Tried so many different suggestions for connecting Ronin S to A7R III. This is the only one that worked! Setting the camera to PC Remote not Mass Storage seems to be the key. Many thanks!
Michael Cuthbert I’m happy I could help! It’s a great feature I hope they keep adding to 🔥 I also did a film on how to control all 3 axis at the same time via the Xbox/PS4 controller, and I’ll have to follow up as they’ve really improved that feature so it works great now! Thanks for stopping by!
2:22 That is not the MCC-C cable. You plugged in the MCC-B cable which is the included USB micro cable. The MCC-C is a USB type C connection and it's my understanding that it does not work with Sony cameras which is why Sony Alpha users had to purchase the separate MCC-Multi cable (about $22) if you wanted full functionality. Just trying to clear up the confusion for the others that watched your video.
Dear Lane, please read all the information before commenting and confusing people further. This is a really, really confusing topic as it turns out. Yes, you are correct in that DJI forced Sony Alpha users to buy the multi cable to take full advantage of the Ronin-s, however, in this latest update, which this video is about, DJI has somehow bypassed the multi cable, issuing it useless for the features in this update. At this moment in time, using this update, the MCC-B/C cables now work, fully. The MCC-multi cable on the a7iii has the same features as the a7ii, which means it only works with the zoom feature... the follow focus and all other features in this latest update only work when using the usb-b/c cables. Hope that helps!
@@PhillipSkraba I wasn't aware that they no longer require Sony users to use that specific cable. It just happens that I'm having some issues upgrading my firmware, stumbled upon your video while speaking with several DJI reps today and they all stated the multi cable should be used. However, I'll take your work that the other 2 included cables work, I just haven't used them. You still said MCC-C cable at 2:22 but plugged in the MCC-B. It's not a big deal! I just had to rewatch it a few times to realize which cable you meant to say. Still an informative video though.
@@LaneMcCall Yes, it's driven a lot of people crazy this update! I've used both and they both work, as you noticed I used the usb-b cable in this video, but the usb-c works too just in case. Must have been real tired when filming this, you are however the first person to notice, I was hoping that mistake would fall into darkness and nobody would ever notice. Thank You!
@@LaneMcCall Well, like I stated, the multi will work, just not with the features of this update, it will zoom instead of follow focus, the b/c will follow focus as this update intended. There is even an official link below in my video summary, it's written by DJI, it says in black and white what cable does what, it states MCC-C specifically, however the MCC-B works exactly the same from my experience. It's the 2nd link down, check it out.
Got it to work after I used the right cable! The one with the straight connection kept doing the zoom wheel thing. Once I tried the 90-degree cable, worked perfectly. AND it worked just fine with my Sigma 35mm Art. Haven't tried other lenses yet, just that and a Sony zoom. Fingers crossed though!
That's great! I find a lot of people are still using the wrong cables and getting frustrated. That's awesome news that the Sigma Art works!! 35mm is my go to lens, I'll shoot everything and anything with that focal length!!
Thank you sooo much for this video! I managed to get the ronin-s working with my Sony A9 using the MCC-B cable!! Buttery smooth focus! You should update the title so A9 owners can take advantage. Thanks again!!
During the making of this video, the information was up to date. BUT, as of Feb 2020 we're up to firmware 2.2.1.10... so this video is outdated. Just something to be aware of. Still a great video on how to set this feature up.
Tom Glander I’m afraid that simply isn’t true. This feature works exactly the same for the latest firmware update as it did back then. There have been additions along the way such as force mobile and xbox/ps4 controllers options, but everything I’m teaching you in this tutorial is relevant today. Unless I’m missing something?
Phillip Skraba the app interface has been updated. I see a lot of old apps being used in vids. So... your app version in your video isn’t the latest app as of February 2020. That’s all I’m saying. The info is solid overall. Anytime you release a video you should identify the version of the app or firmware on the Ronin that you’re working with. It just reduces the potential for confusion.
Tom Glander Sure, you’re totally right, I’ll add that info 👌🏻 Yes, the actual way of doing is the same but they have added a whole bunch of cool things to the app. I love the xbox controller feature, and it works much better since they released the update for it.
Phillip Skraba cool. I’d like to try that x box controller bit. Looks really slick. Your video really helped me out of a jam so don’t think I’m talking crap about it. Need more thoughtful, feature rich vids like yours that address specific pain points. Again, great work.
Thanks for your help! The bummer About this is that it seems to disable the HDMI out feed from the camera, which is unfortunate. I love to use a smAll monitor for focus while operating the Ronin-S.
Funny thing is I never use a monitor whilst shooting with the Ronin-S, seems to get too bulky for me, but when I'll get home I'll double check that for you!
I'm afraid that the updated chart shows that the A6500 only works with the MCC-multi cable, which only allows for zoom option. The MCC-C cable with the usb-c connection allows for follow focus, which it seems is not compatible with the A6500.
FIXED: Set lens to AF. In camera menu setting (menu1:page5) set focus mode to Manual Focus. Turn off camera. Turn on Ronin, turn on camera. LENS HAS TO BE IN AF, CAMERA HAS TO BE IN MF. NO ONE TELLS YOU THIS.
Yes, I state at 1:40 that you do need to turn your camera to MF, I always have my lenses in AF and just change to MF on the camera when I'm filming on the Ronin-S, so I kind of bypassed that bit of information as I wasn't aware it didn't work with the lens set to MF... I do also state at 2:20 that you do have to turn you camera off and on, as well as then power on your Ronin-S. Thanks for the info, I'll have to test that out tomorrow!
Hiii there :)) , what lens do you use? Which cable do you use? My Sony A7III with Sony zoom lens 24-105 doesn't work... it says "check the connected device"..
For my A7MIII ronis s, only IR cable is working,, as followed above instruction , if connected c or b cable showing " check the connected device.. Pls help
I'm glad I could help you out! Make sure you practice the beginning and end of the focus at home today, as depending on how you throw it, it sometimes will float beyond the point you want it to. Good luck on the wedding!
Phillip Skraba yeah af worked for my 6d mk 2 but I kinda want control so hopefully the a7iii does that with the focus wheel and the chord. It’s usb part 13 right..?
@@anthonyrosales8456 It works great with the Sony. You need the MCC-C cable for this to work properly. Test it out and check it all works, follow my steps in the video carefully.
I'm so sorry... could we use different sound effects, rather than those loud BEEP effects? Its so hard to hear what you say before and after the beeps cause my TD is still adjusting from the spontaneous boom and drop of the effect. Maybe clicks or lower frequency beeps? I like your reviews
I'm sorry about that! That was one of my earlier, earlier videos and I guess I was a little trigger happy with the sound effects. I think I've moved away from those beeps now and also learnt a lot more about sound control. Thank You for dropping by 🔥
Do you know whats the difference between that cable and the one with usb-c? I have the usb c one and it works fine but im Wondering if theres any difference
Well, you should have the mcc-c (usb-c end) and mcc-b (usb-b end) cable. The mcc-c controls follow focus, as does the mcc-b. DJI did tell Sony users to buy the mcc-multi cable, which became obsolete for this update and turned it into a zoom function. I've found 3rd party cables sometimes do not work, so keep official DJI. I hope that helps.
I am trying to get my sonyA7iii with Sony 24-105 zoom lens to work. But with all the setting done as required, it just keeps saying "check the connected device"... What shall I do now? I have tried MCC-B and MCC-C cable..Do I need to buy the multi cable?
Cynthia, no, the multi cable will not work for this update, it will turn the follow focus dial into a zoom dial. So, only the usb-c and usb-c cables work, I recommend the usb-c as it works everytime. Please go though the video carefully, it should work if you follow my instructions. The only other thing I can think of is that you are using a 3rd party usb-c cable, I've heard people have had problems with that.
It works thanks but to rack focus I need to rotate this so much that it is almost useless (A7R3 + Sony FE 1.8 35mm) is there a sensitivity setting to the focus wheel ?
Yes, I have the same problem. I haven't seen an option anywhere to change the sensitivity and throw of the wheel, if you happen to find this option please let me know as spinning that wheel so many times to focus renders the whole idea useless.
I think the standard kit is worth it. The focus control is worth it if you want to shoot controlled manual focus, otherwise the AF on the Sony is insanely good, so most of the time you can trust that!
Have you both checked what cable you're using? The multi cable that DJI made people buy for the Sony cameras does not work for this update, silly problem I know, but you need to use the MCC-C cable that originally came in the box.
I think it can be very helpful if you want to pull focus manually from one point to another. It takes some practice and getting used to, but it works pretty well.
hey everyone.. I have followed these directions exactly..I am not an idiot or so I thought. Attempting to focus with a7iii 24-70 2.8 GM and 16-35 2.8 GM. As soon as I touch the focus wheel It says "This operation on setting not avaiable as follows - file format / RAW ". I have the right firmware, cable, PC remote turned on, Ctrl with smartphone off. Please SOS help anyone going crazy.
That seems really odd. I'm using the same camera and lenses with no problems. The cable you are using, it is the one that came in the box? Is it usb c or b? Have you tried returning to an older update and starting from scratch?
Great video ! I was able to set up mine right away ! Thank you very much ;) Only problem is that I use an external monitor and when I'm plugin the mcc-c cable there is no more display on the external monitor ... Any suggestion ?
Im using the multi cable, same one youre using. With all of these settings also and i can inly get the wheel to digital zoom and not pull focus. What gives? A7RIII Ronin S
It's work but Sir after I shoot a video when I get to see the result that what I shoot or how's the shot happens its not showing... I have to unplugged that cable to see the shot pls tell me the solution of this
I’m going to try this when I get home! I don’t get why it’s so hard to find a tutorial/instructions of this online!? I wonder if your focus jumping problems are because you aren’t using the MCC-Multi cable that DJI recommends?
Brian Ng Brian, unfortunately the MMC-multi cable doesn’t work for this update, only the MCC-C/B cables work. The step focus is incredibly annoying and renders the whole process for me to be useless.
Phillip Skraba WTF?!! They make us pay £30 for a 3 inch cable to allow the Sony to be compatible with the Ronin and the latest update doesn’t allow us to use it? Are they taking the Piss? I can see me moving to Ziyhun at this rate. DJI sort your shit out.
Phillip Skraba I just tried the follow focus on the Sony 24mm GM this weekend and it actually worked brilliantly. I didn’t have a chance to try it with my other lenses yet but it’s good news for my 24 because I use that the most on the gimbal. It may be something to do with the wider angle or it might just be that the lens is newer and better in technology. It was quite smooth with the focus wheel. I just wish there was a way to change the throw distance so it is easier to micro adjust focus.
+Brian Ng Yes my 35mm shows hardly any signs of step focus, I’m sure it’s not visible on the 24mm. Yes, it feels like I’m spinning that wheel round like a drunken sailor!! Throw distance is insane.
The mechanical focus motor is for more detailed pulling focus, or for manual vintage lenses for example. It's a cool addition, but if you just want to pull focus with compatible lenses (the chart is in the description) then the focus wheel is all you need.
+Jordan Wende Hi Jordan, the problem I’ve usually come across is that the lens is not compatible yet. If you’ve set it up like shown it should work. Please check the compatibility chart to see if your lens is on the latest update. Which one are you using?
Hello, that does not work for me. When I try to pull focus on the wheel it says that's not an available operation. I think it's set as zoom setting instead of focus puller. Do you know how can I change this? Thanks
i did it, it works, but my only different was the step to turn off and turn on the camera. After follow those step and fails, i finally turn off the camaera after to turn on the ronin s, then turn on the camara again and it works perfectly.
Great video! Unfortunately you can't use the playback function on the Sony A7iii when it's in PC Remote mode on the USB Connection in order to focus pull. Have you found any way around this?
Hi, I am using ronin s with the latest update and sony a7iii connected by USB c cable. I am able to start video recording by pressing the button on the gimbal so I would assume it is connected correctly but when I want to do panorama or timelapse the gimbal moves but the camera is not taking photos, any idea how to fix this? Thanks Adam
Hi Adam, my Ronin-S is currently in repair as it got hit by a wave, so I have no way of testing it at the moment, however, before I got hit by the wave last week I was also doing timelapses and it wasn't responding, so it might be a problem with either the Sony update or the Ronin-S update. When I tried to take a timelapse or motionlapse the camera would freeze on 0/400 and wouldn't take a photo, I had to turn it off and on for it to respond, so I'm guessing it's a Sony update that is needed.
Phillip Skraba thanks for replying, I don’t really know what is the issue as since I bought the cable it never worked for taking pictures. I have both ronin s and A7iii updated. I recorded this short demonstration of my issue ua-cam.com/video/p687jN4Mo6M/v-deo.html I would appreciate if you could have a look. Thanks
I have the exact same A7iii camera settings + MCC cable. but when I try to manually focus with the wheel, It tells it tries to zoom instead. The manual focus works if I simply replace mcc cable with usb-c cable, but that disabled my external HDMI monitor so it's not an option. Any idea why the MCC cable doesn't work for me? thanks!
Is it the mcc-c or mcc-multi you are trying? Is the usb-c cable a 3rd party? I've had experience that 3rd party ones sometimes don't work, it's really unpredictable with the cables. The mcc-multi renders the update useless and more or less reverts to the update before and uses the wheel as a zoom function, but, it you attach the mcc-c or mcc-b, the mcc-c works a lot better in my experience, then the update works and you have follow focus via the wheel. Yes, the one side effects is that your external monitor will automatically disconnect when you plug in the mcc-c/b cable. Hopefully it's something that will be corrected in a future update.
@@PhillipSkraba it is the mcc-c cable that working with the manual focus. But external hdmi will be disabled when using usb-c port. So I can only use mcc-multi cable. it works withauto focus/record button on Ronin SC, but not the manual focus wheel anymore. It will still zoom instead.
@@ericguqin Yes, that is all correct. The mcc-multi reverts it back to the old update where the focus wheel is a zoom function. The mcc-c/b cable uses the new update where the zoom wheel is a pull focus function, but the hdmi is disabled. Let's hope a future update opens the hdmi port too.
@@PhillipSkraba thanks for letting me know that it worked before. Almost send the wheel back. Maybe I should keep it for a while to wait for the update
@@ericguqin I say keep it, it could be very helpful in the future. I don't really touch mine too much, I use AF or use manual focus and go in and out of focus when I'm filming. I'm sure I'll use it more one day for some project.
Yes, looking at the compatibility chart, it looks like it does, only for the zoom function though, as the follow focus needs an MCC-C cable, not the MCC-multi cable.
Hi again Philip, how do you control shutter release for photos with your setup? I’m trying motion timelapses but the cable doesn’t trigger the shutter. I can focus and control video but not the shutter release for photos. Look forward hearing your suggestions 👍🏼
Hi Prem, my Ronin-S is in repair at the moment as it got hit by a wave, as soon as I get it back I'll test that out. Do you have the shutter button assigned to record? If you don't want shake, set the start shooting option at 5 seconds and that should sidestep the vibration of pressing the shutter button itself.
This is so odd, I use a similar setup, I can see the 24-105 is compatible, awesome lens by the way! Try going through that tutorial once again, doing everything I did. It should work. Are you using the original MCC-C that came in the box? Have you tried the MCC-B too? That works as well.
Phillip Skraba I got the essentials kit, in which cable and focus wheel were not included. I set up the camera before cable and wheel arrive 🤷♂️ . The lens is ok, I think it’s poor construction but I’m just hard pleasing guy. On another note Really surprised with the g’s 2.8f which cost ++++2.000€ and the rubber from focus and zoom melts and losens... never seen that happening on canon L’s
I followed the instructions and found it great. However, when I use the MCC-C cable, SteadyShot and HDMI Out functions are disabled. Do you have a way to solve this problem? Thanks!
Hi Quang, Yes, I'm afraid the steadyshot feature is turned off and hdmi out when connected to the mcc-c cable. Very frustrating, I know. I hope they open up these features in a future update. The IS in your lens will continue to work however, that's a plus.

I've connected via usb c and have followed the videos instructions, however at the moment all it's letting me to do start/stop videos and control the apature / shutter speed and iso. Hi Phillip, I have the Sony A7R3 and the Ronin S Essentials kit. The Essentials kit doesn't come with the cables, so do I need purchase cables to operate the camera/gimbal? If so which ones? Thanks hope you can help
Whoaa, it really depends what you want to operate. You have everything you need to operate the gimbal in general. If however you want to use the zoom option you need the mcc-multi cable, if you want to use the follow focus option you need the mcc-c cable, and if you want to use the xbox/ps4 option you need an xbox controller V2, or a PS4 Dualshock controller. Also, if you want to zoom or follow focus, you will need the focus wheel. I hope that helps!
@@PhillipSkraba Thanks for the reply. As I have the Essentials kit I don't have the focus wheel therefore I won't be able to use those functions which needs the cable. I'll mainly be doing Motion timelapse and general gimbal work which doesn't need to cable. Correct ?
@@peterafilms Well, yes and no. You can do the gimbal work without the cable, as well as the timelapse work, however, you can connect your A7R3 to the Ronin-S via the mcc-c cable and use the timelapse function via the gimbal so you'll be able to add movement to the timelapse, an awesome feature which I use quite often. It's worth the price of the cable as it can come out pretty cool.
It has a really, really weird feeling to it. It keeps focusing when I stop, it's a little annoying, so you could say it's more accelerated, and takes some time to get used to. The bottom line is that you need to practice and really feel it out for it to be precise.
Phillip Skraba Ok so it’s more like it’s delayed a bit... but does it also turn the focus motors of the lens itself faster when you turn the follow focus wheel faster? Since that’s the stupid problem with focus by wire lenses. With that it’s almost impossible to get continuous focus pull in video... that’s why I’m asking if it’s the same problem with the focus wheel of the ronin sc/S 😜🙃😅
@@MacBookAir-cu4fb Yes, it feels very much like focus on wire lenses. I really like using a manual focus wheel with teeth on a manual lens, it's clean, it's always perfect and I have full control. With this wheel you have this annoying roll-off. It's the same on the SC. If you turn faster it focuses fasters, but then it has a longer roll-off, so you need to stop focusing earlier to hit your point. It feels very unnatural.
@@PhillipSkraba AH, ok... Well thats weird... I dont know why Sony or most of the focus by wire lenses give us the opportunity to change from accelerated to linear focus...

Hi Philip, I have a Sony a7iii with 28 70 kit lens and I tried to connect ronin s focus wheel but it shows I just can use it for zoom. Do you have any suggestions for it?
Hi Alex, sure, this is usually when the wrong cable is connected. Using the mcc-multi will turn the wheel into a zoom, using the mcc-c/b, I recommend the c, will turn the wheel into a focus wheel. It's also best to use original DJI cables, some 3rd party cables do not work. Hope that helps!
Hi Anam, I use the same camera and lens with no problems. I've found that usually where people go wrong is they use the multi cable, use the usb-b or usb-c cable. Let me know if this was the problem.
Hey mate! Great video. I just recently got a Sony A7s ii and was considering the Ronin S, but wanted to make sure the focus wheel was compatible. Do you know if that will work?
Sorry for the late reply, it must have got lost in the notifications! Well, if you click the 2nd link in the description, it will show you what cameras/lenses are compatible, and even though the focus wheel will work, I'm afraid it will only work using the multi-usb cable, rendering this update useless for you, as you will only be able to zoom, not focus. Only the a73 series cameras have the ability to focus using the wheel.
On RSC2 focus / zoom in custom settings selected.. from front dial can change focus.. but how too shift between focus / zoom..is there ney button too select /zoom .. ?
Hi Brandon. What camera are you trying to connect? If you follow the instructions carefully there should be no problem. Make sure usb setting is set to PC remote, or try auto. I use the mcc-c cable, the mcc-b cable works too, the multi does not. From what I've heard they have to be the original cables you got with the Ronin-s.
you said mcc-c cable, which is the type-c plug. But in the vedio it seems you plug the cable into the "multi" port of the a7m3. So i am a little confused,is mcc-c cable and mcc-multi cable all avilable for this new feature? Or just the mcc-c cable can?
Cato Stieve I actually use the mcc-c cable, the multi did not work for me and from what I’ve read is not meant to work for anyone after this update. I believe using the multi you just go back to having the zoom option.
Hi Phillip, Im trying to use the focus wheel on my A7riii but when I turn the camera on it just says connecting and check the connected cable afterwards. Do you know why it does that? Ps: I put all the settings the same way you did yours. Thanks, this is driving me mad. Cheers.
I think they are trying to concentrate on the newer models as with everything, forcing people to update their equipment. It's just the world we live in. I have the same problem with some of my equipment and am upset that because of a lack of updates I will have to buy newer models to keep up with the technology.
Hi Daniel, yes, it seems that the multi cable now doesn't fully work for this update, if you want to have follow focus capabilities then you have to use the usb-c or usb-b cable. I use the usb-c cable. It's odd that they did this, I'm sure they have their reasons.
@@PhillipSkraba so this means i can use the cables that were original delivered with the ronin now for all funcitons and i bought the mcc multi but its useless now... or do i have a disadvantage with the mcc-c?
@@deekays4 Yes Daniel, you can now use the original usb-c cable that came in the box for all the functions on this update. Who know what they'll do in the future, so it's worth keeping that multi cable just in case, but for now, hide it safely away. Let me know how if that cable works for you.

Thank You!
@@PhillipSkraba It's good to know that! The next time I talk to DJI, I'll mention the cable type and tell them they all work and see what they say.
That's great news! It's a really awesome addition to this gimbal. Sure, I'll add that to the tags, thank you!
Easy to assemble, good strong materials, feels good, looks good.
Sure, that's about right.
Tom Glander You would love the controller! The awesome thing is controlling 3 axis at the same time, that makes it so amazing!
Just used this on my A7Siii and it worked a charm! Thank you!
Superb! I'm happy it worked, have fun with it.
Hey, great video.. try changing the focus to slow focus mode on the ronin app.. that should solve the "roll off on the focus" issue ...
Great, I'll give that a go and see if it helps! Thank You!
Thank you so much brother. you saved me a lot of time navigating other videos.

You're welcome Chris, great to have you on the channel!
Hope you see this! Was wondering how to pull focus digitally BUT remotely. Can the app do so? Pls help, finding answers is so hard lol
Hey i am trying with Sony A6500 but its not working. Hey may you help me out to setup with ronin s
THANK YOU! I of course assumed the lens had to be set to MF as well (and I only ever shoot MF anyways).

thank you
I'm glad I could help you out!

What if I want to use the record button on the Ronin to start/stop recording but also want to use the autofocus on the camera? 🤔
Thank You for dropping by 🔥
I have been waiting since the first day, but now I can't get my external monitor works, so disappointed...
Yes, this is an unfortunate side-effect of this update.
Filip thanks, but after connecting Ronin S to Sony A7III with MCC-C cable, the focus works but Sony does not see second card
Thanks for the video. How do you think, is a standard kit worth those 200 bucks? Look like focus control is not a big deal for sony a7iii
I think the standard kit is worth it. The focus control is worth it if you want to shoot controlled manual focus, otherwise the AF on the Sony is insanely good, so most of the time you can trust that!
It doesn’t work it shows in camera screen check the connected device?? How can I solve this?
Are you using the original cable that came in the box? Either the usb-c or usb-b cable.
I'm having this same issue. When I turn the camera on it says Check the connected device. Help!?!
Have you both checked what cable you're using? The multi cable that DJI made people buy for the Sony cameras does not work for this update, silly problem I know, but you need to use the MCC-C cable that originally came in the box.
hey thanks man for the tips! seems like simulate recording (two sd cards) is also diabled when connected...em i missing something?
Tony, yes, it seems that when using this update, you can only record on one card, simultaneous recording is disabled.
So do you think this wheel could be helpful while filming?
Yes, I've found this to be a problem with my Smallhd too. I've heard some monitors work though, lets hope there will be a fix in a future update.
Im using the multi cable, same one youre using. With all of these settings also and i can inly get the wheel to digital zoom and not pull focus. What gives? A7RIII Ronin S
thnks! so , its useless with a focusmotor with A7s II..... is it the same with this crane 3 too?
I'm afraid so, it will only work as a zoom option with the ii series cameras. I'm not sure about the Crane 3, I don't own one so I can't say for sure.
Followed your advice and it isn't working with my 85mm 1.8
What cable are you using?
It's work but Sir after I shoot a video when I get to see the result that what I shoot or how's the shot happens its not showing... I have to unplugged that cable to see the shot pls tell me the solution of this
Yes, I'm afraid that the follow focus features stops all video out options, so the only preview will be on the Sony screen.
@@PhillipSkraba Then it's a big problem I think .... because if we can't see the shot how we can go for the next shot
+Robennie It is a rather odd step forward, however the good news is that those cables should already be in the box.
Thanks for this. I thought the Ronin S focus wheel doesn't work with the A73 camera. This is great.
Geoff Wilkings Photography you’re welcome! I hope you have fun with it! Once you get the feel of the focus by wire it’s great!
Recond button works but not the focus wheel mate
Use only the MCC-C cable and you should be fine if you've followed all my instructions in this video.
so with the latest firmware of Ronin S/SC, you only need to buy the focus ring, not the whole mechanical focus motor?
The mechanical focus motor is for more detailed pulling focus, or for manual vintage lenses for example. It's a cool addition, but if you just want to pull focus with compatible lenses (the chart is in the description) then the focus wheel is all you need.
For everyone trying to do this on a7siii:
They moved the PC Remote next to ctrl with smartphone.
The. You cannot select a USB mode in the „old“ menu
Yep, the menu system changed a little in the S, it's funny though, I still use the a7III more.
For some reason I'm still only able to zoom, even after updating and following the steps in this video. Any ideas?
+Jordan Wende Hi Jordan, the problem I’ve usually come across is that the lens is not compatible yet. If you’ve set it up like shown it should work. Please check the compatibility chart to see if your lens is on the latest update. Which one are you using?
@@PhillipSkraba I have exactly the same... Camera and Ronin are updated... I can not change it...
Fantastic! Great that it's working! It's such a good feature to have on the Ronin-S. Have fun!
I'm sure I'll use it more one day for some project.

does this setup work with the DJI SC and the Sony a6500? I'm sure the firmware is very similar....
Hey, didn’t work for me... using mcc c and a7iii with 24-105 f4 G
This is so odd, I use a similar setup, I can see the 24-105 is compatible, awesome lens by the way! Try going through that tutorial once again, doing everything I did. It should work. Are you using the original MCC-C that came in the box? Have you tried the MCC-B too? That works as well.

Question is: Is the Focus pulling with the wheel linear or accelerated (like usually with focus by wire lenses) ?

I'm afraid that the follow focus option will not work with the a6500, as it uses the multi cable, not the mcc-c/b cables.
short and on point. thank you bro. subscribed
saw some say you need to buy new cable. can you please clarify which of the cables provided you need to use?
+c2aus Thank You, I appreciate it a lot!
Dope video man it definitely helps, only thing is when you have it set up like this, and press the record button it says
“can’t record in this recording setting”
Which before setting this up my uhs II card records perfectly fine?
+Tiberious Greene Hi Tiberious, I use a uhs II with no problems. Does it work with other cards?
You need to make sure Slot 1 is prioritized for it to work
That’s true 👌🏻
Thank you for the great video! Managed to get most things sorted. However, when I try to use the focus wheel my A7iii says 'This operation or setting not available as follows' and then shows: Zoom setting and optical zoom only. This is with an FE 3.5-6.3 24/240 lens. Doesn't the manual focus work with this lens or am I doing something wrong?
Niels van der Boom Hi Niels, I’m afraid that after looking at compatible lenses that are currently supported in this latest update, the 24-240 is not yet supported. Lets hope it’s in the next update!
@@PhillipSkraba Thank you. You did your homework better than I did!
+Niels van der Boom No problem, I’m happy to help!
@@PhillipSkraba Hi, thanks for the tutorial, but I've the same message
Awesome video. Can you still have a director use a monitor when you follow this work flow?
Thank You! You can, but with the a7III it'll make the camera screen go black when you connect it, so either the monitor or the small preview screen.
Thank you. I’m just mad that Sony camera won’t display the image in an external monitor because that would help with pulling focus on a monitor.
You're welcome! Trust me, you're not the only one!
@@PhillipSkraba smh right lol
Try changing the internal recording to HDMI 24p
Hi Philip, I have a Sony a7iii with 28 70 kit lens and I tried to connect ronin s focus wheel but it shows I just can use it for zoom. Do you have any suggestions for it?
Hi Alex, sure, this is usually when the wrong cable is connected. Using the mcc-multi will turn the wheel into a zoom, using the mcc-c/b, I recommend the c, will turn the wheel into a focus wheel. It's also best to use original DJI cables, some 3rd party cables do not work. Hope that helps!
Thanks Philip, do you think it will work with a Sony kit lens and MCC-C?
@@alexha5567 Believe it or not, the 28-70 is one of the lenses that is supported, so yes, it should work Alex.
Phillip Skraba thank you very much 👍🏻
@@alexha5567 Anytime!
hi Phillip! I followed exactly everything but with the Sony ILCE m3 it doesn't work. The lens I use is FE 2.8 / 16-35 GM. Can you help me?
Hi Anam, I use the same camera and lens with no problems. I've found that usually where people go wrong is they use the multi cable, use the usb-b or usb-c cable. Let me know if this was the problem.
@@PhillipSkraba does not work with either mcc-b or mcc-c :(
@@PhillipSkraba Resolved! What I was not doing was setting the MF mode on the camera and AF on the lens. Thanks anyway! :-)
@@MrsSounds Ahh yes, that will do it! Good news you got it working! Have fun!
Hey mate! Great video. I just recently got a Sony A7s ii and was considering the Ronin S, but wanted to make sure the focus wheel was compatible. Do you know if that will work?
I believe the “Multi” cable makes it work?
Sorry for the late reply, it must have got lost in the notifications! Well, if you click the 2nd link in the description, it will show you what cameras/lenses are compatible, and even though the focus wheel will work, I'm afraid it will only work using the multi-usb cable, rendering this update useless for you, as you will only be able to zoom, not focus. Only the a73 series cameras have the ability to focus using the wheel.
On RSC2 focus / zoom in custom settings selected.. from front dial can change focus.. but how too shift between focus / zoom..is there ney button too select /zoom .. ?
You'd have to use a different cable altogether to engage the zoom option.
thank u phillip
You’re welcome Sudhakar!
Hi, thanks for the tutorial, but I've the message "This operation or setting not available as follows"
If you've followed how I set it up and used the correct cable, it should work fine. What cable did you connect?
MCC MULTI and micro USB on camera
@@PhillipSkraba I’ve a FE 24-105 F4 G OSS
@@PhillipSkraba I’ve follow all settings and procedures that you explained in the video but it doesn’t work and I don’t know why :-(
@@PhillipSkraba I’ve solved it, the problems was the cable. Thank you so much😉👍
Awesome, nice and simple, job done.
Thank You!
Thank you so much!

Thanks but with an external monitor with Hdmi it dosnt work
No, I'm afraid it doesn't.
Wow, thank you so much!
Jaswati My pleasure, I hope it helped!
Mine only says checked connected devices... tried both wires.. said the same thing.. please help
I'm having the same issue
@@WillHaack ... hopefully someone can help us
@@WillHaack Have you followed the instructions here very carefully Will? What cable are you using and what camera are you connecting?
@@PhillipSkraba I have and I'm using the c
you said mcc-c cable, which is the type-c plug.
@@PhillipSkraba thanks a lot! really helps! I just bought the ronin s,looking forward to get hand on it
please what is the name of this cable? I'm from Brazil and I can't find it in my market or on Aliexpress
You need to buy it from the official DJI store or it probably won't work. It's the MCC-C cable.
@@PhillipSkraba Thanks man! I'm going after it tomorrow!
Have the improved the gutter on the focus push/pull?
Not that I've noticed, nope.
Hi Phillip, Im trying to use the focus wheel on my A7riii but when I turn the camera on it just says connecting and check the connected cable afterwards. Do you know why it does that?
Ps: I put all the settings the same way you did yours. Thanks, this is driving me mad. Cheers.
Are you using the right cable Nicolas? The usb-c cable is the one you need, and from other comments here, it should be an original DJI cable.
Will focus work with Sony A7 II? Or do you think they Will add this in the future?
I think they are trying to concentrate on the newer models as with everything, forcing people to update their equipment. It's just the world we live in. I have the same problem with some of my equipment and am upset that because of a lack of updates I will have to buy newer models to keep up with the technology.
so i bought the mcc multi cable because it was needed for sony cameras and now the mcc-c cable suddenly works?! am i right??
Thanks for all the info and the video! Good job!
@@deekays4 no problem, I'm happy to help!
Nice! Is there also a way to stop the camera from charging while connected?
My English humour kicked in for a second and I was about to write, take the battery out, but, in all seriousness, I'll power mine up tomorrow and take a look for you.
Does this work if you are using a metabones adapter?
I don't believe so, no.
Is this controlling the focus without the use of the motor?
Yes, that's correct.
And all Ronins have this capibiltiy? I don’t need to attach that gear teeth zip tie thing?
Sure, the RS 2 has the same deal, roll the wheel and the lens (if compatible) pulls focus.
Great tutorial bro: my steady shot went off when i uso focus. Is that right ?
+Umberto Aiti Yes that is correct Umberto, connecting to the Ronin-s in this scenario renders the IS useless. I don’t think it’s really needed though when on the Ronin-s.
Question, is it only works for native lens? I have Sigma 30mm f1.4 with e mount.
I'm afraid so, that the moment only native lenses work looking at the compatibility table. Who knows maybe in the future they'll add 3rd party lenses.
Very nice and informative . thanks you. One question pls. When i plug my ronin-s to my sony a7iii, the second SD card icon disappear although the camera is set for dual slot recording. The camera will only record on one slot. very unfortunate. any solution to that issue ? i must use my dual recording feature. Thank you in advance
Thank You! I only really use the single option, let me check this week and see if I have the same problem.
@@PhillipSkraba Thank you for trying and i hope it works with both cards at your end which will give me hope that it works.
