      @@Newambientmusic I think this teacher viewed her as a "great technician" - and she certainly has great ears! While I might prefer others for interpretation.....her aural/technical expertise is legendary. Her physical capability at the keyboard.....is probably unmatched. That's doesn't mean she was the greatest interpreter. Those who struggle at the keyboard.....might obtain a greater range of sound.

    She is a very gracious woman - and rightfully deserves her place as one of the finest and most formidable pianists in modern history. Given the current US administration's global internationalist leanings, it doesn't come as a surprise they selected her to receive this honor, in spite of her limited involvement in US musical life. In any event she represents a rare musical phenomenon and gift to mankind :-)

    • @erikgardetemps
      @erikgardetemps 5 років тому +1

      Martha fue una niña prodigio. ¿Qué tiene que ver el nivel cultural de Argentina en eso? Afortunadamente ella se fue de ese país y pudo desarrollar su arte y perfeccionarse en Europa. Gracias a su esfuerzo y su trabajo por todo el mundo, ella es hoy parte de la historia de la música universal y una de las mejores pianistas en todo el planeta, incluso hoy con casi 78 años. Si se hubiese quedado en Argentina tocando el piano, hoy sería una profesora de conservatorio jubilada, frustrada y con ideas suicidas.

Just TRY to imagine how the current unelected head of the US government (whose name I refuse to say or type -- let's just settle on "tramp" ) might deal with any classical musicians who might earn a Kennedy Center Award. I can't even put my mind there....

      I disagree.
      This kind of event is PR.
      Neither the government or Obama cares a single bit about what they try to promote here, we know that for sure.
      But at the very least, try to be somewhat believable when you want to look like you care, or at the very least let someone else do it.
      PR is a away of earning good reputation, but the backslash following a fail is both to be expected and justified, since it's just showing latent hypocrisy.

    Wow, this goes to show when they give out these lifetime awards to artists and scientists, they really have no idea who they're giving it to. Well, that and the last thing the recipient wants to be doing is accepting an award for his/her accomplishments. That remark she passed about how she was surprised that she was recognized that evening because she hasn't done much in this country. That has a hidden meaning. She basically said you people are clueless. If you know who this woman is, she must have been hating life. She doesn't talk to anyone and she loves cancelling concerts, but is definitely one of the greatest pianists ever

    There are far more bigots in this country than I ever realized. What does this honor have to do with political ideologies? Pres. Obama honored a great world renowned musician, Ms. Martha Argerich. Why be so mean spirited? Say something nice. If you can't do that, don't say anything at all. I really never knew classical music lovers were so mean. Ms Argerich's musical genius and achievements should not be degraded by such ugly comments, nor confused with liberal or conservative agendas. Whether you like his skin color or not, Pres. Obama is a brilliant human being who honored Ms. Argerich. Her performances are a way to get away from all that B.S., and an avenue for us all to enjoy and to let our prejudices take a back seat for a while. Music is a global language. Let's get on the same page and key, for once!!!!!

    So interesting to see all the petty remarks, ignorant of how artists are chosen, rather than knowledgeable of the praise that this artist deserves. Argerich's technical ability and musicianship are extraordinary, and I am ecstatic to see her recognized in the US. No pianist worth his or her salt could deny her preeminence or begrudge her this award. No outstanding American musician would dispute having been influenced and/or impressed by her work. It is stunning. Oh, and that thing about her hair--sexist.

      @@polka678 You are arrogant and stupid. According to you Martha is no better or worse that the world's worst piano player. Mozart was a genius. Of course you obviously deny that too. Savants are also nothing special either, right. Actually this sounds like Communism propaganda. There's nothing special about Bolt or Marta either, right?

    Wonderful honor, but I fail to see how she has contributed in any significant way to musical life in the U.S. (and I think she agrees)...a far more deserving pianist would have been the late Alicia de Larrocha, who should have been awarded during her life, or even posthumously...
    But I find it a bit shocking that no one told President how to pronounce her name correctly...he clearly has no idea who she is and what makes her talent so great (MA's talent as a pianist easily outshines even his as a politician...and that is saying something!!)

Martha is a diva in piano world, my idol, once I did spend half an hour chatting with her backstage in New York after a wonderful performance, it was a real privilege. I pray to God to give her long life.
