When I started doing portraits I would trace the main features and outlines while learning how to really draw what I was seeing. Eventually after getting really good at shading and replicating what I was seeing I stopped tracing and moved to a similar system to what he’s using. Now I just start every portrait on the right eye and just build from there, left eye, nose, mouth, cheeks, outline of the head, ears, forehead, hair. Never stop drawing!
Darrell thank u so much this will help me allot i wanted to get away from grid and this is awesome this is exactly what i been looking for can't wait to try it out ..thank u for being such a great teacher
Hi Darrell :) Thank you so much for taking time out to share your awesome talents with everyone, I love the way you teach art, you make it so easy to understand, I also love the excitement and enthusiasm you portray when you share your wonderful knowledge... I know exactly how you feel when it comes to drawing, I get so involved that hours pass by ...just lock me in a room with pencils and paper and I am in my element LOL!!!.... I have been drawing faces since I was a little girl and still continue doing it to this day, if I see a piece of paper and pencil available you can bet I will draw faces...they fascinate me, but unfortunately through all the years of doing this I still cannot get the knack of shading, I keep trying, but I either do it too dark or too light...and I am never sure when to change pencils or the right pressure etc......in the end I end up with a semi flat drawing... I so want to have my drawings delicate and realistic looking.... I practice for hours, (and years too LOL!!! as mentioned) I have watched many of your wonderful videos and practiced and still get very frustrated that I still can't do it.....I won't give up, as I love drawing too much, but I must admit I do get a bit down at times....anyway.....sorry didnt mean to ramble on....lol!!!... I really appreciate this video and I am looking forward to the next one and more :) keep up the great work you are a wonderful inspiration not only to me but to others... it is so nice of you to share your knowledge and talent with everyone.... Thank you so much :) your Art work is Beautiful, so delicate and soft where needed, such realism and character....Just Awesome.... love everything you do :) wishing you and your team a lovely day :) Magz :)
Happy spring and summer hi to the five pencil merhod Keith I am saying every one over there keep on drawing that’s what pick me up every time thank u Derral Tank
I've tried the Loomis method which consists of grid lines. Drove me crazy and my drawing did not look at all realistic. Looking forward to trying Mr. Tank's straighted method.
Darell I have learned so much from your tutorials, I deeply want to say thank you, I really appreciate your style and method of instruction! You have helped me to find a calm patient stylistic approach, versus my old rush and get it done attitude (because of which I lost my desire and enjoyment and now after my 20 year 'hiatus' I have come to enjoy sketching and drawing all over again! I do have only one question: When you do your layouts, by sliding the ruler and hands all over you drawing surface and by holding each, the portrait and your drawing g surface, all the while not wearing a drawing glove, are you not concerned with oils from your fingers being spread onto your drawing surface?
I have been using grids for some time, and I disagree that the grid lines can be difficult to remove. You just have to use a light touch when drawing the lines. And the texture of the paper can affect the removablity of the lines. I use smooth Bristol, and I have no problem removing lines. When I use a photo, I make a copy of it on plain printer paper for making the grid. Then I use the original photo for detailed reference.
31:50. He's making the drawing 1.5 bigger than the reference. However, the mark of the outside corner of the eye, it's too close to the center line, compared to the reference photo. I think Darrel got it wrong there.
all you are doing is drawing the outline the rest of the work is yours I use a grid because i want my drawings to be exact, if your using a pencil its drawing.
You do realized this lesson was taken to several parts do you? If this already makes you impatient or hard to understand don't expecting you can be good just watching short videos of tutorial
I remember buying Darrel's DVD about 20 years ago, where he draws a baby. It was a brilliant way for me to learn about using a proportional divider.

What a wonderful Teacher
Thank you for this, really great information and you teach really well
What a cool way to draw acurately,if you don't't have a proportional divider! Thanks a lot!
Thank you good sir for all your wisdom.
Found your channel the other day, love the content.
Have only recently discovered you, Darrel. WONDERFUL!

I don’t understand his measuring at all in the “Lazy Cat” tutorial. Do you understand how he measures the tick marks?

Needing some clarification on the photo/paper. It's a regular photo glued to the paper that was suggested to add the thickness?
You should do evry kind of drawing with evry tool and also with minuum tools also
is project paper the same as presentation paper?-ty
Leonardo Da Vinci used a grid. Nobody is going to tell him he's not a real artist.
Reportedly, Van Gogh and Durer did as well. Norman Rockwell is said to have projected and traced from photographs.
Hi derral tank u doing teacherrrrrrr
How many people watching this know Norman Rockwell used a projector for his drawings?

The block GRID system is MUCH quicker & FAR more accurate -----simpler too ---!
all you are doing is drawing the outline the rest of the work is yours I use a grid because i want my drawings to be exact, if your using a pencil its drawing.
Very difficult technique to learn by people
Honestly.... He talks too much. I'm not looking to make a friend. I just want to hear the technique 🙄
I have been doing pencil drawings for 64 years. This video is a total waste of time.
This is so complicated and risks a person getting bogged down in just doing dots that mean nothing. Where is the art in this? None.
