones with Buckfast Queens to make them more hygenic, Doing a similar thing to what I did but putting native wild drones to Liguuistica and Buckfast Queens 20 odd years ago. Your Saskatraz bees look in good shape.

I dont get 100% but I am OK with 90% or so. I have not compared to Buckfast. I see no reason why a cross would not be good overall.
