I’m super jealous of the “first time” Tool Journey in front of you. One of those things you wish you could relive for the first time over and over.

Haven't listened "intently" to these two songs for at least a decade. It feels like greeting two old friends from my distant past. YES, a draining love when you're too young to understand or even comprehend your own feelings about it. He would have stuck the knife in if he could have but his undying love prevents him. I always felt the contempt of the song was directed at "the love" more than "the person."

These songs are so groovy and badass! The vocals, guitar, bass, drums, lyrics, everything is awesome. Great reaction once again! I get what you say about feeling the music. For me TOOL is about feeling the flow of the songs and getting lost in the music, and then analyzing the songs afterwards. You understand the band perfectly :)

Wish more people, once they've listened to a few Tool songs and want to hear more, start from the beginning and work they way towards the newer pieces. Listening to random tracks I feel don't catch what the band was going for when they put together their album. Also, you can better understand the mental state of mind they were in at the time. You guys are going about it the right way, to me.

      This.
Even more so for the albums following Undertow. I don't enjoy some songs unless I'm listening to the album as a whole (Schism is one of the songs I feel this way about, I'm not a huge fan of the song alone but love it when listening to the album).

A couple of things to consider: After Undertow, Tool changed bassists from Paul D'Amour to Justin Chancellor. See if you can hear the difference. Chancellor has been with the band ever since Aenima. He was in Peach, a UK prog rock band that supported Tool. The song You Lied on Salival is a Peach cover. When performing live, Maynard is rarely center stage. I've seen them live 4 times in the last 20 years, and he is always in the back and off to one side usually shrouded in darkness. Adam, Justin ,and Danny are front and center and well lit. Just something to know because it makes a statement that the band is about their music and not one member, AKA a front man.. Also the artwork/visual performances at their shows is fucking phenomenal. Check out Alex Grey. He has been involved in their artwork and album art, ie Lateralus...

It's uncanny when listening to that Peach album how evident it was Justin belonged with Tool. The band really hit their stride once he joined up. Plus their cover of You Lied is not only great but features Buzz Osborne of Melvins.

I noticed you have Aldous Huxley on your shelf. In Brave New World, he has a paragraph where he mentions "Seven million souls... in an empested atmosphere".
The new tool album has a song called "7empest", as in tempest with a seven instead of a T, but it could also be seen as "seven-empest". I wonder if this is a nod to that book.
To empest is to infect, which I feel, makes sense given the album's title track is about inoculation against fear.

    • @blankpage111
      @blankpage111 4 роки тому +1

Adam Jones said in an interview that 7empest is because there are seven songs on the album

The intro to Crawl Away is a Bolivian pipe band who were just going by the Sound City studio one day. The song is called "Oruro, Tierra de Ensuenos" or "Oruro (a town and surrounding area in Bolivia), World of Dreams"

    Really great job guys.
My personal take on this entire album has always been it is/was an internal dialog and reconciliation. Though my point of view on what the roots of the cognitive dissonance of the protagonist have changed after the subsequent albums came out.
I do love the ambiguity of the lyrics, I believe it is intentional and everyone is right on their meaning if they an being introspective.
Looking forward to more from you two. Thanks for your effort.

Swamp song is like the stepbrother of "The Outsider" from A Perfect Circle, the lyrics are on the same subject. Speaking of APC, I really hope you will consider giving their discography a shot as well. Most leaves them pretty much aside, but the reality is that it represents a large part of Maynard's personality, a much more emotional side, and I'm shure you will enjoy it so much too

Love when you close your eyes. I know you're in the music when you do. Swamp Song is about drug addiction... "Why don't you get out, while you can?" She loved drugs more than she loved him. He warned and warned her. She didn't listen. "If you love you'd you'd let me" she says. She didn't see that his warning was his love for her. He loved her absolutely, and she just loved her drugs. He ended up feeling, that's the way you want it? Have it

When you make it to the "10,000 Days" album, please make sure that before you listen to the songs "Wings for Marie" and "10,000 Days," which have to be played back to back, that you also listen to the song "Judith" by "A Perfect Circle" right before it. I would recommend doing all three in a row and read up on the history of his mother's condition and her passing before listening to them, and having lyric videos for those. Once you know the history and hear these songs, you will get emotional...just want you to be prepared for that.

You two are doing a great job! Please don’t feel you have to give high marks to a song or songs just because you may insult a few Tool fans. I’ve been with them from the beginning. Undertow became my favorite album due to my favorite song being on it. Crawl and swamp are great songs, but as you travel further along the Tool path, I’m quite sure you’re going to find a song that reaches out and grabs you. Then you’ll be in a quandary as to whether previous songs can compare to that/those songs. Once you’re further along your Tool journey, go back to songs you’ve listened and I’m quite sure you’ll find something you missed that now really grabs your attention and makes you want to hear it again!

In my opinion, this is your channel and people watch for your perspective and interpretations. Music can be "heard" many various ways just as different people will interpret poetry or art differently influenced by all the many factors in their life to this point. (Location, culture, education, friends, etc.) That is to say I would encourage you to do what works for you. Take notes and conduct your reviews in a manner that suits you. People may then discuss different perspectives and views, ideally.
Just my opinion. All the best to you.

You’re missing the perspective. Instinctually we think it’s a relationship with a woman, but in fact the person he’s trying to get through to is himself. If every word in every song is spoken to himself about himself, then it changes the meaning. It’s like having parallel stories. Some people like to stay on the surface, and others like to dig deep.

  • @caseyvannoy2703

There is an interview with Maynard somewhere on UA-cam where he says that he enjoys the "benefits" of being on the road, particularly in his younger days. If you look at Swamp Song from that perspective, it would seem to me that someone he was involved with turned up uninvited at one of his shows and was unhappy with what she saw.
    That woman meant nothing
You're dancing in quicksand - do you really want to know what goes on at our shows
You're only knee deep going in and you may never come back again - if you find out the truth you wont come back
No one told you to come
Something else to keep in mind as you take this journey...Tool have never ever published the lyrics to their songs. They are not on the album sleeve, or in the CD booklet or even on their website. All of these lyric videos are great and I think most of them are accurate with conveying the lyrics, but I would recommend keeping open the slight possibility that the lyrics in the video are wrong.

I thought I had been fed every Tool reaction video by now. With a couple rare exceptions, they're all the same anymore. Half of them just read what people say in the comments and then repeat it in the next video as if they're some sort of fan of the band. It's gotten so repetitive and they all seem "fake" at this point. Yet here's a well organized reaction with a ton of insightful thoughts. Shame it took me going down a long deep UA-cam rabbit hole to find this video. These are the Tool reaction videos UA-cam should be feeding everyone, not some "Rappers React" type of channel. No offense to them, but there's just no thought provoking content there. Here I leave with new thoughts about songs I've heard thousands of times. It's so much better than "oh, i like this part" and "Danny Carey is a Beast".

You should check out Cam Cole. He sings, plays guitar, and plays drums with feet, all at same time. His best songs are Tattoo Rings, Myself and So Blues, but all his songs are good. I love your reaction to Tool songs, your analysis is great to see. I don't quite get on with your boyfriend/friend's analysis of already knowing the tracks and being off camera, I think it would work better with just your own reaction. Maybe I just prefer to see a first time reaction rather rather than having the benefit of comparing to latter tracks, or maybe I prefer someone to be on camera rather than off; it just feels a bit off. I do really like how you're listening to the older tracks though, picking up from where the band started.
