Twin thumpers, Barbados-style rum still ... with corn whiskey ?!?!

  • Finally got around to setting up my twin-thumper rig a few months back (August 2019).
    Had the two thumpers sitting around for about a year now and never got around to using them with moving workshops and all that.
    Rather than running rum thru' it which is my intended goal I ran a test using a fermented out corn-whiskey mash that I had at hand.

    You should put 2 3 way valves on the top of each thumper so that you can vent the vapor through the condenser when you shut down.

      G'day Beard, yeah I was happy with it - keen to see how it does with rum which was the reason I built the two thumpers.
      The result it gives - like a reflux still running at low abv and tailing off right at the end was pretty neat.
      Have run this config' again since and the outcome is repeatable without the smearing albeit a little slower than normal.
      I got a bit impatient with the run for the first time ever - hence the overheating and smearing, would have been worse with rum.
      Will probably end up adding element ports to the still and try 4x 1500W elements as opposed to 2x3000W ... or maybe look at some custom low density jobbies to speed things up without scortching or smearing down the track.
      Happy Distilling fella!

    One more question for you - do you cut/grind the Tri-clamp ferrules to fit the curve of the tank(s) when you TIG weld them or do you leave them 90° cuts and just weld with a gap? Looking to TIG a tri-clamp ferrule to a half barrel keg for a beer brewer set up and can’t decide if I need to find a way to cut them to fit. Thanks!

      They're both around 70-80L volume each (I guess that around about 20gallons each give or take).
      They were a large s/s hot water cylinder I cut in half.
      Kettle they're being run off is around 180-200L.

      Heya Big Ed, nah was still plenty of headroom in the thumpers even at the end of the run.
      I gunned the power controller at the beginning then eased it back ... I think that was my undoing.
      Have done subsequent runs, not gunned them at the beginning and run them nice and slow - they've come out crystal clear.
      Was just a case of me being too impatient which ain't good in fishing or distilling. 😊

    How do you remove your corn solids?

    • @AngryParrotDistillery
      @AngryParrotDistillery  5 років тому +1

      G'day Chris,
      I ferment on the grain - currently only about 55gallons at a time.
      Once the ferment is done I let it settle out for a week or two and then drain the mash liquid down to the grain bed.
      You do lose a bit of liquid that way but then theres other things you can do with the yeast laden grain bed afterwards. 😊
      I also mill my grain quite fine too, like a fine polenta, so theres probably not as much left in the way of solids as if I was using a coarser cracked or flaked corn.
      Happy Distilling!

    • @christurner1791
      @christurner1791 5 років тому +1

      Angry Parrot Distillery thanks mate.
      I have a 200L mash that’s fermenting on the grain at the moment and I’m not looking forward to straining it all out...
      (I boiled, blended then mashed the corn, so there’s a heap of fine particles in there)

    What liquid do you put in the thumpers? just some wash?

    • @AngryParrotDistillery
      @AngryParrotDistillery  5 років тому

      G'day Danny, in this case I just had some of the same wash as in the still.
      Cool thing with thumpers tho' is you can put a variety of stuff in there.
      You can run them with distilled material from a previous run, low wines, backends .... you can also put macerated material in there (citrus, herbs or apples for instance) to impart flavor ... kinda like infusing a gin.
      All up to your imagination! 😊
      Happy Distilling fella!
