Spirit pass of a "sugarhead" whisky with a single thumper.

  • G'day guys, been a while since I posted anything - 2020 has turned out to be a turd-burger both financially and mentally. Will hopefully start posting some more vids as I dig my way out of the hole.
    This is a spirit pass I did on a rough sugar-head whisky fermented off the grain bed remains of both corn and barley mashes.
    Shows why I love thumpers, not that efficient energy-wise maybe, but they do a beautiful job of separating out cuts whilst retaining flavor.

I watched your keg still build a few years ago and thought to myself all that should be fairly cheap to build I even built the shotgun condenser and the deflag just as you did in the your video, I never would have imagined I have what I do in it but I totally just love this thing it came out super nice and it's (Still) cheaper then buying new And I just keep adding to it Thumper gin basket PID I definitely thank you for some of your inspiration in The Craft!.🍻🥃

    You had great compression with that run at 80% to 85%.
    I often thought about adding ball valve return from the thumper to a trap and then into the boiler (high above liquid level).
    That way it provides an overflow and/or a relief dump if you have to shut down and startup again later. Then you can dump excess and leave only 8-12 liters (2 to 3 gallons US) in the thump. (Depending on valve height placement in thumper)
    Would love to see two retorts on your rum run. Your setup is impressive.
    Cheers APD!

    • @AngryParrotDistillery
      @AngryParrotDistillery  4 роки тому +1

      Heya big Ed!
      Had an overflow tap on this single thumper setup.
      Was able to manually drain back to the kettle when I "guesstimated" the thumper was getting full, I really need some kind of sight-level to be able to eyeball it.
      An automated draining setup like you described would be "the bomb" and would definitely put the whole thing on rails.
      Something to look at down the track, I'm currently getting my head around continuous distillation and fractionating columns - will have to be some videos out of that mess. 🤣

    Your distilling knowledge far surpasses mine, but I have to say, I have found I can save myself a whole lot of time when running my moonshine still by whacking a butane campstove burner under my thumpkeg and getting it close to temp once the boiler has gotten within range, rather than waiting for the steam from the boiler to heat up the mash in the thump. Saves me a good couple of hours...! Just thought I'd mention it.

    • @AngryParrotDistillery
      @AngryParrotDistillery  3 роки тому +1

      Heya Chris, yep agree.
      I've ended up putting element mounts in the thumpers for that reason - can slowly bring them up to temp and cut them loose just short of the point where the vapor from the kettle starts doing its job.
      However, some of the time I just put a little less in the thumpers and don't bother with the preheat - thumpers come up to temp real quick under that scenario.
      My knowledge ain't that great - I'm still learning everyday.
      Happy Distilling!

      @@AngryParrotDistillery yeah, i hear you about lesser amounts in the thump, but i recently accidentally overfilled my thump and ran it without realizing what i had done... the boiler struggled to keep it up to temp and i ended up with a higher yield, but it took a couple of hours longer... it's an art to find the right balance!

      Oh shit! I was worried about thumpers overfilling while running to the point I ended up putting sight tubes down the sides of both mine just so I can check where they are at during a run and drain them back into the kettle if needs be.
      The very first one I ever made was great, put out good product and was easy to clean but a little undersized.
      I cracked open at the end of one run to find it almost completely fill - ulp.
      Has worried me ever since.

    My setup is almost identical to yours , mines a 60 and use a keg as a thump which runs thru 30ft of 3/4 worm thats in a 50gal barrel, i might say the 50 i use for worm never gets hot other than the top 12-15in, below the thermocline its still cool, i never have to add or circulate water in worm even thru a 20+ hr run, no cooling issues at all

    Those stainless spirals you use to keep the coffee filter away from the side of the funnel is pretty cool.
    Are they something that you bought or made?
    It seems to do a wonderful job of keeping the liquid moving through the filter.💪👍🥃

      G'day fella,
      Made, they're lengths of stainless steel TIG welding filler rod, I just bend them into those chevron type zig-zigs and bend them in the middle so they sit nicely in the funnel.
      Without them the filters just sit flat against the sides of the funnel and only the tip really drains - defeats the purpose of a big filter.

    hi Angry Parrot, the size of the pipe going into and out of your thumper, the flow rate looks good. And how do you compare the taste of the likker compared to 2 runs on a pot still ? Your parrot has come up good and doing its job well.

    • @AngryParrotDistillery
      @AngryParrotDistillery  4 роки тому +1

      G'day Cameron,
      Pipes in/out of the thumpers are 3/4 inch copper.
      Bit of pressure there but not enough to cause any grief and it's setup so the system can't get blocked up. I should put a few blow-off valves on the vessels to make it all super safe.
      The liquor taste great, possibly not the same as two fully dislocated distillations - maybe more like 1.5 distillations but comes out tasting fine.
      Cheers - the bigger parrot is necessary now with the increased output, upsurge in the smaller on was giving false readings.
      Happy Distilling!
