Here are some great ways to transfer an image to your canvas, paper or panel. In this video I'll show you the grid method, how to use a proportional divider and I have some tips for sketching in general. 00:00:00 graphite contaminating paint 00:01:19 sealing off graphite 00:02:48 rubbing in backside with graphite 00:03:46 grid method 00:12:08 proportional divider Have fun painting!👍
Probably one of the best instructional videos I have seen , especially for people like me who are making an entry into the art Multiverse. Thank you for this. Awesome stuff!!!
the proportional divider also really works well to to put things from real life on the canvas. something like still lifes for example. you can also use wooden figurines to draw someone in a pose and add them to you scene
Great video!- first time coming across. Love your humour too 😁 always drew, and all kinds of things but little painted..have all the tools etc you mentioned..never knew about using Gesso as an overlay on top- excellent tip and (and even though I have the tools..I had not yet used them yet, or either have not used them in/ for my art..you’ve definitely have inspired me in the direction to do more painting in my array of art mediums. 😊. Thank you!
I'm glad it was helpful! When you're an absolute beginner, there are so many new things to learn! Don't get overwhelmed and try to enjoy the process of learning. As long as you just dare to paint, dare to mess up etc. you'll quickly master the basics. Then of course there'll always be new challenges, but that's what makes it fun 👍👍👍
I just found this while looking for something different, was very interesting to watch, I am hearing impaired, and often have trouble comprehending people with accents etc.. but, I was able to understand your tutorial very well, you are clear, and explain things well, not too fast which is good, sadly for me also, being vision impaired, I will never be able to do drawing and painting, only for the fun of making a mess, but thank you for the entertaining, and very much informative tutorial, I enjoyed it and now I also know why some drawings also had lines all over them :) ..
Thanks for your comment and just continue painting and drawing! Creating is fun and healthy. Realism is only just one of the endless list of possibilities!🎨👍👍👍
Thanks Toon ---(you sound Dutch ). so am I ---been a professional wildlife artist for over 50 years --never use freehand --always the grid --as a lion or buff or Kudu -- can easily be distorted and look weird -so accuracy is of utmost importance!
Yes of course! Whenever I have deadlines and accuracy is important, the grid is the most reliable tool! Ja, ik ben Nederlands haha, hartelijke groeten👍👍
I can fully understand that. It's also great due to the fact that you can first try it on sight and then use the divider as a tool to check yourself. The feeling is totally different indeed. But sometimes, from a business point of view (when I have deadlines with a painting) I use grids to spend as little time as possible with the sketch. But then still I prefer rather big squares, at least 10x10cm.
@@toon-nagtegaal I guess I like more of an improvisation factor. But now that I am wanting placement of key elements more accurately, I have been doing a rough mockup of my composition from my reference pics on photoshop then using the proportional divider for some key elements when needed. My paintings are usually stylised.
That's true, but not everyone wants fast + 100% perfection. Freehand sketching is slow and can be rather inaccurate as well, but it can be a very enjoyable process. The proportional divider can be a nice tool for people who like a little bit of freedom and want to roughly check themselves now and then.
Maybe that's because this isn't a portrait video? The title of the video is: transferring images to canvas. These are just tips helping you to put up a sketch.

Dankie Toon --- ek hoop jy sal jou e pos vir my stuur ? Groete --Carl
Tuurlijk, dat is: info@toonnagtegaal.nl 👍
I find the proportional divider handy when relative proportions are more important. Gridding seems too mechanical for me.
I can fully understand that. It's also great due to the fact that you can first try it on sight and then use the divider as a tool to check yourself. The feeling is totally different indeed. O yes of course, it's a great tool for these situations!
❤🎉
Its very inefficient --grid method I have used for over 50 years --dead accurate and fast !

Proportional divider is cumbersome and slow ---scrap it !
That's a matter of taste, I just want to show possibilities.
This is the most confusing video of a portrait I have ever seen. You’re all over the place.
