    ABOUT ME
    I’m 30 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
    At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
    I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 600 breeding ewes.
    I shore over 15,000 sheep this season in UK and I also travel to Norway for shearing in March and September. (Covid messed it up this year)
    A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
    I watched a few farm vlogs on UA-cam and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
    Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

    "WHY DO YOU NOT RADDLE / HARNESS YOUR TUPS?"
    I see i've already been asked that a few times so i'm going to pin this answer here.
    Couple reasons i suppose,
    1 - Putting on harnesses is another job. Another expense and they can still fall off or cause the rams some issues. Raddle is the alternative but u have to reapply that regular and with my work load that's not possible so i'd only have the first few marked.
    2 - I raddle the texel tups after first turn and anything tupped after that i'll leave to lamb outside. With them being teasered there shouldn't be very many
    3 - I don't do anything with the cheviots as they'll all just run on and lamb when they lamb and there is only 90 odd so they stay as one batch regardless.
    4 - The sheep that are left with no marks at end of tupping are the equivalent of whatever colour u would have put on first but you've saved money not buying crayons / raddle for the first turn.
    5 - I hate my sheep being covered in paint =D. Just a weird thing that annoys me haha
    All just my views on it!! Happy to hear your thoughts! Cheers Sheep Fans!

      What does the Teaser do in the flock?

    • @christineroerty2534
      @christineroerty2534 2 роки тому

      I had to look this up myself. Since I grew up in the city, these farming videos are a enjoyable learning experience.
      “The teaser should go in with the ewes on day zero for 14 days to get the ewes cycling before the stock ram replaces the teaser on day 14 at a ratio of one per 20-30 ewes. Ms Nabb says: “The ram effect works by the teaser releasing a pheromone, which sets the ewes into a period of estrous”

    I got hooked on Scotland from watching The Hoof GP and I love your drone footage of the sheep in the fields, with the frost on the ground you could see their paths. Your dogs are so well behaved and I love hearing you give them commands, they are a lot smarter than me, I can’t understand what you’re saying! Watching them in action is so enjoyable. Thanks for another great video Cammy!💕from🇨🇦

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  2 роки тому +2

      Teasers are male sheep who have had a vasectomy, they still act like a ram around the females but would be firing blanks, we put the teasers with the females for around 2 weeks before we put the rams in as this gets the ewes cycling together and then when the rams go in they are ready to be mated and can help keep lambing from going on to long. n my case my teasers are the black ones but that is just so I can remember which ones they are.

      Hi Craig, I see i've already been asked that a few times so i'm going to copy and paste this answer =D. Couple reasons i suppose,
      1 - Putting on harnesses is another job. Another expense and they can still fall off or cause the rams some issues. Raddle is the alternative but u have to reapply that regular and with my work load that's not possible so i'd only see the first few marked.
      2 - I raddle the texel tups after first turn and anything tupped after that i'll leave to lamb outside. With them being teasered there shouldn't be many
      3 - I don't do anything with the cheviots as they'll all just run on and lamb when they lamb and there is only 90 odd so they stay as one batch regardless.
      4 - The sheep that are left with no marks at end of tupping are the equivalent of whatever colour u would have put on first but you've saved money not buying crayons / raddle for the first turn.
      5 - I hate my sheep being covered in paint =D. Just a weird thing that annoys me.
      All just my views on it!! Happy to hear your thoughts!

      It's not a bad plan but i personally wouldn't. I don't have my own farm so no handy sheds for wintering tup lambs and feeding them. Then there is the hassle of selling them. Hey " life on a farm" I've been doing exactly what you describe for a few years now and think it's a great system for small flocks up to about 300 ewes.
      I spend a bit of time looking for really nice ram lambs, then give them about 10 ewes each at tupping. They are then proven hoggets the following year that have near pedegree markings / characteristics and sell for a good price.
      I keep a few for myself, and these guys are used to the farm, are also proven and of course top quality.
      Note: I always sell the lambs off them from their ram lamb apprenticeship breeding season.
