- In 1981 an infectious disease researcher at the National institutes of Health started noticing reports that clusters of gay men were being diagnosed with infections that were highly unusual in younger people. It would take a few years before the medical community identified HIV which, left unchecked, can develop into the deadly syndrome known as AIDS. Today, treatments and preventive measures have changed expectations about the disease - and, in the eyes of some, caused undue casualness about prevention. Rita Braver talks with Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and with playwright and activist Larry Kramer.

If you are reckless about where you dip your wick, why would you be less careless about religiously taking your meds?

Because they hadn't been--or seen--the worst of it. That's why it's not that big a deal to them! I'm reading a book now that tells of the early years and the way people suffered with this disease. it was really bad!

I wished they talked more about the change in the demographics of HIV/AIDS today than just that one bit at 7:10. 44% of HIV cases today in the USA are in southern states because of poorer access to healthcare, income inequality, and the stigma that comes with having HIV in a conservative area.

PrEP is Nat to supplement condoms, not replace them. You should also use condoms to prevent other STDs because PrEP is only for HIV

I believe it would be hard to categorize a "dangerous sexual partner". *I do get what you mean,* but nowadays I'd say that sometimes the hollyest looking person can be a trainwreck and eventually those who have alot of partners maybe can be more cautious. I take PrEP and see my doctor every three months to be tested again...... the only thing that was said that’s incorrect is that you don’t need to use a condom if you take PrEP .... because any reputable doctor will tell you over and over before he writes the prescription that you DO still need to use condoms and practice safe sex even with PrEP... 90% isn’t 100%
Aragorn Stellar they won’t just write u a life time supply of truvada (PrEP ) and say see you later.... if you’re at high risk which is the only way you’re getting a prescription (after an HIV test) they need u to come in and re test every three months....that’s the only way to keep getting the prescription ... see the doctor, HIV test, get the script with two refills..... repeat.....

Now that I'm in a committed relationship I stopped taking prep and only see my partner... but while i was taking prep it is true I needed to be retested every 3 months. And it does work.. they say to use a condom mostly cus 90 percent isn't 100 percent

That's not really why... and yes they do.... viruses are just very resilient and usually evolve slightly so medicines stop working. It just takes one, out of trillions, to have a special mutation that allows it to survive the medicine. Then it replicates and BAM it doesn't work anymore.
There is already a cure, like you said it doesn't make money. the cure was diagnosed back in 2013-14 I believe.

By and large most gay men are not living in denial of HIV and the statistics of new infections support this assertion. There will always be those doing the denial dance with any epidemic or pandemic. This was published in June of 2017. I am a full supporter for Prep but at the time this was published the campaign U=U was already well under way. That is those that have an undetectable viral load can not pass on the virus. Prep is great but people need to know that the CDC is also supporting U=U.
Last year I got pregnant and had the medical abortion. I was told that it was 98% effective in terminating pregnancy. 3 weeks later, I was still sick, had an ultrasound, I was STILL PREGNANT.
So PREP being 90% effective should NOT good enough to stop wearing a condom.
