People who have made fun of low horsepower rated large displacement V8 gasoline engines have never driven one. The torque, the toughness, they are more motor than anyone thinks. Easy to underestimate.
I agree. I will take one of those over a tiny displacement four cylinder with twin turbos and a supercharger any day. Plus the sound makes a big difference. Now, let's talk about repairing one. Yes, I know, my Jeep takes 16 spark plugs, but the torque of the V-8 makes all the difference.
Right right, now go watch Whistlin Diesel's video on the Gwagon going up against dedicated 4wd rock & mud crawlers, and simply staying with them on those city tires. I don't think snow does much to stop it. The Gwagon is actually a very solid platform
The G-bus is very impressive. I'm glad we got to see the end result. the G is insanely capable especially with those tires, the low torque engine seems to suit it just fine. And you have big balls to take it in the middle of swampy terrain without a winch installed. Great video

That was so awesome to see and hear that engine running in that off-roader.. that V8 swap is awesome and I am so happy to see it being put to fun use! Very excellent job everyone!
I strongly believe it was the driver who made the Mercedes look so good. Sometimes people don't want to hear the truth about why someone can do something better. A lot of people used the excuse that you have x y and z on your truck and I don't. It really comes down to the driver. Back in the early 80s when I was drag racing after I did a lot of modifications and switched to strictly track tires I could not get my car to go any faster than it did before doing all that work. a good friend of mine asked me if I would let him take the car for the next round. He did and he took off a half a second. That's when I realized I have to learn to drive my car better. Since now we know there were no issues. I really enjoyed your video.
Love it, offroad driving is a skill like no other. People might think it's just survival but it's really a skill, you have to learn that too. Power on power off how not to get stuck and so on, fantastic
Man that g wagon looks great with them wheels and tire combo! It did amazingly well on the trails! And the Land Cruiser too! Considering it’s got street tires, That was a great video!👌😎👍
I would live to see that old engine get some modifications. Port and polish the heads, a more aggressive cam, a Holley Terminator or similar, some tuning. Maybe even some head work to raise compression.
@@fastinradfordable very true but with fuel injection you can maintain stoic throughout the day with any weather changes. When I was young and beautiful I drove a same engine attached to АПП-66. The advantage was that you can ask your 30 passengers to carry it to a next puddle if you get stock
Watching this whilst using my recent acquisition of a Soviet C4313 multimeter from the 70's whilst circuit testing on a Raketa Amfibian quartz diver watch, most people over here in the UK think I am nutz loving all this old Soviet stuff lol The 4313 was a NOS never used, virgin with everything in waxed packets including the little tester glass bead resistors, all I had to do was solder in a 3xAA cell holder, give it a thorough clean as was immensely dusty and the plastic foam had turned to mush inside, working like a champ now :D :D :D
It reminds me of my 75 V8 Rangerover, we would take it in some unbelievable places in complete luxury ✨️, the independent suspension had the front and rear differentials what looked like 90° to each other 😂, and the young sponsored professionals, in their rollcaged multicolor modern offroad vehicles, were laughing at us as to what they had been through from their end, but.... they had no idea about what we had already passed from our end of the track, x10 worse than they had, and we were drinking beer with the "Range Rover" made stereo blasting 😅
6:44 no need for translation there 😂 Most ppl who build off-road or 4x4 vehicles put a winch on the bumper. Might be a good idea for the wagon incase you really get stuck. By the way I don’t think you could’ve picked a heavier 4x4 😆

My 5.8 V8 only makes like 165HP but when you give it full throttle you get shoved back into your seat.
Yeah I know what your torqueing about 😉 my 1.6 petrol has that low end thrust you describe
Torque in a gasoline engine AHAHAHAHAJAJA
The Ford 460 was the same way. Big V8 that only makes about 300 horsepower. However, absolute tree stump pulling torque all day long
That's how G class was supposed to drive
You took it to it's natural habitat
Looking at original tires that are fitted by manufacturer it was supposed to drive in city with 5 cm of snow at best.

I'd say leave the compression low like that and gap the rings to supercharge it. That will for sure wake it up
I’d say watch the video with the details about the engine build.
Fuel injection does not add any power.
