Great video. Wondering why we need the gold underneath all that green? Can that step be skipped because I’m the video it doesn’t seem to come through at all and then gold added on top. Seems like a waste of a layer from my end. Also did you say you added the raised appliqué? What glue did you use? What kind of appliqué?
Hi there, as I've answered this same question once or twice before, it's easier if I paste the answer... The copper coat after the black coat is there as a backup really. Interesting thank you for your video. I would like to ask why is there a need to put a thick coat of black paint a thick coat of copper paint when it could be just done with the thick coat of verdigris at once and then the white wash and the rest of it. I dont like wasting paint perhaps thats why I make a comment. Sometimes I like watching other artist using this technic but experiences has shown some waste a lot of paint
Thanks you for your comments. The first coat is there as a base coat, in the same way that you'd prime a piece of wood before painting it. Black gesso of a bonding primer would work even better. So the black coat is really there so that you get a nice even coverage of all paints that go on top and so that the paints that go on top have something to key too. I hope that helps explain in more detail for you 😀
The purpose of the first gold layer, is that it shows through in places. The coats of green that go on top, aren't perfectly painted. So the gold ensures that, rather than any black showing through, it will be gold. The green layers are partially transparent too, because they are very thin layers of paint. I hope this helps answer your question. 😀
Hi Val, there should be no reason why not. Be sure to prime the concrete surface first and then once you've done the technique, ensure you weather proof over the top with a clear varnish or similar. Hope that helps 😀
@@valkelly5006 it depends where you are in the world as to what products you can get hold of. Google primers and water based varnishes for external use. If you still can't find anything let me know and I'll try and help 😀
Thank you for your comment. Because I used acrylic paints, it does not really make the finished item waterproof. If you want to waterproof it, simply apply a clear matt waterproof varnish over the paint finish. Hope this helps answer your question 😀
Hi again! I started a project tonight but forgot to put gesso down first. It is not glass that I’m working on so will it be ok just start with the black or should I start over? Thank you again. Jann
Hi! I only applied gesso because I was painting onto glass. I'd also do the same for MDF or wood too. Other than that, you should be fine. As long as you painted on the metallic first coat, then everything should be good. Hope your project turns out amazing 😀
@carolsherman9817 Hi, the copper coat after the original black coat of paint is there as a backup really. It shows up better in real life than it does on the video. Where there are gaps in the first coat of the verdigris green colour and the colours thereafter, the copper does show through. But you can miss the first coat of copper out if you wish, but it all adds to the finished effect. It all depends if you want to risk any of the original black paint showing through on your end result(because all the colours are watered-down, the paints are quite transparent) I hope this helps answer your question. Thanks for your question. 😀
Thank you for commenting. I would like to point out that to achieve the layering of colours isn't a short process. Indeed, you could stop halfway through this process. However you wouldn't get the same effect. Give it a try and see what you come up with 😀
I translated your question. "What's wrong with what is he doing?" Is there something within the video that you need explaining more. Or are you stating that you like what is being done? There may have been something lost in translation. So please accept my apologies if that's the case.
Hi Wanda, the first coat of gold is there as a backup really. It shows better in reality than it does in the video. Where there are gaps in the first coat of the verdigris green colour and the colours thereafter, the gold does show through. But you can miss the first coat of gold out. It all depends if you want to risk any of the original black showing through on the end result.
Thank you for your support. You can buy special paints to produce this type of effect. I simply wanted to show people that the same finished effect could still be achieved, but using cheaper and easier to obtain paints. Thank you again for your comments, they're much appreciated 😀
Seems a very long process to end up with a 'green' jar! You overdid it, and lost the desired effect. Back in the '90s, I was a hand decorator for a large lighting company, and I must have turned hundreds of black candlestick holders into very old-looking brass candlestick holders, using the verdigris effect. I would stipple on the gold, over most of it, but certainly not all over it, then, here and there, stipple on the green & blue. And the result was like looking at a 300+-year-old candlestick holder, and not a green one.
Thanks for your comments. There are many ways to produce the verdigris effect. This one isn't a long process at all. It's all about layering the paints and letting them dry before moving on to the next layer. I think if you take a closer look at the thumbnail for the video, you'll see that the jar is far from being totally green. There is a lot of aging using white paint and gold dry brushing. Verdigris comes in many colourations, so there is no wrong or right. It's not an exact process and I'd be more than happy to share a link of your video of your process on my channel.

Hi Val, there should be no reason why not. Be sure to prime the concrete surface first and then once you've done the technique, ensure you weather proof over the top with a clear varnish or similar. Hope that helps 😀
@@MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts Thanks so much!!! What would you recommend priming with??
@@valkelly5006 it depends where you are in the world as to what products you can get hold of. Google primers and water based varnishes for external use. If you still can't find anything let me know and I'll try and help 😀

Hope you manage to use this technique in whatever you create 😀
This is waterproof??
Thank you for your comment. Because I used acrylic paints, it does not really make the finished item waterproof. If you want to waterproof it, simply apply a clear matt waterproof varnish over the paint finish. Hope this helps answer your question 😀
I meant to say the Layering effects not Larry
Thank you again for taking the time to comment on my video. 😀
@@MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts I did black first though. Should I start over?
@@jannoliver1434 Yes start with black, then the metallic paints wash followed by the colour you want to use.
@@MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts thanks very much! I thought so but wanted to be 100% sure! Much appreciated.
@@jannoliver1434 no worries, always happy to help.
Why put on copper if you keep covering it up?
@carolsherman9817 Hi, the copper coat after the original black coat of paint is there as a backup really. It shows up better in real life than it does on the video. Where there are gaps in the first coat of the verdigris green colour and the colours thereafter, the copper does show through. But you can miss the first coat of copper out if you wish, but it all adds to the finished effect. It all depends if you want to risk any of the original black paint showing through on your end result(because all the colours are watered-down, the paints are quite transparent) I hope this helps answer your question. Thanks for your question. 😀
To me lost what you was after.you could half that time
Thank you for commenting. I would like to point out that to achieve the layering of colours isn't a short process. Indeed, you could stop halfway through this process. However you wouldn't get the same effect. Give it a try and see what you come up with 😀
A little bit like a female Bob Ross 😍
Thank you for the comment, but last time I checked I was definitely all male😀
@@MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts gosh, sorry! 😅😅😅
@@Purpurschnecke no worries. Made me laugh too 😂😂😂
Зачем второй слой золото если его закрасили?
I translated your question. "What's wrong with what is he doing?" Is there something within the video that you need explaining more. Or are you stating that you like what is being done? There may have been something lost in translation. So please accept my apologies if that's the case.
I don't see the need for the second coat of gold, as none of it is evident. I understand the black base coat but not the gold. Good vid
Also, I do not agree with that one comment that you could get this affect another way. It Hass to be done like this I know because I have tried.
It may seems a long time to you, for me it’s the enjoyment of the creation no matter the time it takes 🤷🏻♀️💕
