In the murder on the links film (rutherford) the servant is played by Hickson. In an unimportant scene in the kitchen rutherford scolds Hickson saying "Oh! The next generation". It was incongruous to the script and I always thought it was meant to be a foreshadowing. Funny that Hickson played the character of a scolded maid and the joke is there for us to guess.... and you confirmed in this video that it was already decided 20 years before. Shows the inner workings of the industry!
Oh how I wish Joan Hickson had gotten the chance to play ALL the Marple stories - she was so spot on ❤ Just like David Succhet as Poirot in all his stories❤ Greetings from Denmark 😊
In "The Alphabet Murders," starring Tony Randall as Hercule Poirot, he meets Miss Marple, played by Margaret Rutherford, on the steps of the police station.
I actually have a 'biography' of Miss Marple! And one of Poirot. Both were written by Anne Hart. I'd LOVE to play a young version of Miss Marple, but I'd settle for playing Miss Marple if I live long enough. If I played young Miss Marple, I'd definitely base my portrayal on Joan Hickson, especially with the way her eyes move while she's thinking.
I remembered there was a movie where Poirot and Marple crossed paths. A little research and I got it, 1965's ABC Murders Tony Randall and Margaret Rutherford
How lucky we have been to have so many wonderful Misses Marple! Joan Hickson and Margaret Rutherford are my personal favorites, but I have enjoyed them all.
The Miss Marple I always remember as my favorite is Helen Hayes. I think she brought out both the fluffy, rather dithery, side of Miss Marple as Agatha Christie often describes her, and also the serious, penetrating face with which she presents her solution to the mystery.
My ranking: #1 Hickson; #2 Rutherford; #3 McEwan. I used to live on Barbados, and the location for the Caribbean story was a favorite family spot for swimming and brunch.
I would put Hickson marginally ahead of the rest, purely because she plays Marple as written. That said, I love different facets of all the others. They all bring something unique to the role. PS Helen Hayes is wonderful. They are all consummate actresses, with Julia McKenzie also having a wonderful singing voice.
Marple, the gadabout sleuth..... Poirot, the territorial grouper. Love them both. Dang, now I have to cue up Goodwin's theme, though Sherrer sure gave him a run for the money later.
Hickson is No. 1, no doubt. I also liked McKenzie and Helen Hays, although I've only seen her in 'A Carribean Mystery'. Lansbury did a decent job, but the film as a whole is better than just her performance. McEwan was far too coquettish for me and Rutherford was just a joke - no relation to the real character at all :-(
I have finally put my finger on why I do not think Ms Hickson is the best Marple. My opinion of course. In my view Miss Marple was someone who everyone felt was easy to talk to, would be sympathetic, or was inconsequential or fluffy enough that it did not matter what you said to her. She was friendly and un assuming and that it would only be after the fact that you would realize she was a force to be reckoned with. I found Ms Hickson's portrayal and demeanor Off-putting, stern, cynical. Her version was not someone who I could see people carelessly spilling out information to or seeking empathy or approval from. How could she gather information if no one would confide in her?
