As a jazz pianist, it makes me very happy to find out that these great wonderful pianists want to play jazz and fell the joy and freedom of improvisation. I, in my turn, wish to play the piano with the mastery Martha has and Nelson had.
What a treat this is ! Two of the greatest pianists ever, both being so disarmingly nice and funny. You feel like you could have a drink and a laugh with them anytime. What a pity that Nelson isn't among us anymore. Hopefully Martha will go on for a long time to come. Here's a woman who gets older yet never ages.

Fortunately, these visual documents and audio recordings exist. Who knows Martha's pain for this great loss. They were really great friends. And they certainly continue to be in Essence.

I attended countless Freire concerts here in São Paulo, and looking back now I wish I could've attended more! And I couldn't be more thankful for this video - the wake of Nelson's passing earlier on this month obviously brought me here, since as a Brazilian national I'm still mourning the loss of one of our best musicians. His friendship with Martha is legendary, but to see the actual dynamics there involved is absolutely priceless.

Such a relief to see that people like Marta Argerich have to get into a new piece, too, first. Doing sight reading. I sometimes still think they just start playing everything 😊
What a treasure for now and posterity! Thanks Will; beautiful work. We need to get back to this kind of artistry, from humble and noble souls. Great stuff. They can actually make classical music fun. Lots of people can play well; playing with undisguised pleasure creates a new dimension. Love the piano topped ramshackle scores. Just playing is more compelling than being organized.

It is difficult to listen to Nelson's recordings now without weeping that he has lost his life. For the last two years often forced by circumstances of the world pandemic restrictions I have collected his recordings and watched so many performances and clips on this channel but the real sadness is that despite having tickets for two of his last concerts in the UK where both were cancelled due to his accident I will never meet him or hear him play live. For his friends family and colleagues it is a huge loss and continued sadness; no-one can say better than they how he suffered due to not being able to play; I can only imagine this was agony for him. Such a wonderful human being who devoted his life to music, May he now rest in peace.
18:18 only Nelson Freire could impress Martha Argerich like that. Then again, he was on another level most people never realized because he was so humble and so unpretentious. It took the profound intimacy between those two, and this awesome documentary by João Moreira Salles to provide us with a window into this magical world they shared for more than sixty years.

The fact that Nelson can sight read the entire Widmung by Schumann/Liszt, at tempo, without missing a note, is absolutely insane to me

Martha: "É muito bonita, né?"
Nelson: "É... Estranha né?"
Martha: ?
