There are certain songs I always thought shouldn't be covered, and this was definitely one of them. Luke did Tracy's masterpiece justice and introduced her to a whole new generation. Seeing those two together and the way they pulled off such a beautiful duet was awesome.
I think I understand what you mean. Some songs, when you cover it, you want to change it up a little, make it a bit fresh, otherwise what's the point? Like when Adam Lambert slowed down Cher's "Believe" to a ballad at the Kennedy Center Honors. And sometimes with songs like "Fast Car", you just do the song to honor such perfection.

How have I never seen any of your content before??? You are fabulous! I'm gen X and was already an adult when this song was first released. For those of us who had lower female voices (I'm a low-middle voice) hearing a "pop contralto" on the radio was EVERYTHING. Tracy cemented my love of contemporary, folky, indie music. All the color in her voice and the way she broke the rules of singing made room for other storytellers that sing in a lower register. Sure, we can talk about Joni Mitchell, Karen Carpenter, and even Sarah Vaughn with their magical voices. But Tracy was all the way gen X. And we love her for it.
I was blessed enough to see Ms. Tracy Chapman on her first international tour. Her album hit so huge she found herself performing on the same stage with the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Peter Gabriel. It was a tour to raise awareness and funds for Amnesty International. They had her booked to play for the audience as part of the afternoon line-up. Just her and her guitar. In front of _thousands_ of people in The Big O in Montreal, Canada. She was amazing. There are no words. I still hold the memory of first hearing the Fast Car released on the radio - it gave me chills that I can still feel. Thank you SO much for sharing this performance. Ms. Chapman... she is a Master. Hearing Luke Combs harmonize to her... _Fun fact_ - Ms. Chapman's guitar was made by a woman who lives in Calgary (Alberta), Canada. There's an interview with her on the local CBC radio show. It's worth a listen... - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
She was the show. Everyone else was extra after she was done. The other highlight of that show for me was Gabriel singing 'Biko' to a stadium glowing with lighter fire.@@heatherlundberg8634
To me, the best part about this song was just how joyful they both looked singing it. You could feel it. Luke looked like a kid in a candy store like he couldn't believe he was on the stage with Tracy. And Tracy seemed to be happy to be giving a live performance of her song again even though it has been her choice to be private. I think they sounded wonderful together. It was my highlight of the show.
hearing Tracy perform this - - I saw her live at the Amnesty International Concert in Philly right after Fast Cars was released - one of my favorite concert experience ever
I have missed Tracy so much, I know she is not super fond of celebrity but I hope we are all blessed with her presence in music and she puts out another album
It's true Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs do sound great together. I'm, however, so very impressed with your expert analysis and description of the notes, tones, and diction of each artist. You're indeed a great teacher!! Thank you!!🙏🏾🖤💯
I first heard this song in 1988 on MTV. Tracy had been attending college in Boston area a few miles from me. She sang in Cambridge Coffee houses and at subway stations .
This duet needs to be released. It was beautiful. Do you think folk singers are more attuned to having better diction when singing because the words are so important?
Really enjoyed this analysis. Her voice is so special, and Luke has a good voice too. I agree with you, I like the unison. This was my favorite performance of the night.
I think this resonates well to most becuase this rendition to me seems acknowledge the differences, the struggles in life and uniting together to walk on the same path to be someone.
It was a beautiful performance, no changes needed. The mad respect and thrill he shows watching her is priceless. Her and her voice are even more beautiful than when she first sang it. Best thing on tv in ages💞
She looks so radiant here. I've always loved this song. I loved it back when she released it, and I love Luke's version of it too. He didn't try to change it. He stayed true to this wonderful song.

All I need is the duet!!! Thanks for this breakdown. I’m old and have been struggling with the lyrics. 😂🤣 P.S. You ROCK!!! 🚀💥
I have a funny story about this song. Back in the 90's, I was on the Staten Island Ferry going past the Statue of Liberty, and there was a woman singing this song on the deck, playing the guitar. She sang it beautifully. Well, while she was singing a huge gust of wind came up and blew the money out of her guitar case that people were dropping in for her. I jumped out of the crowd watching, ran around the deck and collected up all the money and put it back in her guitar case, with another couple bucks I had. She looked me in the eye and said thanks, and continued singing this song. I'll never forget that. This song is so beautiful. I love that Tracy and Luke sang it together like this.
Favorite concert ever been to was at a Luke Combs concert August ‘23 in Philadelphia. Right before he came on there was a rain delay that was like 2 hours long. When he came out I was a little kid again
I cannot listen to Tracy Chapman sing without wanting to cry. I just remember my mom had cassette tapes of her music and we would play them on full blast volume and sing along while we were cleaning house or cooking. She was literally a part of the soundtrack of my childhood. This song and "Give Me One Reason" was my 2 favorites of hers. She really is a treasure.
I love how Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs both seem so excited for this moment. Five years ago, people probably would have said no way to the idea that “Fast Car” would be a Country hit, but I think that Luke Combs proved that that would have been the stereotype talking. “Fast Car” is a beautiful folk/soul song, so it shouldn’t be surprising that a genre so heavily influenced by folk and soul music would pick the song up and run with it.
This channel is about the delivery… Respect… But decades after her original release of Fast Car, in this 4th turning, with political realignment, wealth inequality, populism, geopolitical decoupling, and deaths of despair…. The lyrics are prophetic…
I was glad Luke Combs did this cover. I always loved the original Tracy Champman song. It was the best. I hope they release this duet because this is now my favorite version. Their voices compliment each other. I didn't think it could get better than the original.

My son, who was 11 when this song came out, called me to praise this performance and Tracy Chapman. It was like an anthem to me, and I played it endlessly. 🏆🏆🌺🌺 It’s not until you try singing the lyrics that you realize how unexpected the phrasing is, the cadence. In fact, it has a spoken word kind of rhythm in that it resembles a familiar speech pattern, like conversation. This is my FAVORITE grammy live performance EVER! So beautiful it had me it tears. Their voices together was PURE GOLD!
Tracy is always going to have a special place in my heart. She is a treasure.
This performance is beyond special in so many ways!❤️❤️❤️
Tracy's voice gives me goosebumps...she is special. Love her.
Wow didn't watch the grammys but I love seeing Tracy she is still amazing 💖
This was such an incredible moment!
Her delicate vibrato + superb story telling is why i adore her. She's got a gift, for sure.❤
I was at that concert too! Huge Springsteen fan but Tracy Chapman was the highlight of that show for me. I will never forget
Voices meld like butter! Brilliant! ❤
This was the spiritual experience America needed….
hearing Tracy perform this - - I saw her live at the Amnesty International Concert in Philly right after Fast Cars was released - one of my favorite concert experience ever
0:33 SAME!!!! I love when that happens too. It’s always great to rediscover good music!
Her voice is still as rich, captivating and haunting as it was 30+ years ago. Great singers don't need a bunch of tricks to make great songs.
Really enjoyed this analysis. Her voice is so special, and Luke has a good voice too. I agree with you, I like the unison. This was my favorite performance of the night.
I remember David Letterman introduced her saying Tracy is his only favorite singer.
I think this resonates well to most becuase this rendition to me seems acknowledge the differences, the struggles in life and uniting together to walk on the same path to be someone.
YES
You’re so right about the unison, even without harmony you can hear their individual voices and they fit together so well. Magic!
So happy you covered this performance. It was so effortless and very moving. ❤
DEVINE PERFECTION!!! 🙏😇✨ I’m OBSESSED with this performance!!! Makes me emotional. I LOVE this woman!!! 👑 No ear piece??? Went immediately to download Tracy’s original and Luke’s cover. All I need is the duet!!! Thanks for this breakdown. I’m old and have been struggling with the lyrics. 😂🤣
P.S. You ROCK!!!
I was hoping you would react to their performance ❤ i absolutely love this song ✨ best performance of the night
I loved how they’d look at each other, she knew they were hitting it, and he’s just an awe of being up there her. ❤
Tracy looks and sound amazing.
Favorite concert ever been to was at a Luke Combs concert August ‘23 in Philadelphia. Right before he came on there was a rain delay that was like 2 hours long. When he came out I was a little kid again
I can not find the full performance anywhere on UA-cam. It’s crazy! But damn!!! Amazing!!
I can’t find it either
This was the closest I could find too
It’s on ig
The full performance is on instagram on Recording Academy or Luke Combs page.
It's on X (Twitter) that I got to rewatch it.
I think my favorite Tracy Chapman song is "Cold Feet." She's what my culture (Scots) would call a bard. Once in a lifetime storyteller.
Tracy's voice has a very fine timbre, so soothing to the ears.
I was glad Luke Combs did this cover. I always loved the original Tracy Champman song. It was the best. I hope they release this duet because this is now my favorite version. Their voices compliment each other. I didn't think it could get better than the original.
Tbh I was waiting for this video lol.
Love this song. Definitely has the essence of its era.
Great video as always! 👏
Omg!! This was definitely a treat for me💙.. I haven’t heard anything from Tracy Chapman in a minute.I love love her smooth operator and sultry sound. This was beautifully fully done💕🎤💕.Another one🔥🎤🔥🎤Thank You 💖🔥💖
Smooth Operator was Sade🤷♀️🤷♀️
@@sostew7518 First off.. I’m aware Sade made a song titled smooth operator “” I identified Tracy Chapman’s voice as a Medifore to her style and texture. Therefore keep your unnecessary antics to yourself.Especially if you haven’t a clue or understanding of why I wrote my comment.
I’m totally aware smooth operator the song is Sade”s..First off before adding your cliche so call correction . I referenced Smooth operator to Tracy Chapman”s Vocal style and texture. So stay in your lane .Thank You
Even Tracy’s guitar playing is relaxed.
I'm in tears! Tracy is stunning! Fast car, is me and my Dad's song 🎵,
I’ve been listening to Tracy since her debut album. Nothing like listening to Fast Car on a record. ❤
I was so against a cover of this song because of how perfect the original is, but Luke Combs’ so obviously reveres and respects Tracy that it feels right. His emotion during this performance is really something.
Part of me felt the same way, but Tracy Chapman is a songwriter. Even if a cover will never transcend the original, I'm sure she appreciates that her work will live on and survive later interpretations.
@@kathyvanburen3313 Oh absolutely! I definitely have a strong attachment to the original, so I was biased going in. But I really love what Luke Combs did with the song and I love the way it’s created a whole new audience for Tracy’s incredible work!!
Interestingly he has been covering this song for 6 years now in concert ... and then released as a single.
Fast Car must really mean alot to Luke for having covered it for many years. His dad playing it in the car must have been the reason for it....and it just stuck.
@@JayaJaya-pc9tb Absolutely. I know it means a lot to me, so it’s nice to see others show it the same level of care.
I love how Luke continues to look over at her😃😃 He felt honored to be singing the song with her you could tell
Can Chapman and Combs tour together in concert? Please. I'll even pay for a HBO Special. Lol
Hers is one of the few songs that have had a permanent spot on my playlists over the years. I remember when Madonna dissed this song: “I don’t work in a 7-11,” she said. 🤨
What a worthy and timeless song to make a resurgence decades later. What a lovely duet. I love the contrast in their voices, they are so different but pair so well together.
I had the same reaction as you sir! When Luke's version came on my Pandora I was saying I heard this before so I googled it and said, " I Knew it!" I am a huge fan of Ms.Chapman.
This was beautiful👏 Traci was just before her time... and I'm glad to see her get her flowers she deserves. And can I say black don't crack! She was always beautiful and still is
I had never heard Luke Combs before nor do I listen to country... Tracy's voice, as stunning as ever; his voice blew me away. I really hope they record this together.
Thanks for a great analysis and in terms a non-musician can understand.
It’s phenomenal how Country legend Tracy Chapman’s one of kind authentic beautiful voice and vocals are STILL flawless, pristine, and crispy after ALL these decades. As a GenX, this brought tears because Tracy was one of beloved songbirds that gave us all wonderful music memories back in the day. ❤
This was amazing! I loved this analysis. Great job, Jaron! Tracy and Luke were one of the best performances of the night, Tracy and Luke's voices fit together well, I also loved the chorus in unison.
