      Thank you Julia, I appreciate the compliment. I'm sorry that I didn't know your dad's name, I met so many reenactors that week at Bannack! He has such a great face and was a real pleasure to work with, please pass along my regards to him. I have lots of photos of him, some with him in this outfit, some of him as a prospector, which I'm planning on doing a painting of. If you would like, I can get you a print of the painting when I finally do it if you'd like. You can get in touch with me at atk1961@aol.com and I'll let you know when that happens. Very nice demo. I am a retired mathematician that took up painting mostly floral and water landscapes in water color. I have been wanting to expand my horizons in to figurative painting and have been lazy about practicing prior to any real attempt because just by eye getting a good likeness out of my hand is laborious. I had never thought of the proportion divider and now after your video I am soon to buy one off of Blick art supplies. Thanks again, great demo!

    I've seen these proportional dividers before but never tried one. I've used the grid method but I don't really like it, to me it seems to take the life out of a drawing. I think I'll try one of these dividers and see how it goes. Nice rendering by the way!

    I have used these dividers before, but your narrative is not particularly clear for the person who has never used such a device. One word you unfortunately avoided is "ratio". If you are taking a photo and increasing it 4 times, you will have a 1-4 ratio (1:4). Once the divider is set to your desired ratio, that ratio is maintained throughout all your other measurements. Changing the divider's ratio will distort your measurements and final drawing. One other comment concerning the dividers; some manufacturers make the dividers out of wood, plastic or metal.
    The tips of the wooden dividers are rather blunt (1/8 "). Not only does this reduces the accuracy, but the wooden dividers weigh more and are a little on the bulky side. You can increase the accuracy by carefully placing a "notch" or mark in the middle of each pointed end.
    The plastic dividers have a more pointed tip and the accuracy is much better.
    The metal dividers usually have the sharpest tip. They are machined to better tolerances, but they also cost considerably more.
    If money is a concern, I would recommend the proportional dividers made out of plastic.
    I enjoyed your drawing and your candor about not following what you preach. :)

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  5 років тому +2

      Hi Ken, thanks for the great comment. You know, I've been asked this question before about using a tool like a divider and it being cheating, and it's a good question. Here's how I look at it. It's just a tool to get me where I'm going. All it does is load the front end of the drawing with the correct points as to where things start or stop. If someone was to come up to my drawing board and look at all those marks, could they then do the drawing? Of course not! The marks are just the beginning, albeit an accurate beginning. You now have to make sense of all those marks and by making decisions with your pencil in your hand, turn them into a beautiful work of art. If we artists weren't allowed to take measurements as we went along, then all those times you've seen an artist drawing or painting where they hold out their brush (or pencil) to the model and use it to measure something, they would be cheating, right? When I went to university and took life drawing, this was one of the techniques we learned. Would our professors have taught us to cheat? Of course not, they were simply giving us the tools to be better artists. Architects used these all the time, would you consider that cheating? Well, that's my 2 cents for what it's worth (not even 2 cents). The bottom line is that you can use it if you want, but if you're not comfortable with it, it's good as it can be if you want to skip it. LOL! But I sure do appreciate you asking the question and I hope my answer helped. Draw On!!!

      Thanks so much Steve-O, I really appreciate the share! When I lived in Minneapolis and started painting historical subjects, I painted mountain men (Jeremiah Johnson was my favorite movie for a long time), and fur trappers, since there was so much history of it in Minnesota. I LOVED going to the rendezvous that were held in the area and getting my reference from the men and women who dressed in period dress. I learned so much about the history from them and love it to this day. Of course the grizzled old mountain man in this drawing was just a romantic notion of what they would have looked like. Rarely did they live this long, right? Thanks buddy!

    Isn't this cheating, to me drawing, sketching, is about studying who /what is front of us . Its about looking ...really looking and mark making .... and practice practice ...this device to me is for lazy artists who cannot be bothered with the skill of learning the craft through lots and lots of practice.

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  5 років тому

      so when you draw, make sure to never allow yourself to take any measurements, even with your pencil, and don't use your pencil to check your angles. Otherwise, you're cheating...and for you purists out there, no using photography, only live models, cuz otherwise it's cheating. And no electric lights, cuz Rembrandt didn't have electric lights, only daylight and candles. Good luck.

      @@jamesharoldbardwell2182 I try to respond to all comments on this channel! Everyone is important to me, especially ones with which I don't agree. Please don't take my answer as not valuing your thoughts on this subject. Your opinion is common, I've been hearing it all my professional life. But, since I was taught to use it at university by my art professors, I guess it's just what becomes normal to you that makes something cheating or not.If you would, take some time to watch my other drawing videos, you'll see that this one is the first I've used this tool. I use it only when I'm trying to get a spot on likeness, or when I'm under a time crunch to do a quick draw (1 hour to produce a framed saleable work of art that gets auctioned off). I want everyone to know that artists have been taught to draw with all different kinds of limitations and tools too. This one has been used for at least a couple of hundred years and I'm comfortable with using it and teaching others to use it. Glad to hear about this proportional divider thing! I will need to look into getting one!
    To enlarge accurately I've been doing a much more complicated method for years (I invented) with a scrap paper a ruler and a calculator. First I figure out the mathematical multiplier to enlarge, ensuring it will fit on the canvas or page correctly. Which I write on the scrap paper so I don't forget! Then I measure the reference with a ruler; using the calculator and multiply using the formula. Next I use the ruler on the enlarged drawing area and mark off the points. Also checking angles and relations as I go. Switching to free hand as much as reasonable.
    Much slower but accomplishes the same thing! I also use this techniques with my own original sketches, thumbnails or paintings/drawings I'm recreating at a larger scale.
    Very enjoyable and informative video! I have been loving tone paper as well! If in Canada I highly recommend the store Dollarama as it has small $4 travel tone tan kraft sketchbooks that have fantastic paper for such a low price!
    First video of yours I've seen and It made me want to pull out my similar tools and make a greyscale at large size.... Maybe I'll go get a proportional divider first! LOL

      You can seal charcoal drawings if you don't use white charcoal on them, but I usually don't and didn't with this drawing (since it has white). Using a spray fix can darken the color of the drawing, though if you put on several light coats rather than one heavy one, it probably won't. I have never used mine other than on a photo so I'm wondering how it would work on a live modle as if you were using your pencil to get the measurements. Enjoyed your video and keep posting as I will follow. Thank You!

      It would probably work on a live model, as long as you keep your arm extended the same amount every time...just like when you use a pencil ✏️ 😉

    A good old cartoon joke depicts an artist who finds himself in hell after he's passed, and the devil looks up his life in his big book on people's evil actions. And the devil says: "Well, well, well... it seems that in 1974, while rendering a figure in charcoal, you failed to first block in major masses and shadows to gain an overall feel for the composition, but instead, dove right into facial details". So Steve - be cautious! 😉

      rajapkhse, I'm so sorry that you can't get your hands on one in your country. If you search for "making a proportional divider" here on UA-cam, you can find a couple of tutorials on how to make one. Here is a link to Mix Paint Repeat's channel's (no relation to my channel) tutorial. This would only work if you have access to power tools though. If you wish, let me know if this is something you will try, I'd love to know if you make one. ua-cam.com/video/Ts6bRWeyHOQ/v-deo.html ~Steve

But when my children started drawing it encouraged me to start back up as the year pass I'm ok but it seems I can't get as good as I was then this is much helpful. First time to your channel, very nice drawing! Are you using graphite pencil and then later adding charcoal? Also the white you are using, is that white caulk or white charcoal (if there is such a thing)?

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  5 років тому +2

      Hi Chris, I'm not using any graphite, or pencils on this. It's either willow charcoal or charcoal pencils. Graphite has a shine and makes the paper resistant to working charcoal over the top of it, so it's best to avoid working both mediums together. The white is either a stick of Conte or a General's Charcoal White Pencil #558. I use them both in this video. Hope that helps and thanks for watching. Let me know how it goes for you!

    Those divider are pretty amazing! I used to do alot of western art work. Most of the subjects were from memory and experiences. Usually I would make a small sketch and get the thing mapped out then move to draw it on larger drawing paper, watercolor paper or what have you. Every once in awhile I'd have trouble with enlarging the drawing and get the proportions right. Those dividers would have been the ticket!

    Hello, I am an artist up in Flagstaff, about your commentary on releases, I have found you really dont need them. I do alot of musicians and celebrities. so try to get their permission, though I have asked specific few and have got response from only 1, hence is one of the reasons I have done so many of him. The only person you may need permissions from would be the photographer if you are not using your own photos as that may infringe on some copywrite law otherwise if someone is out in public they dont have any expectation of privacy and that includes celebrities and those can and are often referred to as fan art. So while it is good practice to ask permission you dont need absolutely need it

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  5 років тому

      Hi Mel, it's good to hear your perspective and I agree that I've never had anyone come back and challenge my right to use my images of them. And I don't try to get model releases from everyone if, let's say, I've been invited onto a ranch for a branding by the ranch owner or foreman. That'd be overkill and a hassle for everyone concerned. But I do like to get it for models I'm hiring for a shoot, just like a photographer would get. I look at getting signed model releases as insurance. Like they say, I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. But really, it's whatever you're comfortable with. Thanks for watching, commenting and Draw On!!!

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  4 роки тому

      Hi Jack. I take my own photos either at artist's photo shoots that are set up, or I set up my own shoots. A good place to start is going to different reenactment events, like a Rendezvous in which the people who participate in dressing and living like mountain men era of the 1820s-1840s. But really, if you aren't into period paintings, just find someone who's face you find interesting, ask them If you can take some portrait type photos and do a photo shoot of your own. After the first one is under your belt, you'll find it much easier to ask. Always offer to give them a print of the artwork as incentive and offering a small amount of money for their time is always appreciated. 10-20 bucks should do it. Family members will usually sit for free!!
