    • @MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts

      Yes you can, in fact I use a digital camcorder. For that I use te HDMI out socket on the camera and plug it into a capture card or capture USB stick. Then you can add the camera in the same way as described in the video. You'll just need to search for the capture card name or capture USB sticks name in the list. The USB capture stick I use is this one... it works a treat! You'll also need a second device to covert from analogue to an HDMI output. Have you tested the weight of this clay as it dried? I think it's lighter than regular DAS clay but Creative Paper Clay may have it beat?

    • @MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts
      @MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts 2 місяці тому

      @balsalmalberto8086 although I didn't weigh the clay before and after drying, you're correct in saying it's lighter than the normal Das Clays. Again I'd say you're right with regards to Creative Paper Clay. I use a clay similar, called Hearty clay. Like the one your one, it's also made from paper pulp... so not much will beat the weight of it. It's almost feather light... but again the Playdoh Air clay is extremely light too, as that clay is a foam clay. 😀

  • @balsalmalberto8086
    @balsalmalberto8086 2 місяці тому

    You're the first channel to show the real strengths and best applications of wood clay. Red rocking bird also did a great job going over the details. It's not great for sculpting but it great for Molds! It''s seems perfect for my application. Jazza's video was like a hit piece on wood clay, He used a different brand though. Did he ever come back to it? I suck at wood carving but I want to make some freaking marionette or something with this stuff. sculpt with an easier medium and then make a mold with this wood clay.

    • @MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts
      @MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts 2 місяці тому

      @balsalmalberto8086 thank you for your comments. I always like to try and make things work and if all else fails, show people other ways that work really well. I've been in the crafting industry for over 20 years, so passing on my knowledge is something I'm passionate about. You could still make a marionette using this clay. Start with a wire skeleton with tin foil padding, giving the overall shape of the body etc. Then use the wood clay to coat it. If you've never used this clay before, then certainly give it a try. You just need to be patient before you see any results. If you still want to try using another clay to do your detailed sculpting, then I'd certainly recommend the Playdoh Air clay. The link to that video is here...ua-cam.com/video/jgS9wIXSvEE/v-deo.html Thanks again for commenting on my video. 😀

    I wonder if , before painting, you could protect the surface with some matte medium or matte modpodge, to keep the clay from dissolving when adding a watery paint.

    • @MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts
      @MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts 2 місяці тому

      @iknownothing-49 Thank you for taking the time to comment. You only paint the wood clay once it is fully dry (up to a week to dry, depending on the thickness of the clay). So you wouldn't need to apply something like Modpodge until after you've painted the wood clay. The clay can withstand a watery paint, as long as it's not for prolonged periods of time. I hope this helps with your query 😀

    • @MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts
      @MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts 3 місяці тому

      @Snuske68 the bristles on the brush being shorter are pretty stiff. They don't really bend. You can get special dry brushing brushes that are cut flat at the ends. These can be quite expensive, but I can't seem to get on with them that well. Give a go at cutting down one of your old brushes. I cut mine so that the bristles were about 8-12mm in length. Let me know how you get on. My biggest tip is to clean the brush regularly. Because it only has a small amount of paint on when in use. The paint will dry quicker on the brush. Hope that makes sense. 😀

    • @MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts
      @MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts 3 місяці тому

      @Snuske68 cornstarch (corn flour in the UK) works fine. Bit on moulds like the ones I used in the videos, cornstarch isn't enough, as the cast bend and twist when releasing from the moulds. The freezer technique really does give you a perfect replication of your mould as a cast. If you're going to try the freezer technique, you won't need to put cornstarch in your moulds beforehand. @MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts 3 місяці тому

      @nancyrobjohns8163 Hi there, as I've answered this same question once or twice before, it's easier if I paste the answer... The copper/gold coat after the black coat is there as a backup really. It shows up better in real life than it does on the video. Where there are gaps in the first coat of the verdigris green colour and the colours thereafter, the copper does show through. But you can miss the first coat of copper out if you wish. It all depends if you want to risk any of the original black coat showing through on your end result. I hope this helps answer your question. There is the full length version of this video (not sped up), with narration. This may explain the whole process of the painting a bit better for you. ua-cam.com/video/ljdlI7OS-EQ/v-deo.html

    I've been using the hobbycraft air dry clay, but seems to be very wet taking it out from packaging. I wanted to cast some small rose shapes but forgot the corn startch and it turned into a mess. • @MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts
      @MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts 5 місяців тому

      @daveymichael6891 You can use Hobbycrafts own brand of clay in the way I've used Das clay in this video. No air dry clay is going to dry that quickly, most take over night to do so. If you want a clay that will release from a mould, the Hearty Soft clay works well, as do certain types of foam clay. I think as a guide, watch another of my videos where I talk about air drying clay. ua-cam.com/video/8zvHr33rlZU/v-deo.html Once you've had a look at the video, please feel free to come back to me if you have any questions.

    • @MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts
      @MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts 6 місяців тому

      @carolsherman9817 Hi, the copper coat after the original black coat of paint is there as a backup really. It shows up better in real life than it does on the video. Where there are gaps in the first coat of the verdigris green colour and the colours thereafter, the copper does show through. But you can miss the first coat of copper out if you wish, but it all adds to the finished effect. It all depends if you want to risk any of the original black paint showing through on your end result(because all the colours are watered-down, the paints are quite transparent) I hope this helps answer your question. I have 2 questions that are completely unrelated to your video. You seem to know a lot about air drying clay and I saw a video you did 2 years ago in which you reviewed the Hearty Clay, which is the brand I use. I am working on a project and I am stuck until I can find the answer to my questions. I'm working on a project, using a set of cutters from Patchwork Cutters. Their cutters are very thin, but I have made my clay figures thicker, about 1/4 inch thick. The cutters are from a pirate set, so I have a ship, a treasure chest, 2 different pirates, some trees, and I might make a bush. I want to make a plaque that could either have magnets put on the back of it or be hung on a wall. I was in a local craft store here in the USA and came across some wood frames covered with white canvas being sold for use with watercolor or acrylic paints. One of the canvases is the perfect size for my project. I would like to roll out some air dry clay in blue (for the sky and water) and in yellow/brown (for the beach/sand). I would cover the entire face of the canvas with that rolled out clay and then glue all the figures onto that clay. (The clay would not go past the edges and down the sides...it would just cover the "painting" surface area. The canvas, as I mentioned, is a white color, and I think it has been treated with a titanium something and whatever they put on canvas to prepare it for paints. My questions are: 1. Are you able to tell me if the Hearty Clay would stick to this particular type of canvas if I glued it on? And if so, 2. What glue should I use? There are so many kinds in the stores that it is very confusing. I don't want to use anything that would create a lump or line under the clay, obviously (and the clay will be rolled out pretty thinly), but I would need something that would hold the clay onto the "treated" canvas. Might you know the answer to my 2 questions, please? Thank you in advance!

    • @MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts
      @MixedMediaArtsAndCrafts 6 місяців тому

      A canvas is normally treated with a type of primer called gesso (normally white in colour) So yes the clay would stick to that. What you'll have to remember is that once you've rolled out your clay, it will shrink by about 10%. So roll out a larger area of clay than the size of your canvas. Then once dry, stick it to the canvas with a good wood glue. Gorilla Wood Glue is great,. If you can buy that where you are. Stick the clay and weigh the clay down so that it has good contact with the canvas. Leave to dry before trimming off the excess clay. Job done! I hope this helps answer both your questions. If you have any more, then I'll be happy to help further. Good luck with your project 😀
